Expressing deep satisfaction -- almost relief -- with the election of Barack Obama yesterday, Robert Kennedy Jr., the longtime environmental activist and member of the Democratic Party's most cherished family, said he would serve the next president if asked.

"You know what, I would be of service in any way that the administration asked me to be," Kennedy told the Huffington Post. "But I am also very happy and I believe I am being effective doing the stuff I am doing currently."

On Wednesday, Politico reported that Obama was strongly considering putting Kennedy at the head of the Environmental Protection Agency. The appointment would represent a major and early victory for environmentalists and would undoubtedly please Kennedy's cousin, Caroline Kennedy and uncle, Sen. Ted Kennedy - who was an instrumental Obama backer during the primary and is in poor health.

Robert Kennedy downplayed the idea of any imminent announcement, saying,
"I haven't had that discussion with anyone in my family about" joining the Obama administration.

And yet he did not hide his pleasure with the election of the Illinois Democrat. Saying it would be great "just to have a President who can give a speech and who can write," Kennedy compared the sensation of Tuesday night to the "kind of feeling that the French had and the Belgium and the Scandinavians had when Europe was liberated."

Kennedy, who works as an attorney and officer for the environmental group Riverkeeper, said he saw in Obama's ascension to the presidency many of the political traits that defined his uncle and father's runs at the office.

"His disposition is very much like my uncle," he said, referencing President John Kennedy. "The intellectual passion and the coolness and the dry humor. And I think his obsession and his preoccupation with justice, and including all of the different members of our society -- he just understands that we have to go forward as a community... The extraordinary demonstrations on election night and through this morning, with young people, we didn't even see that magnitude of demonstration in 1960 when my uncle was elected."

Much of Kennedy's excitement, however, is linked not to the similarities between Obama and his family members but rather to the overhaul of the environmental agenda that the president-elect has planned.

"I think that Barack Obama understands that energy must be the centerpiece for his administration. That there really are two big issues, one is health care and the other is energy," he said. "And energy is intertwined with all other issues. If we can get off of foreign oil, for instance, we can save 700 billion a year. We can pay back the Wall Street debt we just ran up in just one year."

"That whole dark cloud of the Bush administration," he added, "has all the sudden been lifted."

I think he would be even better than Gore..another good man, but more politically vulnerable.

Couldn't be more in support. In college, I was on RFK's local campaign staff, where I got to know his power and character. I met him the day before he was killed in L.A. If "junior" is 1/3 the man that his father was, the nation will benefit hugely by his being involved in the environmental side of things. I suspect the man is every bit of 75%, without the viscious competitive spirit that made the father the president to be, before the gunfire. Go, Junior, Go!

Junior doesn't think straight - he should not be chosen for a reality-based administration.

In this photo, I see his dad in his face and his uncle in his eyes. He is as passionate as they both were and would be a good fit with this new administration.

RFK Jr. is not in Congress and never has been. Maybe you are thinking of Ted Kennedy's son.

First, Obama gets elected President and now word that RFK Jr. may be head of EPA? I'm not sure how much more good news I can handle at one time! BTW, if anyone here hasn't seen the 3D Imax film, Grand Canyon Adventure, with RFK Jr., I strongly urge you to do so. It's one of the best Imax films I've seen. Also, check out his weekly Ring of Fire radio show with Mike Papantonio on Air America.

OMG! That would be the best decision President Obama could make other than to make him Secretary of the Interior. Robert Kennedy Jr. is to the environment what Al Gore is to global warming. Finally a person that actually cares about the environment instead of letting oilmen, coal and gas CEO's and ranchers decide what's good for the country.

Ring of Fire website was just changed in the last few days. I was going to post a link to two weeks ago show where he interviewed his sister on her new book, Being Catholic Now. It was one of coolest interviews I've ever heard. It looks like all archives have been removed.

