PORTLAND, Ore. — Democrat Jeff Merkley has ousted Republican Sen. Gordon Smith, a victory once considered unlikely against an incumbent who had highlighted his efforts to work across the aisle in hopes of surviving a wave of anti-GOP sentiment.

Smith's loss _ the first for an Oregon senator in 40 years _ means Democrats are poised to have at least 57 votes in the Senate next year. He had been the last GOP senator standing in the three Pacific Coast states south of Alaska.

"There's a lot of work for us to do together," Merkley told a crowd of supporters Thursday morning as they jammed a room at Portland State University and spilled into the hallway.

"It's time for a very different approach," he said, in such areas as health care, job creation, affordable housing and energy independence.

Smith gave a concession speech from his home in Pendleton.

"There was simply a tide too strong for us to stem. We understand that," said Smith, his arm around his wife.

About 82 percent of the vote had been counted statewide early Thursday, showing Merkley with a margin of more than 40,000 votes.

The difference was smaller before more vote totals started coming in from Multnomah County, which includes Portland. A flood of votes that Oregonians delivered on Election Day have kept election workers tallying ballots for days.

For Merkley, it was a remarkable personal victory. The state House speaker and policy wonk from east Portland was far from the first choice of national Democrats looking for a challenger to Smith.

For Smith, the election represented a stinging rejection by voters of his political strategy. He ran TV ads touting his work with Barack Obama, Ted Kennedy and other prominent Democrats on issues such as alternative energy.

Merkley countered with a TV ad featuring Obama directly urging Oregonians to vote for Merkley. It was the only TV ad Obama did for another candidate for the general election, showing the importance that national Democrats placed on the Oregon race.

There will be at least 55 Democrats in the Senate, plus two independents who align with them. The outcomes of three Senate races remain uncertain: A runoff election is to be held in Georgia, a recount is scheduled in Minnesota, and thousands of ballots remain to be counted in a close race in Alaska.

A year ago, most observers doubted that Merkley could defeat the better-funded Smith. Merkley turned the race in his direction with millions of dollars from national Democrats and a campaign blitz that took him to 100 communities around the state.

Merkley told crowds that Smith was a Bush Republican who was more interested in bailing out Wall Street than helping people on Main Street.

He's the first Oregonian to oust an incumbent senator since Republican Bob Packwood ousted Democratic Sen. Wayne Morse in 1968.

(This version CORRECTS that the ad featuring Obama was the only one Obama did for the general election, not during the whole year.)

There's a lot of reporting running around that the Dems can still make it to sixty. It ain't happening.

If you count Merkely, the Dems have 55 seats. Bernie Sanders of Vermont - an Independent - caucuses with the Dems and usually votes with the Dems so we could count it as 56. There are three contested races out there. If Franken (MN) Begich, (AK) and Martin (Ga) win, and that looks pretty dubious that all three will make it - Franken and Begich are trailing by a hair, Martin by a substantial amount - that still leaves one seat.

That one seat is Joe Lieberman. LIeberman is an independent. He has already said it would be a bad idea for the Dems to have sixty seats. He spoke at the Republican convention. He's not going to push them over...

I'm still scratching my head over the fact that AK has voted for a convicted felon and it looks like he may very well win!

Don't know about the others, but Franken has a damn good chance. Early reports from the recount (which will take a couple weeks to finish) say that 1 in 200 ballots are filled out wrong, but can still be counted as long as the intent is clear. People were checking the scantron bubbles!

One down, three to go.

Sixty would be nice, but I'm totally happy with 57.

Woo woo is right. As an Oregonian, I am so happy we have given the Democratic Party Senator #6. And to think, another "community organizer" for having been the head of Habitat for Humanity. Now let's work on getting Alaska, Minnesota, and Georgia.

Another moderate goes down, where dose that leave the GOP, a regional Bible belt party? Rove and Bush did a great job with that fascist permanent Republican majority concept. The problem is the country pulled back and shifted further to the left, if the GOP thinks shifting further to the right without any compromise and talking about the good olds days of Reagan, they will only be relevant in rural low population states. Considering they have lost Virginia and are losing North Carolina, there hold on the South is beginng to wane. An interesting statistic is George Bush completely reversed the gains made by Ronald Reagan, the Republican base grew over 10% during the so-called Reagan revolution and became significantly smaller than that under Bush. The GOP kicked just about everyone out of the tent, even young people, except for white rural Christians.

Yah, to me these are mixed victories. Lincoln Chafee, Gordon Smith ... you hate to see moderate Republicans lose, 'cause it does just further tilt the bias of the party to the far(out) right. I'm glad for the Democrats, but I do believe in two parties and you need a viable, sensible, second party to keep the other party in line.

Hopefully the wise heads in the Democratic Party will prevail and they'll do some good things while they have this momentum behind them.

I'm a big fan of Lincoln Chafee, he's an Independent now. Lincoln Chafee showed real independence and courage being the only Republican to vote against Bush's war resolution. Chafee knew that when Bush was reelected in 2004, that he would be running against Bush 2006. His choice was stay a Republican and lose or go Independent and lose funding that RI needed, that's GOP hardball and there is no love lost between Chafee and God's Own Party.

