TMZ, of all sites, has an interesting story up about a political saboteur telling Democrats in Deerfield Beach, Florida that they are supposed to vote at a different location.

Putting aside, for the moment the dirty tricks going on, there is another important nugget to glean from the story.

Nearly 400 people were firmly planted in line at 6:15 this morning, waiting for the polls to open at 7:00 AM. There is one voting machine to accommodate all of them.

This is a predominantly African-American community, with only one machine to punch in residents' votes.

Contrast that with an email we received from a voter near Columbus, Ohio, where, he says, historically very few people show up to vote. There were 14 voting machines on hand -- in this case, a needed amount for the influx of nearby college students showing up to the polls.

At 6:10 I was 31st in line. By the time the doors opened there were more than 100 in line. I am 57 years old and this is the first time there were more than 3 people present prior to the doors opening. Usually I am the first and only voter at opening. I finished voting by 7:00. The tech still had about 14 machines to start up and get running. About 60 people had voted and about 250 in line. The entire crowd was Students and people older than me. We're next door to [Ohio State University].

This problem is a constant gripe of Democrats: there is simply not a proper, proportional allocation of infrastructure to meet the needs of densely populated communities. Indeed, the Huffington Post has been getting tons emails from urban locales reporting a lack of machines, election workers and even ballots necessary to deal with the high turnout.

National elections have to be taken out of the hands of the States. They have manifested either underhand manipulation of the vote or are simply incompetent.

Alternatively, a law must be passed - just as in congressional districting, specifying:

1. The number of machines per one 1000 electors.
2. The number of people to be employed per 1000 electors.
3. Early voting to be nationally binding, two weeks before the election.
4. Voting by mail (absentee voting) to be a legally binding option for electors.
5. Election is performed through scanning machines - not funny 'weighted' Republican innovations...
6. Election Day is a National Holiday.
7. Announcements of Exit Polls is not allowed before the closure of polling in the last state.
8. Only candidates and their campaigns may conduct canvassing and hustings within 48 hours of the opening of the polling stations - no Hassleback, or hustle-forward, or hustle at all.

WHAT is this bull c.r.a.p??????? The people have got to rise up and put an end to this kind of discrimination and attempt to alter the will of the people......

This is NOT acceptable any longer......Obama has got to launch a voter reform movement in this country...one primary day, one method of voting that is tamper proof, and the campaign season cannot start before January of the year the election is in.

Equal justice for all!

this is UN-AMERICAN and has to stop. President Obama, please make this your #1 priority.
We are not a third-world country, where criminals can hijack elections. If we don't have free and fair elections, we have nothing.

WTF? They have known the problems from the past. Why is this still happening? How funny that the U.S. sends people to watch over other countries' elections, yet WE need someone to look over ours. Pathetic.

What we need is serious election reforms. In this day and age to have these discriminatory practices still going on is ridiculous, but we know that the republicans cannot play fair.

Remember when Bush was runninng the brown shirts were outside the polling places and there was barely a mention. The MSM just loves to play the race card. Has anyone asked them why are they there? But much will speculate. They are certified. Could it be that there were problems there before and they want to assure everyone votes? I think that is more of the answer than looking at this as hampering people.

why are the ballots getting damp? are you guys voting in tents? seriously, all Americans must demand a better electoral process. You guys should be voting with a pencil and a piece of paper like every other Western democracy.

Sonny..I agree..The voting process is not complicated. But even with a pencil & paper..some will find a way to screw even that up. . It was known that millions of new people would be voting..so why weren't they ready ? Or was it planned ? There are many in the' ruling class' ( those relative few who own and control our country ) that do not want to lose their power !
Too much power held by so few is dangerous. Absolute power corrupts. History has proven that over and over. GO OBAMA ! if he gets elected...let's keep him honest. Hold his feet to the fire, so the powers that be do not side track him. We must keep alert

If we manage to get a Dem government then they should enact a "no republican vote" until if ever they can learn to play well with others. This is utterly rediculous in this day and age. Statistics show dems outnumber republicans and we should be able to put a stop to their terrible lying stealing tactics. They are the lowest of the low!

Oh, I think the Repugs just need more competion - a conservative candidate, a populist candidate, and a progressive candidate for presidential elections.

Our right to vote becomes a fight to vote in some areas of this country. The Republicans never have to face any shortages - the Golden Rule being those who have the gold make/break/bend the rules.

Same issues in Charleston, South Carolina. My polling place (diverse, but generally a republican district - although its changing!) had 12 machines, two not working. Isle of Palms (affluent, not very populated) had 12 machines. Longpoint (predominantly white) had 15 machines. And yet, the Hampton Park polling station and polling stations in North Charleston (predominantly progressive, and large African-American communities) had 2 machines each. People there were waiting in line for 4+ hours.

12 machines in a sparsely populated area ? Yep..I believe that some of this is planned.
Fewer machines in Dem areas, or some machines that just ' happen ' to break down in minority areas. Same old same old crap.. and hard to prove. Dieboldt, who makes most of the machines....How secure are they ??

This is easily corrected . For the person who made this decision of such punitive allocation = JAIL !
For interfering in an election and Violating peoples Civil Rights . When such an official is seen on TV being taken into custody , others who make such decisions will get the message ; That Peoples access to the polls is no longer to be detirmined by skin color , ethnicity , income, real estate values , party , hair style ,shoe size or any other illegal or extra-legal criteria .
We are Done with THAT !
People need to demand that which was claimed earlier today , Namely : This amounts to a poll tax . Unless the time ,dignity and physical suffering of some people in this nation is to be Officially valued at NOTHING , then this treatment is a Poll Tax ; I E extracting payment of a different kind from some of our citizens in order to vote.
The experience at the polls does not have to be identical, BUT 10 minutes for some versus 8 hours outside in the weather for others , That is an unjustified burden on some people via government decision . Also, please tell me how this does not violate the equal protection clause of the constitution .

You're correct. Whomever is responable for the lack of machines in Dem or minority areas
should go to jail. .Our laws are too lax..

why is this problem never ever fixed?
There were 8 years to fix this problem.

Why does it reoccur every election? Does anyone think to address it before the elections? How about asking for more machines beforehand?

Just as countless volumes of research demonstrate that sampling would greatly improve the accuracy of the census, it would also likely improve the accuracy of elections. Pollster.com and BetFair.com are probably a better reflection of voter preference then the outcome of the election itself.

But of course, Article I Section 2 says, "Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons."

So sampling is unconstitutional. But this clause is obviously arcane, already amended (14th) to account for the emancipation of slaves, and it should be amended again. Otherwise, the original text lives on in the practical limitations of enumeration. Are we still counting blacks as only 3/5ths of a white person?
