RALEIGH, N.C. — President-elect Obama won North Carolina on Thursday, a triumph that underscored his political strength as he turned nine states that President Bush won in 2004 to Democratic blue.

The Associated Press declared Obama the winner after canvassing counties in North Carolina to determine the number of outstanding provisional ballots. That survey found that there are not enough remaining ballots for Republican John McCain to close a 13,693-vote deficit.

North Carolina's 15 electoral votes brings Obama's total to 364 _ nearly 100 more than necessary to win the White House _ to McCain's 162. Missouri is the only state that remains too close to call, with McCain leading by several thousand votes.

Obama's win in North Carolina was the first for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter won the state in 1976.

Of Bush's 2004 states, Obama captured Virginia, Florida and North Carolina in the South, Ohio, Indiana and Iowa in the Midwest and Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico in the West. All total, Obama has won 28 states and the District of Columbia, McCain 21.

Obama ran an aggressive general election campaign in North Carolina after his wide primary victory in the state over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton suggested he could win a trove of electoral votes that most assumed would belong to McCain.

The Obama campaign's focus on the state's two-week early voting period was critical. Obama won more than 1.1 million early votes, giving him a 180,000-vote advantage heading into Election Day _ a gap too great for McCain to overcome.

McCain spent months watching North Carolina from afar during the summer as Obama visited regularly, but the GOP nominee returned to the state in the campaign's final few weeks as polls suggested an Obama victory was possible.

Obama spent millions of televisions ads that were buttressed by hundreds of staff members in dozens of offices to take advantage of North Carolina's rapidly changing demographics and a large bloc of black voters galvanized by his bid to become the first African-American president.

North Carolina's growing population includes a booming urban corridor from Charlotte to Raleigh along Interstate 85, while retirees from northern states _ who are more willing to vote for Democrats _ are filling the state's coast and mountains.

Exit polls also showed that some 30 percent of voters considered race a factor in their decision, with the numbers split evenly among voters who backed McCain and Obama. Nearly one in five voters considered race an important factor.

The economy also played a role _ with 60 percent of voters considering it the top issue, with those voters breaking slightly to Obama. The state's manufacturing industry has been devastated by competitive imports, and the state's banking economy centered in Charlotte was struck by economic turmoil that led to the downfall of Wachovia Corp., in the weeks before Election Day.

Obama's win completed the party's sweep at the top of the North Carolina ticket. Beverly Perdue was elected the state's first female governor, while Kay Hagan unseated one of the GOP's most respected figures in Sen. Elizabeth Dole.

Here's something that hasn't been reported yet here.

Obama has a good chance of capturing an electoral vote from Nebraska, one of two states that allocates its electoral votes by congressional district.

Obama's is about to squeak ahead in the Omaha based district in Nebraska. Wouldn't that be something!!!

THAT is the power of a 50 state strategy.

The Nader vote kept him from winning MO, me thinks.

There are still provisional ballots to be counted in MO so he may still win that as well.

I didn't know that Nader is an Arab. I had thought that he was Jewish.

Anyway, He'll be 78 years old when the next Presidential Election comes around. Maybe we're finished (I hope) with him. Also, he doesn't look very healthy.

Thanks for the hard work Chronic. We here in states like California appreciate all the effort you Red State folks put in to turn them BLUE. I have been both proud and privileged to represent this country. I'm falling in love with Lady Liberty all over again.

Congratulations to the good citizens of North Carolina and all those others across this great nation, both Democratic and Republican, who made the effort to participate in our great democratic process! This election proves we still are a government of, by and for the People! Now, let's unite and get the peoples' business done!

Hallelujah! We worked so very hard here. I think that the final margin after the provisional counts will be even bigger margin for Obama...most of the provisional ballots are in blue counties. It may just be 15,000 votes in the end...but I don't care. One touching story that I just have to share from our journey here in NC. As a 50ish white woman, it was also one of the most heart-warming experiences of my life to canvas for Obama in an older black neighborhood in Cary (mostly white and conservative) and to be greeted with such incredible warmth and charm...and that was BEFORE they saw my Obama button. They couldn't wait to tell me that they had already voted and knew exactly what day and time they did. I was invited into homes to have tea or a piece of pie (very fitting given Obama's pie saga) and a very nice man gave me fresh vegetables. One little girl so badly wanted a yard sign...so I drove back to the local office and got her one...plus her own Obama button. She and her mama spent 15 minutes looking for the best place to put that yard sign so that everyone could see it. I cried then, I cried Tuesday evening and I cry again today, knowing that we pulled it out in NC, even if just by a nose. He is truly OUR President. God bless America

Beautiful!

I gave a little girl a yard sign, too. I was canvassing in her grandparents' rural PA neighborhood. They were afraid to put the sign in their yard, so she and her parents took it home and put it proudly in their yard. This adorable child was jumping for joy at being given her own Obama sign. You would have thought it was Christmas.

What a touching story. I put my sign in my window here in Kansas for fear of it being stolen and trashed. I am ashamed that my state only went 32% for Obama. During the year of the war industry of World War II our state that fought the Missourians to prevent slavery inherited a whole bunch of Arkies, Okies and Missouri folks and boy did they bring a mindset I find offensive and the votes that go with it. You should be very proud that your state has broken the party and color barrier. I hear it is a great place to retire...so maybe some day I will check it out.

Congratulations, North Carolina!
Of the zillions of blogs and comments I have read it seems that perhaps I'm the only one that's noticed, or at least commented on the people closest to the of the corruption that needs to change. That is DC, the District of Columbia with Washgton the epicenter where 93% !!!! of the voters choose Barack Obama. I think a large round of applause is due these all to often forgotten citizens, don't you?

The demographic changes are making Virginia and North Carolina trend further and further blue. In 2012, 2016 and onward they will be as safely democrat as states like Wisconsin and Minnesota are now.

Republicans don't want to admit Obama's win was a landslide, but he got more than double the votes then McCain. This was a blowout and few are giving Obama his props. Come on people!
