Palin

From Newsweek's Special Election Project comes the real Sarah Palin. She met staff members in a towel:

At the GOP convention in St. Paul, Palin was completely unfazed by the boys' club fraternity she had just joined. One night, Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter went to her hotel room to brief her. After a minute, Palin sailed into the room wearing nothing but a towel, with another on her wet hair. She told them to chat with her laconic husband, Todd. "I'll be just a minute," she said.

She raised William Ayers before the campaign signed off on it:

Palin launched her attack on Obama's association with William Ayers, the former Weather Underground bomber, before the campaign had finalized a plan to raise the issue. McCain's advisers were working on a strategy that they hoped to unveil the following week, but McCain had not signed off on it, and top adviser Mark Salter was resisting.

And she spent far more on clothes than was reported:

NEWSWEEK has also learned that Palin's shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family--clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent "tens of thousands" more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

Finally, Steve Schmidt (who reportedly picked Palin as VP) would not let her speak on election night.

McCain himself rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign, and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended. Palin asked to speak along with McCain at his Arizona concession speech Tuesday night, but campaign strategist Steve Schmidt vetoed the request.

Hey everybody -- Sarah Palin isn't news anymore! She won't be a heartbeat away from the presidency for another 8 years! Congratulations to the human race!

So let's celebrate by not featuring or reading news stories of her. We can even write more smutty articles about Britney Spears, or Lindsay Lohan. It's time to separate politics and entertainment again.

In only a towel or in a bathrobe? Not to defend the lady, but there's a big difference. Other reports have said it was a bathrobe. And knowing the class of hotel she was staying in, no doubt it was a big fluffy bathrobe that would quite honestly not be in the least provocative or inappropriate.

There are plenty of things to honestly criticize about Palin, but to imply that she came out like some bombshell movie actress of the 1950s, wrapped on in a skimpy bath towel, sounds more like a male right wing fantasy than anything true.

But, if if WAS a towel, then that's just plain creepy and inappropriate. Doubt it, though.

oh, she's creepy & inappropriate alright, towel or no.

John McCain come out and explain your pick. Didn't you once say you were soul mates and you consult her on foreign policies. You had to know about this. Come out of hiding and explain.

Turn on the TV or talk radio in the days following this election and it is almost unavoidable to see how the Republican party has run itself into the ground.

McCain supporters and campaign insiders are running off a laundry list of how Sarah Palin was everything from a "diva" to a "Hillbilly" in the hope that they will be forgiven their part in the drama they willfully accepted. They offer Palin as the sacrificial lamb to the press only to avoid getting their own asses chewed out of political existence.

For decades, the Republican party has played the fear card to further it's agenda, but now that same tactic has come home to roost. They went once too often into their "cookie jar of fear" when the people were going hungry.

Palin exemplifies their inability to hear what the citizenry was looking for. Thought before speech, reason over decision, hope before fear, civility over condemnation, genuine opportunity in the place of wholesale conformity.

The Republicans may learn someday that fear has never motivated anyone to do little more than stand in line. In a nation that supports freedom, they have always been the first to demand wholesale submission, even in the Sarah Palin debacle. She was never treated as anything more than a trophy, and now, in their own inability to understand themselves, they can only tarnish her further to make themselves appear better.

It isn't working.

I can only imagine what she might have said in a concession speech. McCain's speech was extremely gracious, but I can't believe Sarah could have come off as anything but the Attack Dog she was throughout the campaign. Good move Steve Schmidt...we didn't need to hear from her!

I dont' really care about the towel. Heck, I've greeted the mail man wearing a jock strap.

but I DO care about how many more dangerous things were hidden from Americans like her not knowing the three countries in North America (four if her husband had his way) and not knowing that Africa was a continent.

I DO care that she blathered on about how good she was at saving money and cutting costs but then spend more than my family makes in a year buying clothes for the kids. Yeah, SHE had to look good (she wasn't hired for her brains after all) but why did Bristol and Trig need DKNY?

