Even though every political and statistical indication points to an Obama victory tonight -- and a healthy one at that -- a certain brand of liberal paranoia persists. This is too good to be true, Democrats declare, fingers grasping at their hair. McCain is tightening the race in key states. The youth vote won't come out.

And so it goes.

But if in fact McCain were to win this election it would be, one of the nation's foremost pollster says, almost historically unprecedented.

RELATED: Dem Pollster: "I've Never Been Less Worried"

"There is no reason in history to suggest [Obama won't win]," said Frank Newport of Gallup. "All you can go by is history and compare our last polling that we have done before the election and the actual outcome in the presidential election... We have most polls showing Obama with a statistically significant lead nationally and also in these states. If he were to lose, it will be the first time since World War II something like this has happened. Now, keep in mind. It's a small sample, less than 20 elections, but it would be very unusual, in fact, exceptional... improbable."

Indeed, the last time that Gallup's final poll before the election did not accurately determine the winning candidate was 1948, when they stopped polling a week before Harry Truman's comeback victory against Thomas Dewey. Even in 1980, when Ronald Reagan staged a late comeback that turned into an electoral rout, Gallup caught glimmers of this trend just in time, showing the Gipper up three points in its last poll.

When it comes to the current election, the firm has Obama up eleven points in its final survey. But what should make Democrats more assured, said Newport, is that the Illinois Democrat has maintained a steady margin throughout the past month.

"Since September 15, Obama has been ahead in every poll we have conducted or any other polling I have seen and often by substantial margins," he said. "It is not like it is race in which McCain was leading and we are seeing some kind of shift for Obama, it has been Obama ahead pretty dominantly."

Moreover, other polling firms are documenting similar trends -- a confluence of data that validates the larger picture.

"We are all using a measuring instrument to estimate a big population," said Newport. "It is like we have a giant lake and we are trying to estimate the bacteria percentage. So we take a sample and test it and that is what we are doing. But yes... if you have 15 scientists and they are all showing the same thing, that does give you more assurance that the lake has some bacteria."

There are, of course, Obama supporters who will remain unconvinced. And as evidence they could cite the polls leading up to the New Hampshire primary, which showed the Illinois Democrat in a similarly comfortable lead only to lose to Hillary Clinton by two points. Newport acknowledged that the primary fight in the Granite State gives him and others in the business pause -- he has yet to find a smoking gun to explain what happened, though he hinted that massive late-stage change in voter preference moved too quickly for polls to pick up.

But that was, for better or worse, an aberration. Pressed to quantify just how big a failure for the polling industry a McCain victory would represent, he didn't feel comfortable even following the hypothetical.

"Call me tomorrow," he replied. "Obviously when Gallup and other scientific polling organizations do our best... and if for some reason the actual voting out there didn't mirror, internally, what we were showing, it certainly would be a time where we would have to say, 'What are we doing wrong?'... But we will cross that bridge if we get there. Right now, we aren't crossing that bridge... It is improbable. But like I said, call me tomorrow."

I'm optimistic...yet I've been that before.

I've had that 45 since it first came out and I absolutely adore it! Heartbreaking, to say the least. BTW, the flip side is a cool version of "Sunny."

McCain sounds very hoarse and looks very tired. I don't know how he's done it. I'm 10 years younger and I don't think I could handle the ordeal of this marathon campaign. I hope he doesn't break down physically -- sincerely, I do.

I was concerned about his health when I read the headline, "McCain breaks with tradition and campaigns on election day."

Not only has he had 4 (3?) bouts with melanoma, his father and paternal grandfather died of sudden heart failure -- his grandfather was only 61.

I thought he sounded more grovelly, or cratechity. Not his words, (any more that usual) but his voice.

Further reason for HOPE:

The Washington Redskins lost at home last night...

As a Baltimore Ravens fan, I normally would have wanted the Washington Redskins to beat the Pittsburg Steelers last night (it would have made us tied with Pittsburgh in our division)...
EXCEPT that in the past, when the Redskins have won their last Home game before a national election, the incumbent party won, and when they lost, the incumbent party lost...

It was a little scary early in the game, with Washington scoring two field goals twice in the first 4 minutes and Pittsburgh/Rothesburger looking pretty lame, BUT thank god the Fates woke up and turned things around!... It ended up 23 - 6.

But Pittsburgh, that's the LAST time I'm rooting for you!

