Matthew Yglesias points out an interesting New York Times map on the one part of the country where John McCain did significantly better than George W. Bush -- Appalachia.

As Ygleias writes:

You can see why John McCain's principled stand against higher taxes on the wealthy would have a special resonance in this region. Liberals who thought race had something to do with those appeals should be ashamed of themselves.

UT and ID are very very interesting.

Hopeful that 2012 would be another blowout (if economy improves).

Looking like it. The stronger side in the Civil War in the GOP at the moment are the fundamentalists. That should lead them to visibly try to obstruct even rational policy. I see another GOP drubbing in 2010 mid-terms...

I would suggest that if you mapped low literacy rates the same way it would look very similar. It is no secret that conservatives are against improving the public education system. The more educated one is the less likely one is to vote Republican. Contrary to conservative economic theory they have also left us with historic debt. I can't say that this is an accident. They know that they can never get rid of entitlements through legislation. They are trying to bankrupt the country so there are no funds for entitlements.

I am old enough to remember when the Republican party was considered to be the party of the rich. Apparently it is now the party of the uneducated. But then again that lack of intellectual curiousity is what allows the GOP to fill their constituents with whatever nonsense they care to spew without being questioned.

This is Creationist Country. There is a serious IQ problem in these areas. Maybe more funds for education? And, getting religion out of classrooms and politics.

As someone living in the midst of them, you have no idea how correct you are.

So very sad. Not that McCain won this part of the country, but because we all know why. And in fairness, I don't believee McCain is a racist...but he allowed his campaign to tread those waters...he allowed Palin to talk about "palling around with terrorist", he spouted socialism, communism...tried to make an issue with John Lewis and the George Wallace comment...and the only reason John Lewis made the comment was because of McCain and Palin's rallies and campaigning...

Having said that...it still is sad that these folks in this part of the country are in lala land...they don't get it...the world is chaning and I don't think it's coming back to the way they remember it...Obama's win was more historical than people see right now...he broke ALL the barriors for ALL races of people...not just African-American's. Now the Asian, Native American, Latino, Hispanic, etc. can have the same dream and goal. A woman running for President wasn't going to break those barriors...especially not a white woman...that would have just meant that white men and woman can run and win the highest office in the land..but the Obama win is so much more significant.

All American's should be proud...and even those in the Apaliancians.

I've lived around this area for the past few years. I love going out into the beautiful countryside and meeting the helpful, friendly residents. Pull off to the side of the road and lift your car hood and count how many cars pass you without offering help. Not many, if any. However, I am also aware that , were I black, many of the kindnesses that have been proffered me would have been withheld. I don't know how many times I've been engaged with conversation with a stranger and found myself enjoying the company only to be jarred by a racist joke or smear. Sad.

The title needs work. Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and northwest Texas are not in Appalachia.

MsLiz, you demand examples and offer none. You should read through the following articles and see if there's a geographical trend:

You won't (read through), most likely, because people with your M.O. are generally not interested in changing their minds...

It wasn't McCain who did better than Bush in those parts. It was Palin.
