CNN:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will likely meet later this week with Joe Lieberman to discuss whether the Democrat-turned-Independent will be stripped of his Senate committee chairmanship, a senior Democratic leadership aide tells CNN.

Lieberman currently chairs the Senate's Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

This aide says that Reid, who is calling the meeting, has not yet decided what to do. The aide admits that the decision will be determined in part by the final election results -- and just how close the party is to a filibuster-proof 60-seat majority -- but insists that the biggest factor involved is lingering anger among Senate Democrats over Lieberman's Republican convention speech.

What is Reid thinking? You can't buy off Liebermann. That dog has no loyalty to anyone beside himself-- at any price. He'll turn on you in a heartbeat.

As any chances of a filibuster-proof majority slip away, expect Lieberman to pay his political costs sooner, rather than later. It's going to be a very long and cold winter for Judas Joe.

Committee posts are supposed to be honors bestowed on the party's best and brightest, the ones who not only most accurately reflect the goals and values of the party platform, but the ones who consistently work to improve the party brand and deliver votes by piloting legislation through committees and into law.

Why would we want to retain a guy in a valuable committee post when it's become clear that he does not reflect our values, does not want to deliver votes and does not want to pilot legislation that reflects our platform?

Out! Out! Out!

And if he throws a tantrum and joins the GOP in retaliation, so be it. We don't have the 60 anyway, so his defection won't matter much.

I'd like to get rid of Harry Reid as Senate Majority Leader first, then let the new SML strip Lieberman of ALL of his committee chairs.

If they're not going to be in the cabinet, Hillary or Jim Webb should be SML...

And I'd rather see Rahm Emmanuel as Speaker of the House, with Daschle as Chief of Staff.

Best point made.

I agree on Reid and Pelosi. They may have "earned" the position by time served, but this congress is going to need courage and action instead of the dithering that they have exhibited.

I would love to see Hillary running the Senate. She has the influence to persuade and the b---s to push. It looks like Emanuel is going to the White House so he's not available. Who else in the House could do the job as well?

Hit the road Joe! We got a new top Jew in Washington to be our role model!
First in the staff: Rahm Emanuel!!! YAY!!!!

Thanks for the support:

Much of the blame for the Lieberman fiasco lies with Bill Clinton and Barbara Boxer. During the 2006 Democratic primaries, they campaigned in Connecticut for Lieberman against Ned Lamont, without any assurances that Lieberman would honor the party's endorsement process. Then after the primaries, Clinton and Boxer never returned to Connecticut to undo the damage they created. This legitimized Lieberman's independent bid with some Connecticut Democrats, and their votes combined with Republicans to re-elect Lieberman. Clinton and Boxer never should have campaigned for Lieberman, and they should have done everything in their power to help Ned Lamont once Lieberman thumbed his nose at the decision of his state's Democratic voters.

But didn't Barack campaign for him and look what he did to him?

I sincerely believe that Lieberman is a national security risk and should not chair any committee that requires national security clearance.

Better yet don't give him anything. He has already chosen his side. Let him go beg to the Republicans for his committee assignments.

Although Fox may be trumpeting an agenda, MSNBC has adopted an even more partisan line that is just as toxic.

Nope. Check again. About one half of MSNBC anchors and pundits lean right and the other half, like Olberman and Maddow lean left. Your problem is that huge hunk of cement between your ears that has been programmed to consume mass quantities of rightwing koolaid. Expand your mind.

Today I went on the Fox website to see what they were saying---OMG, it's a parallel universe where Fundamental Wingnuts think they are centrists and that Moderate Democrats are Communists and Baby Killers. Scary people--scary opinions. Then there are the others who call the wingnuts not-so-nice names and go off on their own tangents --war, etc. I guess everyone needs to find a home, but please don't compare them to MSNBC viewers.

I love MSNBC, but it's because I love to hear both sides argued intelligently. That's what you get, with a little humor and a good bit of partisanship on both (or several) sides. You can't call Mike Murphy, Joe Scarborough, Pat Buchanan, Peggy Noonan left wing. It isn't bland equivalency tit for tat TV like most of the networks deliver. But it definitely isn't the equivalent of the right wing ranters 24/7 on Fox who make up stories as they go along to blatently appeal to only one segment of the public.

It's not necessary to be spiteful and toss him out of the caucus entirely...but he should lose the committee chairmanship as a lesson to others at least. Lieberman's real punishment is going to be his reputation in history as a total fink and the fact that nobody who works with him can feel as though they can expect his loyalty.

I disagree. Lieberman chose his side the day he decided to speak at the Republican convention. He played his political cards and threw his lot in with the Republicans in expectations of great rewards. You can't expect him not to pay a high price now. Does the Senate Democratic Party caucus really need a Judas neocon? I think not. He should be marginalized by the Democrats as much as is politically possible.
