Expressing deep satisfaction -- almost relief -- with the election of Barack Obama yesterday, Robert Kennedy Jr., the longtime environmental activist and member of the Democratic Party's most cherished family, said he would serve the next president if asked.

"You know what, I would be of service in any way that the administration asked me to be," Kennedy told the Huffington Post. "But I am also very happy and I believe I am being effective doing the stuff I am doing currently."

On Wednesday, Politico reported that Obama was strongly considering putting Kennedy at the head of the Environmental Protection Agency. The appointment would represent a major and early victory for environmentalists and would undoubtedly please Kennedy's cousin, Caroline Kennedy and uncle, Sen. Ted Kennedy - who was an instrumental Obama backer during the primary and is in poor health.

Robert Kennedy downplayed the idea of any imminent announcement, saying,
"I haven't had that discussion with anyone in my family about" joining the Obama administration.

And yet he did not hide his pleasure with the election of the Illinois Democrat. Saying it would be great "just to have a President who can give a speech and who can write," Kennedy compared the sensation of Tuesday night to the "kind of feeling that the French had and the Belgium and the Scandinavians had when Europe was liberated."

Kennedy, who works as an attorney and officer for the environmental group Riverkeeper, said he saw in Obama's ascension to the presidency many of the political traits that defined his uncle and father's runs at the office.

"His disposition is very much like my uncle," he said, referencing President John Kennedy. "The intellectual passion and the coolness and the dry humor. And I think his obsession and his preoccupation with justice, and including all of the different members of our society -- he just understands that we have to go forward as a community... The extraordinary demonstrations on election night and through this morning, with young people, we didn't even see that magnitude of demonstration in 1960 when my uncle was elected."

Much of Kennedy's excitement, however, is linked not to the similarities between Obama and his family members but rather to the overhaul of the environmental agenda that the president-elect has planned.

"I think that Barack Obama understands that energy must be the centerpiece for his administration. That there really are two big issues, one is health care and the other is energy," he said. "And energy is intertwined with all other issues. If we can get off of foreign oil, for instance, we can save 700 billion a year. We can pay back the Wall Street debt we just ran up in just one year."

"That whole dark cloud of the Bush administration," he added, "has all the sudden been lifted."

JFK Jr. is the kind of appointment the voting majority who worked for, contributed to and elected Obama want to see.
03:05 PM on 11/08/2008
I donated $$$$, I called THOUSANDS while working at my desk, I walked Northern Virginia on weekends. I did all this to return TRUTH and JUSTICE to America. I did NOT do this to replace one kind of SICKNESS in government with ANOTHER ...

Obama and his staff are TOP NOTCH. Unlike McCain, they will VET their people well ... there is NO WAY RFKjr will pass this vetting process ...
01:16 AM on 11/11/2008
I second that. I sure don't want to see a bunch of Bushies staying in their posts so Obama can work the "center." I've not been working so hard to see more minor BS changes that end up really changing nothing. I for one think RFK is the perfect candidate for the EPA.

Sorry, but the man in thrall to all manner of pseudoscience. He's taken to bouts of spouting antivaccination nonsense and seeing conspiracies everywhere. Please Mr. President elect, rationality and scientific rigor must rule your environmental policies. It would be horrible to go from the Bush administration's far-right superstition to equally dubious far-left woo. The planet needs help, not hype.

I am a health care provider. Anti-vaccine nonsense has many proponents. It's opponents often have something to lose (especially if cases end up in the court system). There ARE conspiracies everywhere. We need a visionary. Hopefully Barack Obama will be the visionary that chooses RFK for the EPA - Our world cannot wait!

"Anti-vaccine nonsense has many proponents"

I'm sure. So does BIG FOOT, UFOs/alien abduction, Scientology, etc. You are in "good" company.

"There ARE conspiracies everywhere"

You CAN get treatment for this. I suggest you see a mental health provider ASAP.

"I am a health care provider"

Oh really, yet you seem to be a follower of wing-nuts that threaten to push the state of health of our children back 100 years or more ... you should be ASHAMED of yourself ...

AP has published a story "Names surface for top Obama administration jobs" and RFK is NOT on the EPA list. This would be a terrible mistake if RFK doesn't get it.

On Ring of Fire, RFK said things about Rahm and I'm 80% sure they were bad. Ring of Fire has changed /removed their Archives so I can't find them. I'm 100% sure RFK talked about Rahm and I'm 80% it was bad. But you know Bobby, he goes after everyone who does something wrong.

Bobby would be a better AG than the EPA Administrator!! Man, he kicks ass and put names in jail! Karl Rove, Elliott Abrams, Powell, Douglas Fife, Cheney, Bush, Alberto R. Gonzales, Harriot Myers, Tom Delay, Bill Frist.... they all will be going to prison if Bobby is the AG.

It shouldn't be surprising to anyone that the industrial right is going to wage a serious campaign of to keep Robert F. Kennedy Jr. out of the position as being EPA's chief administrator- and yes of course that means getting onto progressive blogs and trying to spread mis-information. Kennedy is without a doubt the strongest environmental advocate being considered for the EPA post and would be our best chance for reversing years of Bush administration policies hostile to the environment.
10:24 AM on 11/09/2008
RFK jr understands ecological principles as well as anyone who might be advising Obama. He seems likely not to be suited for a bureaucratic office job but if he were Obama's first advisor on environmental issues it would be about as good as we could hope for.
12:39 PM on 11/09/2008
" ... if he were Obama's first advisor on environmental issues it would be about as good as we could hope for"

IF you believe this, then you Hoosierone are an extreme pessimist. I believe/hope that we can do MUCH better ...

