Sherri Shepherd broke down in tears on "The View" Wednesday talking about Barack Obama's victory. The mother of a young son with special needs, Sherri related to Sarah Palin and had been openly undecided. But with Obama's victory, she broke down over the historic win of an African American. Speaking of the Civil Rights Movement and the limitations she was told she had had growing up, Sherri said in part, "To look at my baby and go, you don't have to have limitations..." and she broke down in tears.

I don't care why Sherri was "undecided" for so long. This is one of the most genuine, touching bits of video I've seen. As a white woman, her words and hard to restrain emotion help me feel even more fully the weight of what's been shed with this election. Generations of limitations torn down like the Berlin Wall.

Whoopi, baby you cracked me up.... "don't go there". Yes, we are all going to be turning into puddles of tears for a while... thankfully it is tears of joy.

Well she also isn't sure if the world is flat or round, so this is not a very decisive person we're talking about here.

That might be the most touching thing I've read/seen/heard all day.

My mother passed that "no limitations" message to me as a child, and paired it with a warning that it was also my responsibility to make sure that there would be no limitations for anyone else either.

I'm so very honored that I could be a part of a vote that allowed Sherri to pass that same message of empowerment on to her son. It means I did right by my mother.

From what I hear No on Prop 8 did not do enough to get people educated to support the measure. The Yes forces used out of state money and out hustled the No forces to get his bill passed. More outreach to Latino communities and other groups needed to be done to get the Prop defeated. All gay props were defeated in the election across the country and gay marriage will be a hard fight. While we see a black president-elect we have yet to see a gay nominee for the Democrat or Republican party. Face it if Barack Obama was to support gay marriage would he of been elected?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:55 AM on 11/06/2008

Dude. Its not about Obama supporting it. But that the black community voted overwhelmingly to deny another minority group their rights. No other racial group voted so overwhelmingly to ban gay marriage. Whites were barely for it and Latinos barely against it.

Ever heard of divide and conquer? You're falling for it, HARD. The failure of the proposition DOES NOT fall at the feet of less than 10% of the population. Now all of a sudden when black ppl vote in higher numbers (ALONG W/EVERYONE ELSE), it's our fault when the proposition fails? Based on the faultiest polling of all, an exit poll analysis on a CHRISTIAN blog?! We ("black community") don't have gay friends, family members, children, parents? We aren't gay & lesbian too?! We aren't interested in fairness, equality and protection under the law? None of us? All "the blacks" hate "the gays" and are working to deny gay rights???

Lick your wounds, but don't inflict everyone else w/the venom. The next question needs to be how to get the issue addressed on a national level so these freedoms and liberties are extended to everyone, and not decided in the states. Alienating GROUPS of ppl along the way doesn't help. Stop looking for enemies where you have none.

Please. These other posters are correct: don't fall for the divide-and-conquer tactics of hatred. The same people who told us Obama is a socialist-communist-muslim are the same people trying to divide us.

Did Obama lash out when he was maligned and smeared? No, he showed those who might succumb to ignorance and fear that they had nothing to fear from him. The answer is in education. (It's also in the courts, but that a whole other story.)

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:23 AM on 11/06/2008

Obama's support is not the issue here. The issue is that black people voted overwhelmingly to deny another minority group their rights while they themselves were complaining about being denied theirs.
No other racial group did that. Whites narrowly opposed it and Latinos narrowly favored prop 8.

wow....i guess we should all hate black people now, right?

lol....i think you need to understand that to a lot of people, even super liberal folks like myself, marriage represents more than a lifetime commitment...it's the beginning of a family (you know....with children). a lot of people have a hard time getting over the fact that two people of the same sex cannot reproduce....as a result, they are against gay marriage and even more so allowing them to adopt

while i have reservations, i do support gay marriage....i believe society is better when no one feels like they are being denied of something...and while i don't like the idea of gay couples having children, i understand that a loving home is always better than having nothing at all

pls don't use the ban as an excuse to justify any feelings of racial intolerance you might have...the fact of the matter is that america is just not ready...get over it.

No, there are socially conservative Democrats, and socially conservative Republicans. When I saw the No on 8 commercials, I knew that it would pass. It's extremity hard to convince people to go against their religious belief.

The No on 8 commercials were well done, but the did not reach out to fiscal conservative Republicans who voted on party line, and people who voted based on the economy. The argument that should have been done was: California is experiencing one of the biggest budget deficit which will either result in cutting programs, increasing taxes significantly or the doing of both at this economically stressful time. Emergency care, and after school programs could be cut, risking the most vulnerable from our population, the young and elderly. Prop 8, if passed would make things worst by reducing revenue to the state, hurt tourism, and small business.

