Steve Schmidt

Steve Schmidt, McCain's top strategist, talks about the final day of the campaign:

He's [McCain's] been working very hard over the last 100 days of the campaign. Long day yesterday. Late night. Early start this morning. And he's going to cross the finish line head up, running all the way. We will see results here in a few hours. . . . It's the only way to finish anything that you do in life, that's a competitive venture, which is full speed. . . . We did our absolute best in this campaign in really difficult circumstances. We had some tough cards to play all the way through, and we hung in there all the way.

Ironically, if they had run a clean campaign they just might have pulled it off.

As a recovering Republican (I bailed after more than 20 years, right about the time Jerry Falwell was appointed Secretary of Virtue) I hope that some day I can consider voting for a GOP candidate again without cringing. It's going to take serious thought and introspection, something the party hasn't exhibited in quite a while. The first step is to put all the Karl Rove wannabes on an ice floe and send them out to sea.

Mr. Schidt,

Your "tough cards"? Smear, ignorance, bigotry, fear? Those are the only cards you played. Did you even hold cards such as honor, maturity, honesty, hope? If so, why discard them instead of playing them?

Schmidt is the bottom feeder of the campaign--he should not be proud of his dirty work in the campaign!!!

Steve Schmidt, I know that you spent all your campaign money on dirty tricks and fine wardrobes, so please allow me to be the first to offer to buy Sarah Palin a bus ticket back to Wasilla.

Thank you John McCain for giving a very gracious concession speech. I hope you get some more gigs on SNL!

Sarah is committed to cost cutting so let her run behind the bus.

Steve you took the low road at every chance; you pushed palin, you pushed the 'stopping the camp" to deal with the financial crisis - you played terrorist, race, religion, fear cards all from the bottom of the deck - I do see you joining FOX they could use lower than snake belly, accept no responsibility genius like yours.

This real American says: Be gone and take johnnie with you can you give palin a ride?

There is no way for McCain and Palin to finish with a drop of respect or honor. The way they have tried to divide our country to the very end is beyond belief. I am proud to call myself a person who supported Obama and this Democratic Party, and I am disappointed in anyone who supported the hatred of the Palin/McCain campaign. Words can not express how grateful I am to have my country and my God (who is only love) back.

Hey Steverino, given the slime-ball nature of the campaign you designed for John of No-Honor and the eagerness with which he embraced it, there's no way that a person with any moral sensibilities at all could say that McCain's crossing the finish line with his head up. My only conclusion is that the quote is incomplete and the part where you said WHAT his head was up didn't get recorded.

My guess is that they knew it couldn't be stolen as soon as early voting started; FL was blue and that's why Penn. became their only hope once their internal polling indicated that Ohio, Va, and NC were too close to call. Toss black turnout on top and you have an intractable situation.

The exit polling keeps talking about Obama doing well with college educated voters on both sides of the isle - that's the Palin effect, period. Republicans in that demographic were horrified with the Palin pick, and were recoiling at the Palin and McCain rallies. Never mind their lack of message ... The hate and ignorance of issues in those crowds was chilling, and that's the biggest problem for the repubs going forward: WTF to do with that faction of the party that is the bulk of their base, their rallies and their support. How do you distance yourself from those people gracefully? The neo-GOP is a party ruined by Rove. Period. The sooner they realize this fact the better off the country.

Old man John McCain will have plenty of time too reflect and internalize
just how mean he was during the last few weeks of the campaign.
He sure has allot to be ashamed of!
