Sherri Shepherd broke down in tears on "The View" Wednesday talking about Barack Obama's victory. The mother of a young son with special needs, Sherri related to Sarah Palin and had been openly undecided. But with Obama's victory, she broke down over the historic win of an African American. Speaking of the Civil Rights Movement and the limitations she was told she had had growing up, Sherri said in part, "To look at my baby and go, you don't have to have limitations..." and she broke down in tears.

Sheri is a joke...

Stevie Wonder could see she was playing it up for the cameras... jeez!

I cried too. It wasn't a joke.

Dude. I teared up when he was announced.

I cried during his victory speech. It's not a joke.

And I'm a white guy.

Not only was it a matter of finally coming out of the last 8 years to find an intelligent, emotionally mature, focused President the likes of which America hasn't seen in decades, it IS about race.

There have been 43 Presidents before this one. They've all looked like me. That has made white people comfortable...and comfortable with their prejudices. Now there's one that looks like someone else. Looks like "them." Now they may be forced to face those prejudices....and when the universe doesn't implode because of a black President...or maybe things actually get a little better, they'll start to let go of some of that.

Something we're all better for.

You know I read a Rolling Stone article on O a couple weeks ago and the author had a REALLY great paragraph that's stuck with me (Paraphrasing slightly):

Obama is a living referendum on race because he's everything white America said it wanted. Work hard. Go to Harvard. Be more Martin and less Malcolm and all doors will be opened.

I guess that's true. Have blacks "overcome" in this country? No. And not for a while I expect. But it's nice to see, after so long, America live up to its ideals instead of pandering to it's baser instincts.

Most of us cried genuinely. Sherri's blubbering was an embarrassment.

I would like to share with you and any potentially audience a very special music composition that pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy and historic dream. The moving lyrics convey proof that Dr. Kings' historic and magnificent dream is still revealing itself. As Barack Obama approaches this historic accomplishment of being elected as President of the United States, it confirms that Dr. King's dream is still very much alive.

As the chorus reads:
King's Dream still lives on
Inside of us today
Time has come
For his vision to be realized
Though the journey's been long...

I feel like such a dunce. I was so impressed and grateful that America was picking the smart one for a change, ignoring the boogie man politics for a change - that I really had almost forgotten how important and historic this was, not counting Obama the human being, but simply and profoundly counting his skin color.

I'm so grateful to Sherri, and to David Allen Grier of Chocolate News for waking me up to cry tears of joy with them. It's long overdue. I can't believe you girls were shushing her, our world needed to clearly see everything she was communicating. She brought me as close to really understanding as anyone possibly could.

I tell me grandson, "Bishop, you know how to handle it, think O BAM AH!" And he says the sweetest words back to me, "I know grandma, I know. Stay calm, use my head, treat people with respect. Come on Grandma, trust me, I got this."

I do then. And it makes my chest ache with gratitude. Thank God for Obama.

Yes. Thank you. That was a beautiful message for your grandson to hear and to repeat. To know in his heart.

Compare that message to the ones children must have heard before the good work of people like Martin Luther King, Jr.

Keep your head down. Stay silent. Know your place.

Part 2 What makes their love for each other mean less than your love for your wife? I told him if there is a god, why would he want anything to do with you or your ilk. People like you really just want to control someone elses lives, first there was slavery and now since that is illegal you have moved on to gays and women.

I am a black woman and I completely understand the joy of seeing Barack Obama become our next President. The emotion I feel something I wasn't prepare for, I didn't realize that it would mean so much to me. That it would touch my heart and soul in a way I can't even describe. Maybe I was afraid to allow myself to believe because I didn't want to be hurt and disappointed. Yesterday, I was happy all day, just the thought of Obama made me smile and feel hopeful for out future and the future of my daughter. I was talking to a person at work about gays and abortions. He is catholic and you know he falls back on the bible. But to me the bible is just an excuse that some people use to justify their bigotry. I asked him why does it maters what two consenting adults does? What makes it your business?

Making it as a comedian has nothing to do with black or white. it's if your family and friends are supportive. There are many great black comedians right now, as there were in the past. I really don't like this lady....... The world is flat, Jesus came before the greeks, she didn't know Pattie LaBelle was black. She's not that bright.

You said, "Making it as a comedian has nothing to do with black or white. it's if your family and friends are supportive." And funny that you were right about it doesn't matter if you're black or white, but you're so wrong about the support of family and friends. NOT necessarily.... if you're a mismatcher, and about one third of people are, it would take the 'lack of support' from family and friends to motivate you.

So I guess we could say YOU are not that bright.

