WASHINGTON -- An emotional Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice reveled Wednesday in Barack Obama's election, calling it an "extraordinary step forward" for the nation.

A child of the segregated deep South who became the highest-ranking African-American woman ever in American government and was once considered a potential Republican presidential nominee, Rice called the Democratic president-elect "inspirational" and said his victory was proof of America's promise.

"This was an exercise in American democracy of which Americans across the political spectrum are justifiably proud," she said.

"As an African-American, I'm especially proud," said Rice, her eyes glistening with emotion, "because this is a country that's been through a long journey, in terms of overcoming wounds and making race" less of a factor in life. "That work is not done, but yesterday was obviously an extraordinary step forward."

"One of the great things about representing this country is that it continues to surprise," she told reporters at the State Department at a hastily arranged briefing just hours before leaving Washington for the Middle East on a peacemaking trip. "It continues to renew itself. It continues to beat all odds and expectations."

Born and raised in Birmingham, Ala., at the height of the civil rights struggle, Rice herself overcame numerous obstacles and stereotypical low expectations. She speaks frequently about how improbable her rise to the corridors of power may seem. But she also notes that she succeeded the first black secretary of state, Colin Powell, and the first female to hold the job, Madeleine Albright.

"You just know that Americans are not going to be satisfied until they really do form that perfect union," she said, referring to the preamble of the Constitution, which begins: "We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union ..."

"And while the perfect union may never be in sight, we just keep working at it and trying," Rice said.

Aides said Rice would likely call Obama, as well as vanquished Republican presidential nominee John McCain, later Wednesday.

She said McCain had been "gracious" in defeat and called him "a great patriot."

"I want to note that President-elect Obama was inspirational and I'm certain he will continue to be," Rice said.

She never said who she planned to vote for, but had hinted broadly that she would support McCain by repeatedly stressing that she is a Republican.

She wasn't the first African American Secretary of State.
She wasn't the first woman Secretary of State.

But, she's the first gay Secretary of State.

It's sad to watch the slimebags like Sean I'm-A-Christian Hannity and Rush Limbaugh who today, instead of at least acknowledging the giant step forward that their country took last night, continue to harp their shrill divisive hate rhetoric. Like stray sheep, they will soon find themselves without a herd to protect them.

This is mushroom cloud, smoking gun, lying before Congress about her complicity in 9/11 Congoleeza Rice? We trust her tears? Let her cry for the thousands of innocent dead that she is directly responsible for.

There are no war heroes, only war criminals. War is organized mass murder, and Bush's house negroes have no right to try to redeem themselves with the sweat and blood and magic of the Obama phenomenon.

McCain betrayed the Naval Academy code of conduct, his first wife, the POW code of conduct, this country, as did Bush, and so did Congoleeza.

lt makes me want to puke to read all these comments that treat her like some kind of sensitive human being. She never suffered; she used. See if you can find her dissertation. See if you can see the callouses on her knees. See if you can figure out how she violated the wonderful intent of affirmative action.

You all say you love Obama.........did anyone listen to his speech last night? Do you think he would be happy with what is being said here? I tend to think he would be sickened.

Thank you; good point Marilynleigh34. Let's not drag everything backward. When we descend into vindictiveness, we are the same as those we claim to be aghast at.
Let's all try to grow beyond that. Hmm?

I swear I've never seen Rice smile... ever. And she was BEAMING. GLOWING.

Its strange. It really changes my opinion of her. Not completely obviously.

Secretary Rice,

I don't much care for you but it was very classy of you to say that. I'll give credit where it's due.

No credit is due to a lying shill for the worst President of the modern era. I'd say she's potentially complicit in war crimes, but they probably can't be proven.

war crimes - international courts, things could get busy.

Crying because she's going to be out of a job ...
The way she delivered that speech is the same way I deliver a speech
"issued" by my company when we are forced to to cut back on something ...

The directive would usually be "try and make it heart-felt and caring"

That is literally the only time I have ever seen Condi Rice when she was not lying.

Sketchartist, I found myself bursting into laughter at your comment. I guess she had to play the game while working for Bush.

Congoleeza Rice is one of the worst souls in the Bush administration. She never suffered in Birmingham, nor did her parents. They were privileged academics. She, like Palin, has made a career4 out of phony pretense. The difference is that she is responsible for the murder of thousands of humans while Palin is responsible for the murder of hundreds of animals.

I just want to puke when I read the ignorance displayed here. Read what Jesus said about hypocrites:
They are like unto whited sepulchres, that are outwardly comely but inwardly are full of dead men's bones."

Don't any of you Christians read what Jesus said to you?

Why dont you try reading Psalm 139.

migulobrien, you nor anyone but Jesus knows the heart of another. I read the bible every day and I have not read in it where Jesus has given us permission to judge another person's soul. I heard today that Ms. Rice's father tried to register as a Democrat and was turned down; however, he was allowed to register as a Rebublican. They lived with the pain of rejection; Birmingham was not the only place of suffering for blacks.

Who cares?? THEY do. HER party, the Republicans.
THEY care about what people do in their private lives.
The ones who want "less government" -- which apparently is a euphemism for "less taxes" -- because they CERTAINLY want more government in our bedrooms.

"And while the perfect union may never be in sight, we just keep working at it and trying," Rice said.
That quotation from Rice tells much about the two-faced GOP scramble for political cover. Ms. Rice just spent the past few years spewing lies and propaganda while "working at and trying" to aid and abet the most divisive administration in memory and now she thinks Obama's election is cool.
Ms. Rice, your actions tell us your words are lies.
This is more evidence the rats in the sinking ship are all seeking flotsam to alight upon. When we see true acts of contrition (and importantly, confessions of their misdeeds) for the injuries they have foisted upon the people of the world, then maybe we'll believe this sudden bi-partisan kindness is real.

Yessir, all the wingnuts and their trolls scuttling around, same as ever, working towards Distopia.

Concerning your particular noise, the linkage of the terms "Smart" and "Sarah" is laughable, and "Condi" - merely a clever and shrewd phony (the erstwhile CCCP scholar who never even learned Russian) - has earned in full measure the indelible stain of blood on her claws.