Pittsburgh is in what could be the key state.

Yep. In 2012 you can root for the Redskins :)

I caught that too, and I fell asleep with the SKINS up 6-0 , but I awoke afresh and the 1st thing i checked was that score, and knew it would be a beautiful day! not that I'm into jinxes or anything LOL!

I also would not normally root for Steelers as i like the Browns, but Heh, you gotta do waht ya gotta do!

I'm not nervous. Most of the people that I have befriend while in school were apolitical- They are ALL registered and they have either voted today or early voting (here in Ga). These people are not accounted for in polling as either likely or registered voters b/c they are so new.
If Obama gets 375 or 270 he still gets ALL THE PRESIDENCY!!

I feel good, but I think most Obama supporters want a Landslide- I just want 270!!

375 gives us a mandate.

It's not the polling that has us worried. We also believed Gore and Kerry would win. The problem is the cheating. Will Obama's margins be big enough to overcome the millions of lost and stolen votes???

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:42 PM on 11/04/2008

If you thought Gore and Kerry would win, you were cherry picking polls.

The vast majority of polls had Bush up for weeks both times. Gore and Kerry were long shots, they closed somewhat at the end, but they were the underdogs by far going into election day.

The polling this year is completely different, it truly does favor the democrat and by the biggest margin in quite a while.

My cherry picked polls were right about Gore and Kerry. They did win, but not by enough to overcome stolen votes and the SC.

Take a look at this electoral vote map: http://electoral-vote.com ...

... and then this one: http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2004/Pres/Maps/Nov04.html

Quite a contrast. And even in 2004 Bush didn't exactly blow Kerry out of the water.

Gore DID win.

To grab this one the Repubs would have to steal half a dozen states, not just one. Extremely improbable.

The margins in Missouri, Florida, North Carolina and Indiana are going to be razor thin.

Your single vote absolutely counts in these states.

If you have a copy of this play it loud all night long:

Oh the foes will rise
With the sleep still in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreaming.
But they'll pinch themselves and squeal
And they'll know that it's for real
The hour when the ship comes in.

Then they'll rise their hands
Saying we'll meet all your demands
But we'll shout from the bow "Your days are numbered!"
And like Pharaoh's tribe
They'll be drownded in the tide
And like Goliath they'll be conquered!

Bob Dylan

Performed at the Lincoln Memorial during the March On Washington

At my polling place, which is in a white suburb, there were two African American adults, one man, one woman, dressed in yellow T-shirts, with the Obama logo on them, and the words "Voting Information', They were there to assist any voters who had questions. They were seated in lawn chairs, in the appropriate place on this property, they were not violating any electioneering ordinances, they did not approach anyone unless someone came to them first, and then they were there to offer their help in a very courteous and professional way. Obviously they were there to represent Obama (and win last minute votes). McCain had no such representation.

To me, this demonstrates why Obama will win this election. Class. From top level to grass roots, Obama has conducted a fair, honest, sincere, smart, and distinguished campaign. It's no secret on this forum that on most topics, I have been sympathetic to the McCain/Palin cause, but when Obama wins, and is inaugurated on January 20, 2009, I will, as ALL Americans should, give Obama the chance to govern that he HAS EARNED, and get behind our new president and support him even while we may disagree with him, and, support those policies of his that will move this nation forward in a responsible manner.

If you have voted for Obama, do not let paranoia steal what should be a joyful day for you. Obama has earned this victory the old-fashioned way, he's earned it... celebrate that.

There will be no Bradley effect, There was no Bradley effect when Tom Bradley ran for Govnr, They simply stopped taking polls almost a week before that election and even then Bradley was only up about 3-6 percent... a statistical tie...

I wish these "Liberal Media" types who pretend to be so informed would do some real research before they just repeat that babble over and over again. They act as if they are giving an excuse for the Republicans to steal this election.

If anything there will be a "Reverse Bradley Effect" where people in those battle grounds states who have and will vote for Obama, will not feel comfortable telling polsters and thus will under represent his true support. I have experienced this while doing calls to some of the states as an Obama campaign volunteer.

Yet another reason I'm looking forward to a big Obama win, it will put a final nail in the coffin of the alleged "bradley effect". So tired of hearing about it when there's no evidence for it at all.

I agree that Obama will likely outperform the polls in some states, particularly southern ones.
