CNN:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will likely meet later this week with Joe Lieberman to discuss whether the Democrat-turned-Independent will be stripped of his Senate committee chairmanship, a senior Democratic leadership aide tells CNN.

Lieberman currently chairs the Senate's Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

This aide says that Reid, who is calling the meeting, has not yet decided what to do. The aide admits that the decision will be determined in part by the final election results -- and just how close the party is to a filibuster-proof 60-seat majority -- but insists that the biggest factor involved is lingering anger among Senate Democrats over Lieberman's Republican convention speech.

LOL. Let the bipartisanship begin! Reach across the aisle? The Dems can't even reach out to an Independent (without a kn-ife in their hands that is).

How appropriate to call yourself Ayn Rand.......but do not preach to us about consequences for betraying your political party.....Republicans are expert at that exercise.

If Reid doesn't strip Lieberman, the Reid must relinquish his own leadership position.

Why don't they strip Reid first, and then let the new person strip Lieberman? I can live with Pelosi, but Reid needs to go.

I totally agree. A good place for Hillary to step into but I think she's serious about staying in the Senate.

Filibuster proof majority or not, Lieberman has to be booted to the back benches with no discernable power. Otherwise, he will scheme and dissemble for his own political survival like he always has.

Harry Reid may be relied upon to do exactly the wrong thing at exactly the wrong time.

Good. If Al Franken manages to pull of a win, Lieberman should be out the door. I wonder in utter disbelief how Connecticut re-elected him.

A smirking comedian excites you, but a statesman like Lieberman has to go? Good grief!

Joe Schmo even started using the Limbore abbreviation "the Democrat party".

Make him ambassador to Mongolia.

It's satisfying to know that Joe tied himself to the front of the derailed Straight Talk Express.

The Oregonian has declared a winner in the U.S. Senate election: Your new Senator-elect is Jeff Merkley.

The latest numbers - both here at BlueOregon and at the Oregonian:

691,501 Jeff Merkley
691,119 Gordon Smith
79,004 David Brownlow

Happy about the result, but I don't think Smith was the worst person in the senate, and I'm a little
saddened by seeing republican moderates, like Smith and Shays go down in defeat, while right
wing trolls still stay in power. In only argues for the continuation of a schism between the right
and the left.

The only time Smith was remotely moderate was in the several months prior to elections. Then, abra-kadabra, he was more of a Democrat than FDR. You are drastically mistaken about him. Check out Merkley and his history and you will find a true social progressive Democrat.

Dump him. Let him see how it feels to be truly "independent".

Apparently Joe Lieberman believed that McCain was the best candidate. I have no problem with him supporting John McCain or participating in the RNC, but turning on the people, including Obama, who befriended him during a very difficult re-election campaign says a lot about Lieberman's character (or lack thereof).

Whether Lieberman had ulterior motives -- hopes of being selected as VP or given a prominent position in McCain's cabinet -- is something only he knows. Nevertheless he should have taken the high road, but didn't. Instead of strictly expressing why he supported McCain, he chose to denigrate, devalue and personally attack Obama's character.

That kind of behaviour is not worthy of prominence and should not be rewarded as such.