You're also ugly, your feet stink, you pull the wings off flies and you wouldn't appreciate humor if it jumped up and bit you in the face, or the arse, either one, I always get those two mixed up on you.

Or in other words, if you don't have something better to do that attack someone as precious as Sherri, you need to get a life. She's not Einstein, but so what? Neither are you, neither am I.... but she doesn't have a mean or malicious bone in her body and Lord knows, no one can say that about you and me. :)

She voted for Obama, let's be clear on that. BUT, for her to be undecided simply because Palin has a child with Down's Syndrome makes absolutely NO SENSE.

Special Needs children will be better served by a Universal healthcare system than they would have been by empty words and lip-service from someone who would never 'redistribute' wealth to fund social programs. What was Sarah going to do, exactly? Besides exploiting people with Special Needs to get votes, what was the follow-up? Nothing.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:50 AM on 11/06/2008

Palin campaigned against an amendment here in Colorado that would have helped children with special needs who now wait 5 years for help. She wouldn't have helped anyone's special needs children. That would be socialism!

Of course she had the right not to vote for Obama my real concern is that , she failed to understand that it was just about history, not about each of personnally , but about us as a people
Plain and simple....With so many racist code behaviours and whistles, and statements i can't believe she did hesitate so long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but hey, Obama won!!!

It sickens me that there are so many "enlightened" liberals in here bashing on Ms. Shepherd. She just witnessed something she probably thought she'd never see in her lifetime, and it overtook her. It wasn't contrived, those emotions were real.

I'm not even a fan of The View, but watching that made ME tear up. And whether she's funny or not has no bearing on the topic at-hand. So grow up.

And then I see these same "enlightened" liberals making racist presumptions and accusations regarding the passing of Prop. 8.

As a straight, white woman, some of you really make me sick. Prop. 8 was something I had REALLY hoped would be knocked down....but as another poster pointed out, it was confusing. I'm an intelligent person and it took ME a few minutes to figure out which way someone should vote if they wanted to keep gay marriage legal in CA.

I'm saddened for the gay community over this loss, but please, don't turn yourselves into the angry, hate-spewing minority, unfairly blaming another group of people for your loss. Get out there and do something about it. Show those narrow-minded bigots in CA that you're not going to go down without a fight.

What is wrong with this Sherri woman? She is comparing a mobility limitation to Racial issues? And she probably voted for republicans just because the VP has a child with down syndrome?

It sounds to me like she voted for Obama.

Her son is special needs, so she obviously had a conflict of interest over which party to vote for. For anyone to belittle her struggle with the decision just shows how blatantly unfair people can be.

i am so rolling my eyes about the special needs children issue. anyone that really thinks sarah palin would have been their advocate in the white house is delusional. having a special needs child has obviously not given her any insight into what a typical special needs child and their family needs. my niece is a special needs child. my entire family voted for barack obama. while he didnt make this a campaign issue, i feel my niece is likely to be better off in his administration, partially because i think america as a whole will be better off.

come on, she clearly doesnt understand. she belittled the fruit fly research in the very policy speech she gave on special needs, and autism, not realizing, apparently, that this research was one of the few glimmers of hope for autism. she has no grasp of the issues.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:49 AM on 11/06/2008

What shocked me was how McCain said (in the final debate) that Palin "understood special needs like autism"...then went on to say she "understood autism better than anyone" as if she had personal experience with it. Her baby has DOWN SYNDROME, NOT autism. I was sitting on my couch thinking, "Has he even MET his running mate?"

I didn't know that little tidbit about the fruit fly research, so thanks for the info.

As a White person, tears came to my face too watching the last great limitation be removed from African American dreams BUT woke up the next day to find that 70% of Black voters in CA voted to put limitations on me (Prop.8). I didn't realize when Blacks talked about Civil Rights they were only referring to themselves.

I feel exactly the same way. My happiness for Obamas win is tainted by my anger about proposition 8, and the fact that people like Sherri Shepherd were the ones who voted to rob me of my civil rights make it all the more bitter. It is a bittersweet victory for many people, and it is hard for me to be happy for Sherri.

I implore you to really look at the CNN Exit Poll. http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/polls/#CAI01p1
This "70%" number is based on an exit poll w/a sample size of under 2500 PEOPLE. It so unfair and really irresponsible for ppl in the media and otherwise to continue to say 70% of black ppl voted against it when that just isn't true. They don't know how 70% black ppl voted. They *might* know what a sample of 2240 ppl out of 16.5 million voters may have done. They *might* know what 134.4 black women may have voted and they claim to know that 100.8 of these women voted Yes. That doesn't deserve the indictment of a whole identifiable group of ppl? Certainly not, and to do so is quite bigoted.

