TMZ, of all sites, has an interesting story up about a political saboteur telling Democrats in Deerfield Beach, Florida that they are supposed to vote at a different location.

Putting aside, for the moment the dirty tricks going on, there is another important nugget to glean from the story.

Nearly 400 people were firmly planted in line at 6:15 this morning, waiting for the polls to open at 7:00 AM. There is one voting machine to accommodate all of them.

This is a predominantly African-American community, with only one machine to punch in residents' votes.

Contrast that with an email we received from a voter near Columbus, Ohio, where, he says, historically very few people show up to vote. There were 14 voting machines on hand -- in this case, a needed amount for the influx of nearby college students showing up to the polls.

At 6:10 I was 31st in line. By the time the doors opened there were more than 100 in line. I am 57 years old and this is the first time there were more than 3 people present prior to the doors opening. Usually I am the first and only voter at opening. I finished voting by 7:00. The tech still had about 14 machines to start up and get running. About 60 people had voted and about 250 in line. The entire crowd was Students and people older than me. We're next door to [Ohio State University].

This problem is a constant gripe of Democrats: there is simply not a proper, proportional allocation of infrastructure to meet the needs of densely populated communities. Indeed, the Huffington Post has been getting tons emails from urban locales reporting a lack of machines, election workers and even ballots necessary to deal with the high turnout.

ELECTORAL REFORM AND VOTING EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES HAD BETTER BE PRETTY HIGH UP ON A LIST OF PRIORITIES - THIS IS DISGRACEFUL - WE ARE NOT A THIRD-WORLD COUNTRY.....

THERE HAS GOT TO BE A FEDERAL STANDARDIZATION OF BALLOTS - THAT THEN GO TO THE STATE GOVERNMENTS TO FILL IN STATE/COUNTY/MUNICIPAL ISSUES AND CANDIDATES.....

BUT ALL BALLOTS SHOULD BE A STANDARD SIZE, STANDARD COLOR, STANDARD SHAPE, STANDARD WEIGHT OF PAPER - STANDARD, STANDARD, STANDARD.......

AND THERE SHOULD BE PAPER BACKUP AND RECORDS FOR ALL VOTING MACHINES........AND THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE BACKUP PAPER BALLOTS - IN CASE OF MECHANICAL OR ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AT THE VOTING PLACES.

WE CAN PUT A MAN ON THE MOON - BUT WE CANNOT DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT AN EFFICIENT, EFFECTIVE, HONEST VOTING SYSTEM.....................SOMETHING IS DEFINITELY WRONG HERE!!!

Yes, if Dieboldt (company that supports the Republicans) did not design and provide the machines, we wouldn't have this problem. But, Dieboldt Corp. is a good friend of Bush and they also happen to make and supply the machines. Oh no, no conflict of interest there!

Correction: Diebold has no "t", my error.

1 voting machine for 1 polling place?! Thats criminal! I can see a class action suit here. Gotta send a WAY TO GO to all those voters that stood in what had to be hours just to cast their ballot on that one machine.

Just went to Yahoo to check mail. They are reporting that voting is going smoothly everywhere! Not a word about any of the incidents described below or in the story above. I've noticed similar stories in the last few days at Yahoo and have become disgusted with them. After the election I'm changing my address.

Hope the poll-watchers are keeping a close eye on Ohio. Anyone who saw former elections commissioner Ken Blackwell spewing his toxic invective on Hardball knows the roots of voter suppression and dirty tricks run deep in that state after his tenure. It'll be a big surprise if Ohio doesn't end up back in the crosshairs of the FEC.

Keep getting out and make sure to vote before the polls close, don't think it is won based on exist polls we are too close to victory. VOTE.

In the clip today of Palin voting in her hick town, I saw and counted at least 8 voting booths. Only two other people in the shots.

So much for Governor Charlie Crist, purportedly the "fair Republican", with his empty gesture extending voting hours.

This time around, some vigorous prosecutions of GOP lackeys for interfering with and suppressing voting would serve as a welcome air-freshener and a no-nonsense warning to Republican future-election-vandals-in-training.

"fair Republican" is an oxymoron in this election. Charlie talks out of both sides of his mouth.... and has gone back on most of his campaign promises.

After all, he IS a republican.

In California, it's 1,000 registered voters per precinct. How hard is that? Unless you're LOOKING to mess things up, setting up enough machines in enough precincts is third grade math.

That's exactly how it should be. With 1000 voters per precinct you can have hand counts done in less than an hour!

In Canada our elections are run by the Federal govt if it is a federal election, provincial govt if it is a provincial election.. We do not register as affiliated to one party or the other and the rolls are done based on the address on your income tax. There is no bias for one party or the other as the people working at the polls are hired by the govt.
We vote with pencils and paper and in my adult lifetime I have never seen a problem. I agree give these people a paper and a pencil.

Well we do have that lovely feature called vote of non-confidence which has been used.
Yes our election was over before you knew it and thank God we have had too many in the last few years. Why? trying to get rid of Stephen Harper it is okay he does not have a majority govt.

Rachel Maddow is right. This is shameful and amounts to a poll tax. WHEN Obama wins tonight, this is one of the first things his administration will need to start working on. No one should be disenfranchised based on where they live.
