Newsweek has released highlights of its Special Election Project, which allowed reporters to gather behind-the-scenes information on the presidential campaigns with an agreement that none of their reporting would be published until after Election Day.

You can read a summary of their report here, and the first chapter of their book here.

Below, some key excerpts -- including news about a cyber attack from an "unknown entity" that hit the presidential campaigns' computers in the summer, prompting an FBI investigation; McCain's advisers fuming at Palin's shopping spree, which was apparently far more extensive than originally reported; and Palin being blocked from speaking on election night by top McCain aide Steve Schmidt.

From Newsweek's press release:

New York--The computer systems of both the Obama and McCain campaigns were victims of a sophisticated cyber attack by an unknown "foreign entity," prompting a federal investigation, Newsweek reports in its exclusive special election issue, "President Obama" on newsstands Thursday, Nov. 6.

At the Obama headquarters in midsummer, technology experts detected what they initially thought was a computer virus, a case of "phishing"--a form of hacking often employed to steal passwords or credit card numbers. But by the next day, both the FBI and the Secret Service came to the campaign with an ominous warning: "You have a problem way bigger than what you understand," an agent told them. "You have been compromised, and a serious amount of files have been loaded off your system." The following day, Obama campaign chief David Plouffe heard from White House chief of staff Josh Bolten, to the same effect: "You have a real problem... and you have to deal with it." The Feds told the Obama campaign in late August that the McCain campaign's computer system had been similarly compromised (a top McCain official confirmed to Newsweek that the campaign's computer system had been hacked and the FBI was had become involved).

As Editor-at-Large Evan Thomas writes, FBI and White House officials told the Obama campaign that they believed that a foreign entity or organization sought to gather information on the evolution of both camps' policy issues--information that might be useful in negotiations with a future administration. The Feds assured the Obama team that it had not been hacked by its political opponents (Obama technical experts later speculated that the hackers were Russian or Chinese). A security firm retained by the Obama campaign took steps to secure its computer system and end the intrusion. White House and FBI officials had no comment earlier this week.

Newsweek's 2008 Special Election Issue marks the magazine's seventh consecutive installment of providing a behind-the-scenes account of the entire presidential campaign. It will be on newsstands Nov. 6-16. The exclusive narrative of the campaign is reported by a separate Newsweek Special Project team that worked for more than a year on this historic campaign. The text of the nearly 50,000-word project will be posted in chapters on Newsweek.com Nov. 5-Nov. 7.

Other highlights from the report:

-- McCain himself rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended. Palin asked to speak along with McCain at his Arizona concession speech but campaign strategist Steve Schmidt vetoed the request.

-- The Obama campaign was provided with reports from the Secret Service showing a sharp and very disturbing increase in threats to Obama in September and early October, at the same time that the crowds at Palin rallies became more frenzied. Michelle Obama was shaken by the vituperative crowds and the hot rhetoric from the GOP candidates. "Why would they try to make people hate us?" Michelle Obama said to a top campaign aide.

-- On the Sunday night before the last debate, McCain's core group of advisers--Steve Schmidt, Rick Davis, adman Fred Davis, strategist Greg Strimple, pollster Bill McInturff and strategy director Sarah Simmons -- met to decide whether or not to tell McCain that the race was effectively over, that he no longer had a chance to win. The consensus in the room was no, not yet, not while he still had "a pulse."

-- The Obama campaign's "New Media" experts created a computer program that would allow a "flusher"--the term for a volunteer who rounds up nonvoters on Election Day--to know exactly who had, and had not, voted in real time. They dubbed it Project Houdini, because of the way names disappear off the list instantly once people are identified as they wait in line at their local polling station.

-- Palin launched her attack on Obama's association with William Ayers, the former Weather Underground bomber, before the campaign had finalized a plan to raise the issue. McCain's advisers were working on a strategy that they hoped to unveil the following week, but McCain had not signed off on it, and top adviser Mark Salter was resisting.