0% of black men were polled. There are no breakdowns for age at all when it comes to blacks in the sample. Why wasn't that data collected? Something is extremely flawed w/this poll and someone has a reason for attempting to project this image as fact. I am absolutely CERTAIN black ppl aren't/weren't the organizers that placed this amendment on the ballot. Directing anger and blame towards black ppl for the passage of prop 8 is clearly misdirected.

I was touched to see the promise of our great nation fulfilled, yet again, yesterday. As a bi-racial American, I'm filled with pride. But as a gay American, yesterday was indeed bittersweet.

But I want to make one thing clear. Bemoaning the advances of one segment of our population, because we're frustrated by the lack of freedom in another, accomplishes nothing. I live in California and supported "Vote No on Prop 8." But I saw very little outreach targeted at the African American and Latino community, to educate people on exactly what the proposition meant. I also met numerous people who were confused by the proposition's wording. They thought that voting yes was a vote for the rights of gays/lesbian to marry. Since minority voters went to the polls in record numbers for this historic election, it's not surprising that their votes on this proposition were high. Hindsight is 20/20, but we should have planned for this. I believe that if we had focused on reaching out to these two large voting blocs, we would have had a different result.

But the fight for equality is not over. Barack Obama's victory was a sign that the nation is moving towards equality. For some of us, it didn't happen yesterday...but it will. And we must never give up.

I'm a straight, married, middle-aged mother and I have heard all the arguments against gay marriage, mostly from my ultra-religious family. But for the life of me, I cannot get anyone to explain to me what right anyone has to decide for a stranger who that person should or should not love.

You love who you love and you want who you want, and if you are an American citizen and you pay taxes to support this country, you should have ALL THE SAME RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES OF EVERY OTHER AMERICAN CITIZEN!!! NO EXCEPTIONS. This is no different than criminalizing marriage between consenting adults of different races. We got rid of miscegenation laws for this exact reason. Nobody has the right to tell an American citizen whom they can and cannot marry, whatever their sex. You can't deny an American citizen the basic human right to marry whomever they please, as it deprives them of their right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It's flat out unconstitutional.

I respect religion, but I can't stand people who go puking their faith on innocent bystanders. I have enough trouble just managing my own life. It's none of my business what you do with yours. So enough already. If gays can't marry, then we should stop expecting them to cough up tax money. If they can't have all the freedoms other Americans enjoy, they shouldn't have to keep paying for freedom they're not getting.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:45 AM on 11/06/2008

I am also from a ultra-religious family and straight and I couldn't agree with you more! It is no one's business who consenting adults chose to marry. If we truly believe in the concept of separation of church and state, then marriage, as far as the state is concerned is a legal construct between two adults, period. What is the state's argument for not allowing gays to marry, except a secular definition of what a marriage should be? That is not separation of church and state!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:09 AM on 11/06/2008

You are correct that the wording made it seem that a Yes vote was for giving the gays/lesbians the right to marry. I know my mother voted Yes she thought she was supporting gay/lesbian rights. She was very upset when I told her that she voted incorrectly. I believe that a lot of people voted incorrectly and was actually shocked to see the Prop 8 pass.

You are also correct that there was very little outreach to African American communites on Vote No on Prop 8 and there was much more outreach by the YES supporters through churches especially. I think you have to blame the organizers of the for not having a good ground game. Gay and Lesbian issues are a very thorny issue in black and latin communities and there is still a lot of work to be done to break this prejudice.

I completly can relate to what Sherri was feeling inside. It does give hope that your child has no limitations on them and Barack paved the way for many to come. There is nothing wrong with her speaking life into her son, seeing that before the 2008 election there had never been a Black President. I am African American and I love all people. People are created in the image of God regardless to their race, gender, or religion. If we don't build up our kids and encourage them who else is going to do it? I am glad that Obama won and this truly will become The United States of America, no more division. It made me cry seeing all the people white, black, hispanic, chinese reacting to the news of Obama's victory. I am so proud that America has changed it's views on people. Now, I say to black men do not say that a particular race is keeping you from getting ahead. This election broke barriers against many obstacles, prejudices, lazinesss, and just darn right ignorance. I wish the Obama family much success in the upcoming year. I am going to be in D.C when they get there to give them a warm welcome.

This is the problem with America. Is Sherri Shepherd that STUPID (YES STUPID), that she didnt know what issues the candidates supported until Tuesday? For God's sake, she is on a show that has been arguing about this election for the past 9 months, and most of the candidates have been on the show.

She lied to her kid if her kid grows up and turns out to be "gay" he will NOT be able to do anything he wants to in this country. Those tears made me want to throw up for this woman who didnt factor in the big picture.