IF for some reason RFKjr MUST be appointed to SOMETHING, then put him on a panel where he would be vastly outnumbered by a large number of scientist and/or followers of science ... in that way you can HAVE your Kennedy and ignore him too ...

This possible pick sounds too emotionally laden in the past and too professionally controversial in the present.
10:57 AM on 11/07/2008
He would be wonderful! He could undo so much that has been done to satisfy big oil, timber, ATV riders etc to the detriment of our earth.
07:45 PM on 11/07/2008
I second that.
02:46 AM on 11/07/2008
Great choice if selected.

Obama is really sending a message: only competent and intelligent individuals in this administration.

Only been a few days since the election and I am already feeling the CHANGE! Can you?
11:35 PM on 11/06/2008
If asked I would serve too.
08:49 PM on 11/06/2008
An EPA Secretary that actually cares for the environment, have we gone through the looking glass?

truth_seeker:

What do you mean when you say that RFK Jr. doesn't trust science? My understanding is that he founded a science-based NGO (WaterKeeper) and works for two other science-based NGOs (Riverkeeper and NRDC).

Just curious what your examples of his using "dogma over science" are...
07:01 PM on 11/06/2008
Here is a VERY offensive article written by RFKjr (I will ALWAYS put the "jr" after RFK because I loved his father ... he is NOTHING like his father)

http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/2005/06/16/thimerosal/index.html

Here is a (of MANY) critique ...

http://skeptico.blogs.com/skeptico/2005/06/robert_f_kenned.html

This is just ONE example ... he has NO ethics at all ...
02:16 PM on 11/06/2008
I just called my two senators to urge them to BLOCK any attempt to appoint RFKjr to head the EPA. We have just been through 8 years of political appointees pursuing DOGMA over SCIENCE, we do NOT need any more. RFKjr is a conspiracy theorist, he does NOT trust SCIENCE. ENOUGH!!! NO MORE BUSH STYLE POLITICS. We live in a high tech world, IF someone does not believe/trust science then they DO NOT BELONG IN GOVERNMENT.

I strongly urge other scientist to CALL, YOUR SENATORS tell them WHO YOU ARE and WHAT YOU DO and explain why such people should NOT be appointed to lead ANY branch of government that deals with science.
02:35 PM on 11/06/2008
Totally agree. After his vaccine scaremongering Kennedy has zero credibilty in the scientific community. Obama needs the scientists on board to challenge the problems America and the world faces. They have been overwhelmingly in support of him. The one thing he could do to offend scientists more would be to appoint a creationist to be in charge of education. We need to be able to trust government with the facts. It's the only thing people can agree on and builld a consensus on.

It's not backwards or reverse day. RFKJR's ideas are based in science. The Republicans are the group that has fought science and insisted that climate change is "nonsense"; they are the ones in bed with the oil companies and coal companies. When you submit stuff like this, please remember that most posters on this site are very aware and we don't take well to talking points and "dogma" If you believe RFK Jr is pursuing dogma, site some examples. And as far as a "political appointee", I don't think you can count appointing someone who has dedicated his life to environmental issues a "political appointee" - you may be confused with Bush who appointed Brown as head of FEMA based on his experience as an attorney for some horse association...so if you want to compare political appointees - we can do that...
07:29 PM on 11/06/2008
lmrgreen, my aren't YOU naive. Do you REALLY think that the political RIGHT has some kind of monopoly on ignoring science?? Do you REALLY think zealots ONLY exist on the RIGHT? I will admit that during my career MOST of the problems HAVE come from the RIGHT ... BUT NOT ALL ...

“There’s no such thing as Republican children and Democratic children. The worst thing we could do for the environment is allow it to become the province of a particular party.”

This appointment will send a huge message to the rest of the world about how serious we are about global warming. Bobby will kick the corporations out of regulatory positions and has the capacity to change the US paradigm on environmental policy. This is awesome

I just hope Mike Papantonio will be his #2!!!!!

I must strongly question the logic behind Robert Kennedy as a possible choice for heading up the EPA. On the surface he is a noted environmentalist and I understand his name brings notoriety to the cause, but there are many in the environmental community who feel he is nothing but an opportunist and charlatan. There is a reason the NRDC kicked him out of their organization. There is a reason why many people left the Hudson Riverkeeper when he hired a scientist and convicted felon who peddled in endangered species. Look more closely at his record - his actions are based more on the opportunity to raise money and make a name for himself than on sound science or environmental policy. We can do much better.
03:53 PM on 11/06/2008
I'm in the "environmental community" and you are just grinding an ax for your own personal agenda. You are spouting off ancient news. Sounds like sour grapes to me. He still is strongly affiliated with Hudson Riverkeeper, and has taken the Waterkeeper Alliance to new levels. He is a man and a man makes mistakes...some in his past and maybe some in his actions, but he has more heart and passion about the environment than anyone I know. You wonder why the public doesn't take you seriously? It is because you can't even get along with each other. The day environmentalists stop beating each other up, maybe you can find the way to beat yourself out of a paperbag
05:14 PM on 11/06/2008
Thanks for clearing that up for me, I didn't realize I had an agenda besides environmental protection and scientific objectivity. That's good to know. Those of us that have had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with him can tell you what a lunatic he really is. Passion is good, an understanding and appreciation of the science behind good environmental policy is better, especially for the most important environmental job in the world.

This is a great choice. Someone who actually knows and cares about the enviroment in charge of it.

I support this choice... RFK Jr. 2016!