-- McCain also was reluctant to use Obama's incendiary pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright as a campaign issue. He had set firm boundaries: no Jeremiah Wright; no attacking Michelle Obama; no attacking Obama for not serving in the military. McCain balked at an ad using images of children that suggested that Obama might not protect them from terrorism; Schmidt vetoed ads suggesting that Obama was soft on crime (no Willie Hortons); and before word even got to McCain, Schmidt and Salter scuttled a "celebrity" ad of Obama dancing with talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres (the sight of a black man dancing with a lesbian was deemed too provocative).

-- Obama was never inclined to choose Sen. Hillary Clinton as his running mate, not so much because she had been his sometime bitter rival on the campaign trail, but because of her husband. Still, as Hillary's name came up in veep discussions, and Obama's advisers gave all the reasons why she should be kept off the ticket, Obama would stop and ask, "Are we sure?" He needed to be convinced one more time that the Clintons would do more harm than good. McCain, on the other hand, was relieved to face Biden as the veep choice, and not Hillary Clinton, whom the McCain camp had truly feared.

-- McCain was dumbfounded when Congressman John Lewis, a civil-rights hero, issued a press release comparing McCain with former Alabama Gov. George Wallace, a segregationist infamous for stirring racial fears. McCain had devoted a chapter to Lewis in one of his books, "Why Courage Matters" and had so admired Lewis that he had once taken his children to meet him.

-- The debates unnerved both candidates. When he was preparing for the Democratic primary debates, Obama was recorded saying, "I don't consider this to be a good format for me, which makes me more cautious. I often find myself trapped by the questions and thinking to myself, 'You know, this is a stupid question, but let me ... answer it.' So when Brian Williams is asking me about what's a personal thing that you've done [that's green], and I say, you know, 'Well, I planted a bunch of trees.' And he says, 'I'm talking about personal.' What I'm thinking in my head is, 'Well, the truth is, Brian, we can't solve global warming because I f---ing changed light bulbs in my house. It's because of something collective'."

I too , like Obama, have always been astound about the lack of substance in political discussions and Questions staged by the, nothing other than to be called pathetically incompetent – U.S. News Entertainment Media. Although there is no Question stupid enough not to deserve an Answer, an intellectual and intelligent awaken mind naturally will see some Question as banal cause some are simple self-explanatory. But anyway, guess President Obama simple has to dumb himself down while dealing with the dumb U.S. Media (Not you Huffingtonpost!) while avoiding the totally brainless FoXNoise Media. Really FoxNoise should fire all its Anchors, forget News and bring 24 hours only Family Guy! Success guaranteed, since they have no knowledge of anything, even less News, hmm?

I have never learned anything new about Obama that leads me to like him less. On the contrary, I love him more with every new thing I learn. He is so right about the stupid, nonsensical, pseudo-intellectual questions these air-heads keep asking in their oh so somber voices. I tell you, this man is so real. We have been blessed.

So so, it appears our highly 'competent' cough* but often dangerously even, wrong “Intelligence” are already stirring up some "fishy"' things again: White House chief of staff Josh Bolten, : "You have a real problem... and you have to deal with it.", ": "You have a problem way bigger than what you understand," (wow, what ellusive explanation I guess!), “foreign entity or organization”.
Ahh ja, that “foreign” Organization's name is not by any mean GOP (e.g. Stealing the “Change” slogan and political ideas for Mcsame, hmm?); HLS, CIA (Greeting from Cheney, folks!), who have unlimited access to EVERY Computer System connected to the Internet on this Planet with the special-built in “Back Door Keys”, as everyone who knows anything about Made in U.S. Systems knows, No??

