I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Michelle Obama Anna Wintour

WWD:

Could we see Michelle Obama on the cover of Vogue soon after the inauguration of her husband, President-elect Barack Obama? The next first lady appeared on a slew of magazine covers as the presidential race entered its last months. But Vogue has been campaigning for a Michelle Obama cover since last September -- both in print and in person. Editor in chief Anna Wintour and contributing editor Andr Leon Talley hosted several fund-raisers for the Obamas last summer, rallying the fashion community's support for the Illinois senator. The magazine profiled Michelle Obama in its September issue and featured her as an It girl in the April one. Obama campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett was profiled in October. Vogue even spread its affections to the Democratic vice presidential candidate -- the magazine photographed in November four generations of Biden women, including Vice President-elect Joe Biden's wife, Jill. (Vogue showed some love to the Republican ladies, too. Cindy McCain was profiled in the May issue and Roberta McCain was featured in the August Age issue.)

Michelle Obama has an Ivy League education. I doubt if appearing on the cover of Vogue is at the top of her priority list. I have a feeling that she is more interested in substance than in appearance. If we can have a First Lady like that, it will help all women....

How refreshing that will be! Michelle is exceptionally beautiful (look at that dazzling smile in the pic!), gracious, elegant and highly intelligent but I can't see her putting this on the top of her to-do list either. Though Barack would no doubt enjoy seeing her on the cover of Vogue because he adores her to bits and would love to "show her off" to the world as America's First Lady. But I also know how much he respects women so he wouldn't push Michelle into doing it if she didn't feel it was appropriate, and he would share her opinion that substance is vastly more important than appearance.

What an extraordinary couple - what a breath of fresh air.

Vogue has never been racist. (Weightist, yes.)

Skeletons with skin, draped with cloth. Yuck.

I like you Michelle, but that red and black dress was awful the other night. Please wear more solids, I don't know who is advising you on style, but the red/blk flowery number you wore at the convention was also awful, but the solid color dress you wore at the convention, you were absolutely stunning. Please no more flowers and fire works. I felt so embarassed for you the other night.

i liked the dress a lot, but it didn't look as good with the cardigan. she rocks the sleeveless dresses, but i bet it was too cold that evening. she has been practically flawless in her appearance, i give her a pass on this one.

I think the red dress was her first miss. We all have our "off" nights but I suspect she'll look phenominal at the inaugural events. There is a part of me that is looking forward to the fashion our new First Lady will present as she appears to be stylish and classy with a little sass. I have absolutely no ill feeling toward Mrs. Bush but her style is a little fuddy duddy to me and not something a woman of my age (early 30s) could aspire to.

I think the sweater ruined it. It's a sleveless dress. I would have preferred something solid and more sophisticated myself, preferably in blue of course.

I have to disagree with you, I thought she looked great. One of my co-workers thought she looked like a black widow. I think she was trying to coordinate her dress with that of her husband's suit and tie, and the dresses of her two daughters, who probably picked out their dresses.

Now, her outfit on Jay Leno's Tonight show was amazing - the solids and prints and the way the colors flowed together topped off with that great pin was simply marvelous.

I loved her dress on the view, and her dress for the speech was great. She is a beautiful woman, and is an unashamed girly girl. She can afford the expensive clothes in boutiques and chooses everyday wear from Target, the Gap, H&M, and J.Crew. I think her style will be legendary, and it's comfortable for her.

She should do it on the condition that Vogue puts other women of color on their magazine. That means Asians, Latinas, East Indians, etc, etc. It's time to end the quasi apartheid in entertainment and media.

I'd like to see her on any and all magazines . . . as is. She is an ideal role model for the women and girls of our country. She is healthy, which is very important, but definitely not small.

Hope she won't wear the trashy catwalk-type fashion that she did on Victory night.

I hope she burns the dress. I also hope Andre Leon Talley does not in anyway influence what she will wear in the spread.

Ms. Wintour wants anyone on the cover of Vogue to be size 0. While Michelle Obama looks great she is far from a size 0. I thought it was ridiculous that Oprah agreed to lose so much weight to be on the cover.

Wintour demands that cover models are size zero? Sheesh I never knew that. In that case, Michelle, give her the two fingered salute if she asks you.

Size zero indeed. Here's my own two-fingered salute. V

From a woman who is not size zero, never wants to be size zero (who wants a huge head on top of a skeletal body for God's sake??) and thinks all women, of whatever size, and whatever age, are beautiful.