A tip! I've listened to RFK for many years on Ring of Fire. He doesn't like coal companies. He doesn't like how they rip up the earth retrieving it. He doesn't like their corruption the way they are in bed with Republican administrations. He doesn't like the poison ejected into the environment.

I'd sell my coal stock and/or buy stock in companies that make coal cleaner. The companies that make equipment to mine coal cleaner than blowing the tops of mountains off.

Just thinking about Bobby as head of EPA has made my day! What a perfect choice. I've heard him speak several times and just sit there in amazement. All the naysayers commenting must be big bad polluters.

Obama might consider creating and appointing to it, a 'citizen environment' cabinet position --- someone who is in touch with Main Street and the people who live there. So far, Congress (and I include Democrats, especially Pelosi and Reid) see more responsive to corporate interests, than they are to citizen interests.

So true. Both Reid and Pelosi have been way too easy on the corporations. I'd like to see them both replaces with more progressive candidates.

I think Mr. Kennedy would be a fantastic choice for EPA, or even Secretary of the Interior.

Totally agree with you. In general, I hope Obama appoints people who truly understand the issues we face, not store front pretty people.

I'd rather have an environmental scientist in charge of the EPA than an activist , bureaucrat or politician.

Appointing Kennedy to the EPA would be a bad move for the EPA and the environment ... I don't care what your ideology ... radical partisan leadership at this level of government always ends badly with many unintended consequences that end up doing more harm than good.

I agree, but the Kennedy's overall have a strong sense of duty to public service; which I think would help him moderate himself if he were to take a more overarching position like head of the EPA. Its one thing to fight the good fight for rivers in NY tooth and nail, its quite another to be responsible for the executive branch's implementation of law. I think that weight of responsibility would moderate him, or so I hope.

"Always" is a terribly self-limiting word. RFK, Jr. has the skills, character, stamina and moral fibre to execute the job well. The man is a Lawya with a panoply of scientists around him. When's the last time you met an engineer or scientist, who could talk their way out of a wet paper bag and be intelligible? NOT.

I don't see how Kennedy is at all, "Radical".
He seems to have always stood for common sense.
As an administrator, he would listen to real scientists, not just those working as lobbists for corporate special interests.

GWB flushed our country down the loo by complacency and sheer incompetence. Now, the Dems will show um how it's done.... oh yeah...it's our birthdays!

This administration is going to be totally methodical, precise, and cool- like the crew of Ocean's Eleven. We WILL be better off 4 years from now...

Please please please pick him! Imagine choosing someone to head the EPA who actually cares about the environment!

RFK Jr can put things back the way they were before Bush changed the laws that protect the environment and public health.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:59 AM on 11/06/2008

Can we please have someone who doesn't twist the facts to fit his ideology or pre-conceived ideas? Scientists like me are fed up with that after 8 years of Bush. Bad start Barack.

Couldn't agree more.

Dr.B

Check out what science-based conservation groups like the American Bird Conservancy have to say about offshore wind energy projects proposed for major bird migration and flight zones. And check out what major mainstream science groups have had to say about the undue, contaminating, and invalidating influence big pharmacy companies have had on medical research.

The proposed Cape Cod wind farm might not be nearly as "extremely green" as you think, nor is Bobby Kennedy's record as partisan or non-science-based as you think.

Take your own advice about doing some research, please.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:29 AM on 11/06/2008

I disagree. I have followed Robert Kennedy Jr. and has more information than anyone should have regarding abuse of our environment. He has been in the trenches fighting to protect the air and water. He as sued companies that have destroyed the mountains and rivers who are breaking the law. Scientists are not going to be able to fight the special interests who have no regard for the future. Do some research.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:56 AM on 11/06/2008

Fighting "special interests" like coalitions blocking extremely green and productive wind farms off of Cape Cod? Do some research.

His record also suggests a limited understanding of scientific method, or a willingness to set that understanding aside when it doesn't fit his preconceptions. We don't need that, however much his agenda may appear to be in sync with ours.

Competence, please.