But surely President Obama unlike Bush, is intelligent enough, as he is is not that naive to solely receive his Infos through “Briefings” from the U.S. “Intelligence”, we all know has been dangerously wrong before, n'est pas? He w;; get some of his personnel information from the true “Collective”, “WE THE PEOPLE!” on the Internet and Everywhere. And surely he will keep watching LinkTV and continue to read Huffingtonpost!
To Mcsame, Palin. Who?? Can't remember them, I must have just caught the republican Amnesia! :)

Most disturbing was the Secret Service increased threats situation. You could sense that the energy was growing more and more dangerous starting with the palling around with terrorists. (By the way, the terrorist that finally acknowledged today that he hardly knows Barack and like all of the rest of the world...would love to know him better.) Without doubt, the McCain was aware of these threats as well. Did they let up? No...They went harder. And this was AFTER they knew the campaign was almost over. I can understand the competitive instinct and the will to win, but this stuff was like a flagrant foul at the end of a game and you've already lost. And then to be appalled at John Lewis' reaction is like acting surprised when a brawl breaks out. In civics class in 5th grade, when you learned about freedom of speech, you learned that you can't yell "fire" in a theater. Obama was cool (yet again) to stay above the fray on this and just have Michelle bake a couple more cookies for the Secret Service agents. What a class act they are!

The Fierce Urgency, I totally agree that Palin's "palling around with terrorists" remarks perfectly coincided with a Secret Service report of an increase in disturbing and sharp threats to Obama's safety. Palin's inexperience, egoism, impulsivity, unbridled ambition, and propensity for vituperative rhetoric presaged the dangers we would have faced as a nation and as members of the international community if she and John McCain were elected.

That being said, from my reading of this and other articles, I'm not convinced that McCain was aware of everything that was taking place around him. He is 72 years old and he obviously did not have control of his campaign. I believe John McCain was kept in the dark by his own advisors and consequently, he may have been unaware of the hatred and bigotry fomented by his own VP running mate.

I could not be more proud that Barack Obama has been elected to speak for a nation of people intent on moving beyond our sullied history of slavery, racial hatred, sexism, religious bigotry and social inequality. I say this as an AA who lived through Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, Voting Rights Acts and the Women's Liberation Movement.

Yet, I suspect that John McCain may not have known about what was going on at Palin's rallies. It's possible, as this article's title suggests, that McCain's advisors kept him in the dark.

Remember the moment when the old lady at the rally said 'Obama's an Arab' and McCain had to correct her? I think at that moment he realized what his campaign (stress: NOT HE) had created.

Palin continued to veer further and further off the reservation as time went on. 'Countries that are not free?' 'Real America' I think she wanted to keep finding ways to push the base's buttons and whip them up into the frenzy that McCain saw. He looked genuinely surprised when he asked 'What is Obama?' and one crowd member loudly yelled 'A TERRORIST!'

For some odd reason I had a vision today of McCain sitting in his hotel room playing the chorus of Johnny Cash's 'Hurt'.

"What have I become... my sweetest friend
Everyone I know... goes away... in the end
And you could have it all... my empire of dirt
I will let you down... I will make you hurt...

If I could start again... a million miles away
I would keep myself. I would find a way."

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:58 PM on 11/05/2008

It sounds plausible. Palin was a rogue spewing out this venom and inciting the hate and anger in the base during her rallies. McCain was slow catching on to what was going on at her rallies because he was kept in the dark (he was probably talking at another rally while she was at one and so he was not watching the live feeds, his aides did not tell him either). Maybe that is why he seemed so angry all the time towards the end - the tone of the campaign had slipped out of his control, it was too late to turn it around without being perceived as in disarray - and so he played along as best he could but was clearly not comfortable and felt trapped....by a rogue VP pick he regretted.

I imagine you all know the stuff that's out there. Truly despicable stuff. A co-worker just passed me a text message about an Obama christmas tree ornament--you know, "hanging from a tree"???

And the one about what bill will Obama be on? The food stamp? I don't say this to disgust you--it disgusts me. I say it to spread the word that this isn't to be tolerated on any level. emails need to be sent back with your full opinion on them. If you see it in person you need to be very vocal.

This is going to haunt us for the next 8 years if we don't put a quick stop to it. There is absolutely nothing funny about it, but it is really pathetic and tragic that this is what is coming out--really puts the right face on the people doing it, but they need to get over it and change right now, and nothing will do that faster than total ostracism.

