CHICAGO — Barack Obama began his first full day as president-elect with the simple pleasure of having breakfast with his daughters, the type of everyday family activity he often had to sacrifice during the long campaign.

Afterward, Obama left the house alone, clad in workout clothes, a ball cap and sunglasses, and spent an hour at a friend's apartment building, where he uses the gym. Then it was back home to clean up before heading to the office _ a downtown office building where he was holding a conference call to thank campaign staff around the country. The president-elect wore a suit but no tie, and carried a black satchel.

Asked how much sleep he'd gotten on the night of his historic victory, Obama told reporters: "Not as much as I'd like."

Obama planned to stay in Chicago through the week, with a quiet weekend at home. He was still trying to figure out arrangements regarding his grandmother, who died Sunday. A trip to Hawaii for the small private memorial she requested was likely by the end of the year.

Obama's staff said he would address the media by the end of the week, but Cabinet announcements were not planned that soon.

In addition to the many decisions he faces in getting the Obama administration up and running, he has personal decisions to be make, too. Such as when to move his family to Washington and where his 10- and 7-year-old daughters will go to school.

And then there was the matter of choosing the family pet. "Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House," Obama told his daughters in his victory speech.

In a congratulatory call to Obama Tuesday night, President Bush pledged to make a smooth transition and extended an invitation to the Obama family to visit their new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

On Wednesday afternoon, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama spoke by telephone, and the first lady also invited her successor to visit the White House with her daughters, according to Michelle Obama's spokeswoman, Katie McCormick Lelyveld.

Lelyveld said a date for the visit would be set soon.

Memo to Jesse Jackson, Tavis Smiley and the coat tail dwellers of old.

America shone brightly its incite of where we are and where we are going We are also aware of the coat tail dwellers that look for the camera opt, to shed tears.

Where were you and your divisiveness 2 years even two months ago?

There are no Coat tails to hold onto here from Obama. His direction and path are light years away. The Black community appreciates your debts paid honorably.

Yet we are aware and mindful enough to realize someone looking to get in only to take over with their feelings of want they think they deserve

Sit back learn and watch Barack he is more than you can envision, he is not looking for accolades as you and Tavis are he is moving to unite and help perfect a more perfect union TOGETHER!!!!

This is OUR President check Baracks back story he is -- ALL of US!!!!!!

I quite agree with this comment. This is not about the first african american, or the civil rights struggle as all african americans seem to think. This is for Obama all encompassing. He is seeking to bring about peace on a worldwide basis.Something he will not be able to achieve. However like you said he is the President of the US..and seemingly by extension the World and not only of African Americans. I especially refer to Jesse Jackson's comment that he is not black enough when I say this. He is black and white and hispanic and what ever colour he needs to be.

"This is not about the first african american, or the civil rights struggle as all african americans seem to think."

That is an extremely condescending statement that assumes facts without any evidence to support them. Who is it that you believe is speaking on behalf of "all african american" and claiming exclusive rights to the benefits of this new president? It is not exclusively african americans who insist on using the phrase "the first african-american president." I would venture to guess that most people, irrespective of their race or ethnicity, understand the responsibilities of a president to serve all of the people. Imaginary controversy and divisiveness are contrary to everything that Obama and McCain sought to achieve through their speeches last night. They both spoke of us coming together to address the serious issues facing this country. If he fails, we all fail. It won't matter your race.

You gotta love a man who has essentially been perfect, yet admitted that he is not.

Those hateful Repubs will continue to dog him. See -CNN now decides to make up some type of list to "hold" him to his promises. Those racist demons are going to pay for their slimy grimy campaign tactics sooner or later.

David Gregory... go away. He just called Bush's statement about Obama, "elequant" and "heart felt". It was a read off 3x5 cards that sounded no different than any other Bush stammering crap.

I most sincerely hope the Obama family will consider the plight of shelter animals and rescue one (or TWO) from their local shelter. It would sure help those animals.

Shelter animals are the best pets in the world!!
