Even though every political and statistical indication points to an Obama victory tonight -- and a healthy one at that -- a certain brand of liberal paranoia persists. This is too good to be true, Democrats declare, fingers grasping at their hair. McCain is tightening the race in key states. The youth vote won't come out.

And so it goes.

But if in fact McCain were to win this election it would be, one of the nation's foremost pollster says, almost historically unprecedented.

RELATED: Dem Pollster: "I've Never Been Less Worried"

"There is no reason in history to suggest [Obama won't win]," said Frank Newport of Gallup. "All you can go by is history and compare our last polling that we have done before the election and the actual outcome in the presidential election... We have most polls showing Obama with a statistically significant lead nationally and also in these states. If he were to lose, it will be the first time since World War II something like this has happened. Now, keep in mind. It's a small sample, less than 20 elections, but it would be very unusual, in fact, exceptional... improbable."

Indeed, the last time that Gallup's final poll before the election did not accurately determine the winning candidate was 1948, when they stopped polling a week before Harry Truman's comeback victory against Thomas Dewey. Even in 1980, when Ronald Reagan staged a late comeback that turned into an electoral rout, Gallup caught glimmers of this trend just in time, showing the Gipper up three points in its last poll.

When it comes to the current election, the firm has Obama up eleven points in its final survey. But what should make Democrats more assured, said Newport, is that the Illinois Democrat has maintained a steady margin throughout the past month.

"Since September 15, Obama has been ahead in every poll we have conducted or any other polling I have seen and often by substantial margins," he said. "It is not like it is race in which McCain was leading and we are seeing some kind of shift for Obama, it has been Obama ahead pretty dominantly."

Moreover, other polling firms are documenting similar trends -- a confluence of data that validates the larger picture.

"We are all using a measuring instrument to estimate a big population," said Newport. "It is like we have a giant lake and we are trying to estimate the bacteria percentage. So we take a sample and test it and that is what we are doing. But yes... if you have 15 scientists and they are all showing the same thing, that does give you more assurance that the lake has some bacteria."

There are, of course, Obama supporters who will remain unconvinced. And as evidence they could cite the polls leading up to the New Hampshire primary, which showed the Illinois Democrat in a similarly comfortable lead only to lose to Hillary Clinton by two points. Newport acknowledged that the primary fight in the Granite State gives him and others in the business pause -- he has yet to find a smoking gun to explain what happened, though he hinted that massive late-stage change in voter preference moved too quickly for polls to pick up.

But that was, for better or worse, an aberration. Pressed to quantify just how big a failure for the polling industry a McCain victory would represent, he didn't feel comfortable even following the hypothetical.

"Call me tomorrow," he replied. "Obviously when Gallup and other scientific polling organizations do our best... and if for some reason the actual voting out there didn't mirror, internally, what we were showing, it certainly would be a time where we would have to say, 'What are we doing wrong?'... But we will cross that bridge if we get there. Right now, we aren't crossing that bridge... It is improbable. But like I said, call me tomorrow."

I received this message from a close friend this morning. To say I was stunned is putting it too lightly. This is why we don't trust the polls.

To my dear friends,
I must say this, or my heart will break. I have wrestled all week with this because it is not an easy thing to say. Some of you know me well, some not so well. I am thrilled that America has finally reached the place where a black man can run for the highest position in the land. It is something I have prayed for. I have never judged a person's worth or character based on their culture or color. My church, friends, and business are all multicolored and diverse. That is the only way I would have it.

By the way, I neither a Democrat or a Republican. I am a Conservative who believes in God, religious freedom, small government, parental rights and strength, low taxes, representation in government, etc. My family were always Democrats. But the Democratic party as they knew it no longer exists and has been replaced with radical leftists (those in power anyway). People like Joe Lieberman, a true Democrat and a good man, was not so gently pushed out of his own party.

This is ridiculous. I am not sure what Democratic party you think you knew but the party has been forced right by the GOP over the last 20 years. So much so that you think the right not to be "wiretapped" or not to be arrested without due cause is a "leftist" idea. To think that it is fair and just to make sure people don't starve in this rich country of ours, is a "leftist" idea.

No one in my party is NOT a fiscal conservative. No one in my party wants to take taxes from you needlessly. But you Republicans can't continue to spend our surplusses recklessly and then freak out when we need to raise taxes to pay off the debt YOU caused.

Use your common sense. Joe Lieberman agrees with everything else in the Dem platform but the war. He was pushed out because he LIED about fellow Dems for his own political gain.