It's good that it's out in the open, though. This kind of thing has been going on for decades and decades against anyone who doesn't fit in the Typical box.

I'm just sorry that some, who had never experienced this kind of thing, are experiencing it now. Then again, it could be a good thing because perhaps it'll at least give some an insight into what's been like for some people.

Now, if only men could see what it's been like for women. Such as making them experience a monthly health issue for some months. After that, they'll never complain about us being moody once a month again. Hahaha.

Sarah Palin. The horror. The horror. There are many people out in the world who feel that McCain is an honorable man. Perhaps due to his time as a "P.O.W." (I'd call it imprisonment as a war criminal - though I'd decry as useless and unethical any personal inhumane treatment he may have suffered). But how does an honorable man offer up nonsense as a continuation of what he believes?

And I should have stated that whatever maltreatment he suffered, I can well understand why his captors (after his bailout) mistreated him. It seems unlikely that he thought his ideas through. Only a mercenary defined by his class. Cavalier death from above. If the Vietnamese feel he's paid his price I'll endeavor to agree with them. But we'll argue.

Palin was so accustomed to being top dog in Alaska and apparently acted she still was in the campaign. Not being informed must've been a real pisser. Wonder if she ever knew how much McCain was left in the dark. I also wonder what she'll have to say to her witch hunter who was supposed to make sure she won this gig. Will she blast him and send his sorry self back to Africa or would she be afraid of what he might do to her?

I am waiting for it to come out much more in the open what a traitor she is, after all those accusations she slung at Obama. Close association with the party advocating secession from the Union, close association with Muthee and his Christian Nationalism advocating purging the country of all humanists who dare believe they are in charge of their own destiny and who don't believe the right way.

Palin's ignorance continues to astonish me. She didn't know Africa is a continent? No wonder she didn't know how much she doesn't know. She has no knowledge base to even start thinking about that. Five colleges in 6 years to finally get her B.A. in journalism and it shows. How did she get in college? No. How did she graduate from high school?

I don't know, that whole story of the computer systems' "foreign invasion" sounds way too suspect. First of all, its not as if either candidate would have national security secrets stored in their campaign computer system! What kind of "secrets" could either Russia or China benefit from hacking campaign computer systems?
How is it that the White House knew BEFORE either campaign that their computer systems had been invaded by "foreign ivaders"? That makes absolutely no sense. What does make sense is that Bush sent the FBI to plant a bug in Obama's system--since we all know Bush likes to invade everyone's privacy, read our emails and listen to our conversations---and just so there wouldn't be any suspicion, they cooked up the story that both campaigns had been "invaded by the foreingers". That would make more sense to me, especially since we know that the Republicans stopped at nothing to win--fortunately, the Obama campaign was smarter than them.

Hackers always have the advantage. They get to pick the time, the place, and the specific vulnerability of the system to attack. All you can do is to try to cover as much of the system as you can, which is pretty hard to do considering that the most popular operating systems have a lot of vulnerabilities in them.

Compared to the lower 48, Alaska in many ways was much easier to govern. Budget surplus of $5 billion. Windfall profits on big oil and Palin used that to give good checks to every citizen, heya, nice way to buy good approval ratings and she herself called this a form of socialism. Small population, about 680,000, less than many cities, no state income tax to deal with. High crime rate, especially against women but Palin didn't bother herself about that.

With the price of oil falling and their economy not so hot, she won't have such an easy time of it for the rest of her term. Now Alaska and the rest of us get to see how she deals with real problems besides corruption. She knows less about economics than McCain does. Ignorant Palin and hubby canceled a lot of budget items that turned out to be important, egg on their faces. I doubt she'll have any luck getting her customary earmarks now. Her approval rating had already dropped 20 points, be interesting to see if it keeps dropping over the next two years. hmmmm, maybe she'd rather have her own tv talk show and leave politics. She may be a natural politician but she's too danged ignorant and she doesn't know squat about governance. My way or the highway doesn't work well, even tho the current administration does its best to use it and chips away at the Constitution and the welfare of the country in the process.