She had prepared two speeches Tuesday nite in Phoenix, the first is a victory address (how in hell did she ever give that a chance?!), the other a concession speech.

Like her rally with The (wrong) View lady - Hasselbeck in Florida days ago, I think her concession speech was really gonna be her "CLOTHING ARGUMENT". Thank God, McCain's aides said NO, no, no - there would never be a VP speech, only McCain.

Gotta love it.

Even when the bastion of conservative "news" tells people it's from the staff themselves these so-called Republicans just claim foul and insist that it had to be Obama-supporters.

Clearly it's just one big anti-Republican conspiracy [wink]...

Look's like McCain may have picked someone just like him to be his running mate after all. Both of them would have done ANYTHING to WIN.

This just won't stop will it? I bet future campaigns that fail will be called Palinized. I really can't believe this woman was chosen by the GOP to be the #2 on the ticket. It will forever boggle my mind. But wait, Obama won. I guess I shouldn't care that much then :)

I heard that a Obama staffer witnessed Biden shooting botox into his forehead.

That's what they said so it must be true.

It seems that there are a lot of board Republican Palin lovers writing comments today. Geessh! It amazes me how people can just cover their eyes, ignore her ignorance and her actions and defend the same.

Then why do so many Obama supporters spend endless hours trashing her? Seems someone is awfully obsessed by her, kind of like all those who went on and on and on and on about Hillary forever during the primaries, sounding like Lucianne Goldberg circa 1997.

I think there are a few reasons beyond the unfairly greater focus on women candidates' appearance , clothing etc.

A combination of
A) horrified fascination , starting with her interviews, that such a stunningly ignorant and vapid person (of EITHER gender) could have been chosen by a major party as qualified to step into the presidency ......

B) it is human nature to like seeing hypocrites exposed. in this case someone who presents herself as being just regular folks, and against big spending, then turns out to have maybe run up close to 200K in designer duds. Not too many regular folks have their little kids carrying expensive Louis Vuitton bags around.

C) the whole soap opera Republican in-fighting aspect which is as entertaining to Democrats as the Dems attacking each other all spring was to Republicans.

D) And a BIG part is how nasty she was in campaigning with her "He's not like us" & "palling around with terrorists" rhetoric meant to spread fear and hate and division to gain some votes....during which period the threats against Obama's security went up. That doesnt prove causality but it is certainly possible.

I really think if it were not for "D", more people on the left might have some sympathy for her.

I'm not saying people SHOULD be obsessed with her. And I think we should take some of these unattributed stories with a grain of salt. Anyway we have a lot more important things to deal with.

"Then why do so many Obama supporters spend endless hours trashing her?"

Because she is clear and present danger to the ideals of this country and now, even the Republican Party who chose her according to recent disclosures.

UWNBM- What? I'm not trashing Palin. You haven't seen me say an just to ything just to be cruel.

But yes, since she first opened her mouth (when McCain introduced her as his running mate) and the lies started pouring out, I've made a serious effort on this board and others to point out her lies, her ignorance, her hypocricy and how completely unprepared she is for the office she sought.

I bet she looked really good in just a towel! At the same time how is this news?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:00 AM on 11/07/2008

It is news because it speaks to the professionalism and judgment of the person who was close ( well not that close) to becoming the next VP. The spending spree underscores the fact that while she was with one face calling out Obama as an elitist, she was spending hundreds of thousands of dollars that contributors gave on high end clothing. Juxtaposition this against the pictures of Obama that were going around, one of him asleep with his feet up on the desk with holes worn in the bottom of his shoes. And she wanted to talk about the "real America". I hope this helps wake some people up to the fact that shared political idiology does not equal shared values.

"At the same time how is this news?"

Their are levels of professionalism in the matter, but also an underlying hypocrisy.

People of deep faith find fault with this kind of behavior and Palin was more than ready to position herself as a voice the Evangelical dogma. It's not so much what what she was wearing, but the absence of prudence according to that same dogma.
