Machine

TMZ, of all sites, has an interesting story up about a political saboteur telling Democrats in Deerfield Beach, Florida that they are supposed to vote at a different location.

Putting aside, for the moment the dirty tricks going on, there is another important nugget to glean from the story.

Nearly 400 people were firmly planted in line at 6:15 this morning, waiting for the polls to open at 7:00 AM. There is one voting machine to accommodate all of them.

This is a predominantly African-American community, with only one machine to punch in residents' votes.

Contrast that with an email we received from a voter near Columbus, Ohio, where, he says, historically very few people show up to vote. There were 14 voting machines on hand -- in this case, a needed amount for the influx of nearby college students showing up to the polls.

At 6:10 I was 31st in line. By the time the doors opened there were more than 100 in line. I am 57 years old and this is the first time there were more than 3 people present prior to the doors opening. Usually I am the first and only voter at opening. I finished voting by 7:00. The tech still had about 14 machines to start up and get running. About 60 people had voted and about 250 in line. The entire crowd was Students and people older than me. We're next door to [Ohio State University].

This problem is a constant gripe of Democrats: there is simply not a proper, proportional allocation of infrastructure to meet the needs of densely populated communities. Indeed, the Huffington Post has been getting tons emails from urban locales reporting a lack of machines, election workers and even ballots necessary to deal with the high turnout.

Do not read too much into this....I am also a poll worker at a FL site that is in a predominantly white polling place with only 1 machine as well that kept breaking down because the air was dampining the ballots.....We too had a huge line at 6:30am.....

It seems to me that if you have a machine that breaks even once, it shouild be pulled from the line, bagged, and quarantined until it can be inspected for tampering. The Vote is too important to trust to cheap, faulty equipment.

They shouldn't have ANY voting machines, and neither should anyone else either. They're not secure and there is no way to really verify that your vote went to the candidate you selected, or was counted at all. The display on the screen and the paper recipt mean nothing, as these computers can be programmed to tell you one thing while actually doing another, and Diebold will not let anyone look at the programming code to verify that the machines actually work the way they're supposed to. Optical scan machines are not much better.

PAPER BALLOTS ONLY! Its the only way to be sure.

Hand-counted paper ballots, with observers from all major parties and state-appointed non-partisan observers watching every step of the process, from regional counting to transport to state tallies.

Ballots with 2 large circles that are far apart from eachother. And the circles are to be filled with ink with a writing pen. No brainer. And them put in a lock box, with officals from the both partys being present. And also how about the people from far away areas to beable to send in their ballots, elderly and handicapped, or people who can not afford to wait in lines for hours at a time in some places? Just throwing out some ideas. If Canada said they can do it, I don't see why we can't go back to the old fashion way. Obama/Biden 08"

Your right.

There is absolutely no reason why you need machines at all; if Canada can count 30 million paper ballots by hand before nine PM on election day, while ensuring there is a meaningful way to conduct a judicial recount on any dubious or too close for comfort results, the US can, too. All that's missing is the will.

I agree. I don't know why Democrats have gone along with this massive increase in the use of machines the last few years. I know 2000 was a nightmare, but we went from one bad system (butterfly punch cards) to an even worse system. This is crazy.

ballots counted by hand in Canada, and results declared by 9 p.m....when polls close at 8 p.m. One hour, scrutineers from each party on hand to look at each ballot for problems, everything organized should a recount be necessary. And no long lineups.

It just takes dividing the country into small areas to keep the number of ballots to be counted low in each area (usually about 1000 registered voters per polling area; 8 - 10 polling areas in one location, such as a school gym). The cost isn't high, the results are known very quickly, and everyone has high trust in the system.

Canadians shake their heads in disbelief at the U.S. election day. If there were these kinds of problems and anomolies in third world elections the U.S. would be talking about banana republic elections.

They can contact local officials but they have no power, local, county and state election officials control this.

But it's all perfectly legal.

What I want to know is why on earth we have partisan Secy. of States to run elections. Even if they do everything above board, there will always be the perception of partisanship.

And one of the provisions of the Help America Vote (Republican) Act of 2002 was to *require* that elections be run by Secretaries of State rather than non-partisan or bipartisan election boards. The Republicans who hijacked HAV(R)A six years ago knew exactly what they were doing.

Thank you TMZ!

I hope they were not too damaged when they dropped them. The report doesn't say that the machines have been plugged in and made functional, just that they were delivered. For all we know they are sitting in a corner.

I think Obama will win be big enough that these tactics will have a negligible to very little effect on the outcome of the race. That's why Obama needs to win big. I have confidence that He and DNC will work quickly to clean up this mess and save the next election from the spectre of Republican deceit and corruption. If there is a hell, Republicans will be rollin' deep down there.

Obama will do what he can, but the DNC is no less corrupt than the GOP. Neither has anything but their own future in mind today.

hopefully another mcdone lie!!!! there isn't much he can do this year, i really don't believe it. O's people are the smartest around. he didn't put all this time and sweat to let someone drop him like that. also, THE EYES OF THE WORLD ARE WATCHING!!!! we aren't the only ones tracking this election. I'm not worried about that. I do wonder though how many people will change their minds in the voting booth. That does concern me.

I worked for Election Protection this morning (7am - 11am shift) and was placed at ground zero (for elections; no disrespect meant) at the Palm Beach County Elections Supervisors Office. This was of course, the site for the 2000 fiasco and the last thing anyone wanted (maybe some nefarious Republicans) and am glad to report very little trouble. Standard issue problems, i.e. moved and didn't notify Board of Elections; didn't know the correct polling place, etc. This is not to say that the remainder of the day went smoothly, but I did befriend some of the local police and sheriffs department personnel, gave them my phone number and told them to call me if there was anything "fishy". No calls - I am confident that Palm Beach county will not continue to throw the nation/electoral process into chaos

The Palm Beach County Supervisor of elections is a Democrat. He is the one responsible for the voting in his county. The county Board of Supervisors are also Democrats. They are responsible for the purchase of the voting machines. Sounds like a typical Democrat run government.

Agreed. Black-box voting machines are hackable enough as it is. Sending your votes over the Web on top of that?? NEVER, NEVER, NEVER via the Internet. Never.

...

Did I mention never?

President Obama: Your friends here in Canada can help with electoral reform that is so sadly needed in your land.

Have an independent, non partisan national election board. We call it Elections Canada. Rules are the same in every riding from coast to coast.
Voter List - take from income tax returns. When people have moved, allow them to simply send in new address information.
Don't ask for party affiliation on anything prior to election day.
Voter shows picture ID and proof of address in the riding on election day, even if they are not on the list.
Each voter gets one piece of paper called a ballot and a little pencil.
Each voter votes in private
Folds said ballot and deposits in sealed box.
Said ballots are counted.
Said ballots are kept in a secure area
If a race is too close or contested, said ballots are counted again.
Voter suppression, fraud, intimidation, interference, etc, are criminal acts that are prosecuted so that it is not a popular thing to even want to try.

Its that easy!
Good luck today.

"Voter List - take from income tax returns."

Ah. but there's your problem. 40% of our citizens don't pay income tax. Luckily for them, they are out voting right now to put a man in office who will take money from those unfortunate souls who pay income tax and give it to those unfortunate souls who pay no income tax. I'm sure it's a fine plan and will do wonders for boosting our sagging economy.

This country desperately needs to invite international observers to witness our elections. It's pathetic that we do no better than we do, yet consider ourselves viable observers of other nations' election processes but not viable for *observation* ourselves.
