CHICAGO — Barack Obama began his first full day as president-elect with the simple pleasure of having breakfast with his daughters, the type of everyday family activity he often had to sacrifice during the long campaign.

Afterward, Obama left the house alone, clad in workout clothes, a ball cap and sunglasses, and spent an hour at a friend's apartment building, where he uses the gym. Then it was back home to clean up before heading to the office _ a downtown office building where he was holding a conference call to thank campaign staff around the country. The president-elect wore a suit but no tie, and carried a black satchel.

Asked how much sleep he'd gotten on the night of his historic victory, Obama told reporters: "Not as much as I'd like."

Obama planned to stay in Chicago through the week, with a quiet weekend at home. He was still trying to figure out arrangements regarding his grandmother, who died Sunday. A trip to Hawaii for the small private memorial she requested was likely by the end of the year.

Obama's staff said he would address the media by the end of the week, but Cabinet announcements were not planned that soon.

In addition to the many decisions he faces in getting the Obama administration up and running, he has personal decisions to be make, too. Such as when to move his family to Washington and where his 10- and 7-year-old daughters will go to school.

And then there was the matter of choosing the family pet. "Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House," Obama told his daughters in his victory speech.

In a congratulatory call to Obama Tuesday night, President Bush pledged to make a smooth transition and extended an invitation to the Obama family to visit their new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

On Wednesday afternoon, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama spoke by telephone, and the first lady also invited her successor to visit the White House with her daughters, according to Michelle Obama's spokeswoman, Katie McCormick Lelyveld.

Lelyveld said a date for the visit would be set soon.

Just my 2 cents - Please Pres. Obama get your new dog from the SPCA.... it will make a difference to the whole world to see you do that... : )

I second that motion. As an SPCA volunteer, I know how many beautiful and devoted dogs and cats sit waiting for 'forever homes'. If one of them made their home in the White House, it would be a very, very good thing.

Write and tell him that! You know, he listens to everybody! I just read a story in the local fishwrap about a little boy who was dying, and told the Make A Wish foundation that he wanted to see Obama. Obama invited him to a rally, flew him out there, then made arrangements for him and his family to come to Chicago for last night's big party and seated him with all the hotshot politicos.

He listens. He's a total mensch.

I think the White House needs both a kitty kat and a puppy dog from a shelter.

The Obamas already have announced the new member of the family will be a rescue doggie! My shelter kitties are so proud!

Some are in an apparent rut with regards to the results of the man most of chose to be our next CEO of the USA. Well, if it helps any please think of the past eight years and the downward spiral we've been caught in and perhaps you'll be more open-minded with accepting the change that we so desperately need. My words- " My worth is not determined by the labels that are attached to the clothes I wear, but rather by my character and the ingredients that makes me uniquely myself." The same applies to all whom embraces it and all whom are willing to accept people who are different from themselves, and for those who are not afraid to look at one self and are content with what they see. Barack is an extraordinary man, with the will and with the ideas that can unite us as one, and restore our faith in our government and our hopes for the future. If you're afraid of change, that's ok, but to not be willing to accept change is another issue within itself. Change is good, embrace it and try to heal from the trivial issues that's plaguing you from being a fair and objective citizen... Congratulations Mr. Obama you won a battle that needed to be won and you deserve to have won it, and congratulations to Mr. McCain for conceding with class and dignity you are an American hero and for that I am truly grateful..

I personally was surprised that McCain gave an excellent and supportive speech. Had he conducted himself that way throughout the campaign, he may have won. That shows that bowing to evil does not win.

today is the first day of the rest of our lives, the only thing that has been won is the opportunity to repair the damage and neglect done in the last 30 years to our country. This is just the wake up call America, get yer butts off the couch and let's get to work, the fundies aren't resting, neither can we.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think about having a real, beautiful family with younger children in the White House? I remember the Kennedy days of Caroline and John-Boy running in the yard, riding the horse and just being kids....it's going to be a great time!

Eh, I gotta admit, one of the few things I liked about W's presidency was his offspring.

I kinda liked it, having a couple of sk.anky (and hot) girls running around as First Kids :P.

Today on The View Whoopi made a similar comment and her and Joy starting saying there is going to be some real love makking in the WH now.

Its funny because last night the hubby kept commenting that he knew Michelle was going to give Barack some extra special presidential love when they got home.

I can't get two songs out of my mind: "Oh Happy Day:' and "Beautiful Day".

I am a 47-year-old white woman who lives in Pittsburgh. I went home for lunch today and there were two men painting trim on a house about 5 doors down from my house. One black man was holding the ladder and one white man was on top painting. As I walked by, they both said hi. I took a few more steps and the black man yelled out to me, "Hey". I turned around and he motioned me back. I walked back toward him and he was sort of sizing me up and asked "Barack?" I said yes. He said "I knew it".

He then proceeded to tell me the story of how he met Obama at a rally here last week and got to shake his hand. He told me how he and his wife were at the polling place at 4:45 am (to be opened at 7) and how he was the first person in his precinct to vote for Obama. Let me tell you. I will NEVER forget this painter. The emotion in his eyes and his voice are something I will always remember.

As I was ready to leave, we hugged. Two total strangers, one middle-aged white woman and one middle-aged black man. Does anyone still think that Obama doesn't have something we have been missing in this country for so long?

I know expectations are high for Barack Obama and hopefully he'll achieve some of the goals expected of him.My expectations aren't too lofty,I'll appreciate an honest, compassionate and pragmatic man as my president and expect him to do his best to stay that way.I think all the good things people are looking for will come to fruition when everyone understands as all his supporters do, that he's the real deal.

I know some people aren't fans of Jimmy Carter, but I consider him to be one of our nations greatest presidents.I believe Obama was cut from the same cloth, honesty and integrity are paramount in both of these men and I will back President Obama to the hilt just as I did President Carter.

I feel better today than I have in a long time.

Jimmy Carter is more of a great man (Nobel Peace Prize) than a great President -- but his Presidency certainly does deserve a lot more credit than he's usually -- especially in the area of negotiating a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt that has made the world a LOT safer. He certainly deserved that Nobel. And yes, I think Obama IS cut from the same cloth as Carter except for, perhaps, a much more pragmatic bent....

I could not have said it better myself. I have spent two years blogging and yesterday was the final result that could not have turned out better. He has walked in to a mess and as much as we would like things changed asap, its going to take time to sort everything. Let us be patient and believe that our country is in headed in a better direction. He really is the real deal.

Yes, there is definitely something very positive and promising in the air today! We have an honest, good and strong leader who will lead us towards prosperity and peace.

Just the thought that we'll have someone representing us on the world stage who actually has a command of the English language and correct pronounciation is a major plus for me!!!

I can't count the times I've cringed when W was either giving a speech or meeting with a world leader (especially someone like Tony Blair) and he would just decimate a word...or two. It just made this country appear so ignorant...and you had to wonder what other countries/leaders thought about who was representing us!!!