How do you "compromise" with right wing idelogical theocrats whose views are dictatorship driven? The RINO minority in the GOP are good soldiers unlike DINO's who vote their yellow dog views in contradiction to party unity on a vote.

RINO's usually have been told by the GOP leadership to vote Right Wing or they would face a conservative Republican in the primary. They did it to Spector and he got the message, and so did Snowe and Collins and Chafee and.....yes Smith.

I say, good riddance to them all.

Gordon Smith as a "Moderate"? You jest, sir. Gordo has played this "moderate" card only to diffuse opposition. An example of Gordo was standing in the well of the Senate and speaking against Bush on the Iraqi War - However, he, then, voted with Bush. However, in his insipid ads during the campaign, he used the speech and not the vote to keep the "moderate" canard afloat.

Now, he can return to his ag plants in Eastern Oregon and check the IDs of the many undocumented workers working under his wife's direction, as Gordo railed for stopping any undocumeted worker from entering and working in this land.

The Republican party hasn't been viable OR sensible for decades.

Overall, America does not educate itself as quickly as many other developed countries. But, we do eventually get around to it. That necessarily shrinks the mouth-breather base that support the GOP; the constituency that Rove et al. relied upon to be motivated by primitive instincts of fear, etc.

I spent every Saturday, since early August, going door to door in order to try and convince my fellow Dems -and a few Greens and Independents- here in Oregon (Washington County), to 'do the right thing' and send another republican packing into retirement. I didn't know Jeff Merkley from Adam -and I still don't- but I knew the difference between a Democrat and a republican, and the import of adding one more Democrat to that very slim Senatorial margin we had in Washington D C -and that was all I needed to go on... I feel very much as though my time was spent wisely -regardless of the outcome- and I'll be doing it all over again for the next candidate that challenges any republican down the road as well. But for now however, I think I'll just sleep in this Saturday -and then see what next week has in store. Thanks Oregon. We did good... :-)

Congratulations, Senator-elect Merkley!

I'm a huge fan of Thom Hartmann, who does his show out of Portland, and I live-stream the Ed Schultz WeGotEd.comm) show from Portland WKPOJ. As close as your race is, you must know just how vital to your election hopes good, hard-fightin', tough-talking "liberal talk radio" in Oregon has been.

As important as GETTING THE WORD OUT - defending Democratic candidates for Repub slights, slurs & smears; holding Republicans to account for the SECOND case of Economic Self-Destruction brought about by INSIDER CORRUPTION (the S&L $500 billion, in 1980s money, the first); and defefending Democratic legislation and programs from Right-Wing attacks - ALL these functions of liberal, pro-Democratic TALK RADIO are VITAL to the Democrats sustaining their popular vote majorities and mandate to govern.

It took good organization and TOUGH SELLING to get those programs in to legislation in the past...

... and it will take a VIBRANT, WELL SUPPORTED "liberal" and pro-Democratic RADIO PRESENCE for the Democratic congress and administration to KEEP THEIR SUPPORT STRONG in the coming months.

SENATOR MERKLEY, here's hoping you will LEAD the work in the US Senate, to MAKE SURE that PROGRESSIVE RADIO TALKERS have the means to COMMUNICATE WITH MILLIONS OF AMERICAN VOTERS in areas where they are now EXCLUDED (CENSORED!) by Right-Wing corporate radio ownership bias.

Here's hoping more Congressional seats get filled by Democractic nominees.

Tom Hartmann intelligent talk radio, not flashy. When Tom interviews a conservative he can uncover and challenge how completely impractical and ideological there positions are without disrespecting them, a great talent. I love history and Hartmann' s take on it is always educational. The guy should reach more listeners.

What Rove and Chambliss did to Max Cleland was beyond the pale. The right wing cowards on the radio turned Cleland, who was blown up crossing a mined field while caring another solider into a carton. Why was Max Cleland taken down by the right wing scum, because he would not support HLS unless it's staff could join the same union all government employees belong to, he was call a trader over this. I guess the positive part is that HLS can be more easily cleaned out, the place is a mess.

I heard a comment that Maine's Olympia Snow and Susan Collins have become very powerful because they sometimes agree with the Democrats.

Gee, too bad McCain forgot about these competent women when he chose his VP. LOL I am lying, I'm glad he picked Palin, it helped him lose.

Susan Collins is a winner because she has shown some independence, she is not an Ideologue and considering Republicans are systematically being wiped out in the North East her independence has served her well.

Considering into the 1960s the North East was a Republican strong hold, this trend should be more than troubling to the GOP and running further to the right to placate an increasly smaller white rural base and spouting the tenets of the great Ronald Reagan who was 1st elected 28 years ago and left office with an approval rating significantly lower than that of Bill Clinton is not the solution. The Bush disaster will be as devastating to the GOP, as Hoover and the Great Depression was in 1932. When Truman a friend of Hoover asked him for advice on a recession in 1950, the Whitehouse was flooded with hate mail, this is how deep negative feelings against Hoover ran.