California proposition 8: The same black people that many gay liberal Obama volunteers had worked so hard to turn out ended up ruining their marriages. It is almost as though black people felt a perverse pleasure in seeing gay people shed tears of sorrow while they themselves were shedding tears of joy.
I wonder if they would have voted for the amendment if it had defined marriage as being between a non-black man and a non-black woman.

I am neither black nor gay but just astounded at the hypocrisy. Yeah my baby.. you have no limitations unless you are gay.

So it's the "black people" that caused Prop 8 to fail? Wow. That's a quite narrow, pointed and bigoted attitude to embrace. You are aware that Af-Ams are ~7% of the population in Cali, right? And hopefully you are also aware that Af-Ams were considered at least 10% MORE likely to vote for the measure than, let's say umm, the "general population" (aka WHITES)? Fact check AT LEAST, before u thrust your ignorance on others, thanks.

One blog entry does not a fact make. Take it from a non-gay, black woman who affirms gay marriage and protection under the law, just like every other person I know.

^^^^ Word.

Maybe when it gets to the courts it will be repelled. We need two good Sup Ct Justices before the fight can go national w/success. Otherwise this same group is going to continue to push this issue on every state, slowly but surely.

While I couldn't agree more with Ms. Shepherd with regard to this being a great moment in America's pursuit of equal rights, I'm always dubious watching celebrities weep on cue for entertainment purposes. One of the things I respect about Barack Obama is his self possession, dignity, and disinclination to put his heart on exhibit in our media zoo.

Perhaps my joy is blunted because I and other gay Americans have just suffered a defeat in our pursuit of equality, and that so many people, Barack Obama included, still don't believe I should have all the rights and benefits of citizenship in this country.

Ms. Shepherd is rightly moved by the opportunities this moment in history offers to black youth, and I am too. Unfortunately, in declining to support full rights for all Americans, this administration has already sent a message to gay, lesbian, transgendered, and bisexual young people that they are second class citizens. This will result in the continuation of the terrifying suicide rate among such kids, and will encourage the daily violence and humiliation they suffer at the hands of their families and peers.

Until I can rejoice in full participation in a just society, I regret I must decline to bathe in a catharsis of schmaltz. The song says, "black boys are delicious" and it's true, but for me, this particular chocolate is bittersweet.

You must not know a lot of actors. Crying on cue ain't easy. And a comedienne near impossible.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:25 AM on 11/06/2008

She equated being the first black president to her being told she couldn't be a comedienne! No darling. It wasn't your race that was the issue, but the fact that you're not funny.

I guess you screen name says it all. It was being told that "there are things you just can't do". Funny or not. And that was all about race.

I really don't understand all the angry, insulting words on this thread.

Oh, come on. That's just uncalled for. She was always funny on Everybody Loves Raymond, and that show she did with Sarah Rue (and, I'm sorry, but as a "typical guy", that show had some "gifted" performers in those two). She's just not that bright, so often comes off as kind of a do-do. But that doesn't excuse the insults. If she was not funny, she wouldn't be working as a comedian. I thought the clip was touching. And besides, she's still better than Elisabeth!

now, please forgive my ogling chauvanism.

Before we knock this gal, none of us can imagine what this moment meant to the black community. As I stood with the Obamma camp in St. Louis last night, side by side, race didn't even become an issue. We were all there to support one another, celebrate together, laugh, and when California tally's came in, the tears flowed and we hugged each other. When I saw the tears of joy, relief, grattitude, release, I cried like a baby. All of us stood side by side, held hands, gave thanks, popped the champagne, and rejoiced. The days of the back of the bus were over. Equality that was long over due was regained, hope and years of opression were gone. Finally, black and white didn't matter. We were all in that room, seeing eye to eye, heart to heart, friend to friend. That is what this was really about folks. The rest is gravy. If this gal cried, I understand. Not having her family there to see this moment was tragic for her, a double, bitter sweet moment. I get it.

I would like to share with you and any potentially audience a very special music composition that pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy and historic dream. The moving lyrics convey proof that Dr. Kings' historic and magnificent dream is still revealing itself. As Barack Obama approaches this historic accomplishment of being elected as President of the United States, it confirms that Dr. King's dream is still very much alive.

As the chorus reads:
King's Dream still lives on
Inside of us today
Time has come
For his vision to be realized
Though the journey's been long...
We're finding the strength to carry on

Elizabeth is the best part of that show. She should quit and see what kind of ratings they would get. She needs to be on a show that actucally lets differing "views' be heard & it won't happen with those hysterical women.

I'm sorry, but Sherri Shepherd angers me beyond belief.

For her to say that she was 'undecided' UP UNTIL THE DAY speaks volumes as to her awareness, logic (or lack thereof), and deepens the level of intellectual inferiority that she contains.

Simply absurd.