Please! Spare us your nonsense! A good many of the people commenting on Huffpo have done extensive research and if we had found any evidence of that stuff, we would not be voting for Obama. I think you are just a republican "prankster!

However good this news is, it's no reason to get comfortable. My Mom just received an all-hands-on-deck panic call from the Obama campaign here in Minnesota. They told her that the race here is looking a lot tighter than they expected, and they asked her to please go out and knock on doors and drive people to the polls.

Again.

At my polling place, which is in a white suburb, there were two African American adults, one man, one woman, dressed in yellow T-shirts, with the Obama logo on them, and the words "Voting Information', They were there to assist any voters who had questions. They were seated in lawn chairs, in the appropriate place on this property, they were not violating any electioneering ordinances, they did not approach anyone unless someone came to them first, and then they were there to offer their help in a very courteous and professional way. Obviously they were there to represent Obama (and win last minute votes). McCain had no such representation.

To me, this demonstrates why Obama will win this election. Class. From top level to grassroots, Obama has conducted a fair, honest, sincere, smart, and distinguished campaign. It's no secret on this forum that on most topics, I have been sympathetic to the McCain/Palin cause, but when Obama wins, and is inaugurated on January 20, 2009, I will, as ALL Americans should, give Obama the chance to govern that he HAS EARNED, and get behind our new president and support him even while we may disagree with him, and, support those policies of his that will move this nation forward in a responsible manner.

If you have voted for Obama, do not let paranoia steal what should be a joyful day for you. Obama has earned this victory the old-fashioned way, he's earned it... celebrate that.

Seriously. Where I live surrounded by hysterical, weeping Republicans I found my polling place manned by a couple of retired college professors and a pastor wearing OBAMA buttons. There to greet the Republicans? A woman who appeared to have been recruited from our homeless shelter where I volunteer regularly. Paid by the local Republican house candidate, I think.

I won't rest easy until I hear Barack take the oath of office. The best part of that will be hearing John Roberts have to say "Congratulations Mr. President." Until I know that's going to happen, I will be a wreck.

Interesting article I read today by PAT BUCHANAN of all people

http://townhall.com/columnists/PatrickJBuchanan/2008/11/04/but_where_did_bush_go_wrong?page=full&comments=true

In it he says the Republicans, and the Neocons specifically, are completely to blame for the electoral defeat. No conspiracy theories about how Obama has somehow stolen or brainwashed the country. He lays out how the Bush docrtine and neocon ideology, were completely wrong, and that what was even worse is that all the Republicans just went along with him and supported him when they should have been condemning him, even in the face of such devastating failures as Iraq and Katrina. Especially interesting are his closing paragraphs:

"The GOP needs to confront the truth: The failure of the Bush presidency lies not in a failed execution of policy but in the policies themselves and the neoconservative ideology that informed them.

Yet, still, the party remains in denial, refusing to come to terms with the causes of its misfortune. One expects they will be given the time and opportunity for reflection soon.

"The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in our stars but in ourselves." "

GO VOTE NOW! Make History! Obama is need of all the votes necessary to create a landslide. Let's make sure that our state turns blue! Bring your friends and family - make it a group thing! Wouldn't you want to say 1 year from now, 5 years from now, or even 20 years from now that you contributed to the most highlighted election in US history? Wouldn't you be proud to tell your kids/grandkids years from now that you voted for this election? It will be the most talked about election for centuries. Voting is a right and a privilege. Let's all make history together!

Sam,
Your article ignores three important factors the R's are counting on to win; voter suppression, electronic paperless voting, and corrupt polling officials. All of these have played significant roles in our loses of the past two presidential elections, and there is no reason to think they won't be used again.

The only way we are going to win today is to overcome these three factors. We must win overwhelmingly, we must demand that the machines work properly (and that they are discarded in future elections), and we must litigate ruthlessly to restore this country's ability to hold a fair vote.

Nothing to worry ...unless there is a replay similar to the questionable Diebold machine or other dirty tactics. Why export democracy when we can even establish one here?

I will wait patiently but nervously until one of the major news organizations calls the election for Obama.

Until then it is unofficial and not a sure thing.

But I am hopeful that we can uncork the champagne early tonight?

An Obama victory is still incomprehensible and my mind refuses to think about celebrating yet, a win would be political ecstasy of the highest magnitude, the dawning of a new America and the end of my mourning for the nation that was stolen from us but now returned, damaged but safe, and ready to build anew.

Obama/Biden
