RALEIGH, N.C. — President-elect Obama won North Carolina on Thursday, a triumph that underscored his political strength as he turned nine states that President Bush won in 2004 to Democratic blue.

The Associated Press declared Obama the winner after canvassing counties in North Carolina to determine the number of outstanding provisional ballots. That survey found that there are not enough remaining ballots for Republican John McCain to close a 13,693-vote deficit.

North Carolina's 15 electoral votes brings Obama's total to 364 _ nearly 100 more than necessary to win the White House _ to McCain's 162. Missouri is the only state that remains too close to call, with McCain leading by several thousand votes.

Obama's win in North Carolina was the first for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter won the state in 1976.

Of Bush's 2004 states, Obama captured Virginia, Florida and North Carolina in the South, Ohio, Indiana and Iowa in the Midwest and Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico in the West. All total, Obama has won 28 states and the District of Columbia, McCain 21.

Obama ran an aggressive general election campaign in North Carolina after his wide primary victory in the state over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton suggested he could win a trove of electoral votes that most assumed would belong to McCain.

The Obama campaign's focus on the state's two-week early voting period was critical. Obama won more than 1.1 million early votes, giving him a 180,000-vote advantage heading into Election Day _ a gap too great for McCain to overcome.

McCain spent months watching North Carolina from afar during the summer as Obama visited regularly, but the GOP nominee returned to the state in the campaign's final few weeks as polls suggested an Obama victory was possible.

Obama spent millions of televisions ads that were buttressed by hundreds of staff members in dozens of offices to take advantage of North Carolina's rapidly changing demographics and a large bloc of black voters galvanized by his bid to become the first African-American president.

North Carolina's growing population includes a booming urban corridor from Charlotte to Raleigh along Interstate 85, while retirees from northern states _ who are more willing to vote for Democrats _ are filling the state's coast and mountains.

Exit polls also showed that some 30 percent of voters considered race a factor in their decision, with the numbers split evenly among voters who backed McCain and Obama. Nearly one in five voters considered race an important factor.

The economy also played a role _ with 60 percent of voters considering it the top issue, with those voters breaking slightly to Obama. The state's manufacturing industry has been devastated by competitive imports, and the state's banking economy centered in Charlotte was struck by economic turmoil that led to the downfall of Wachovia Corp., in the weeks before Election Day.

Obama's win completed the party's sweep at the top of the North Carolina ticket. Beverly Perdue was elected the state's first female governor, while Kay Hagan unseated one of the GOP's most respected figures in Sen. Elizabeth Dole.

I never listen to Rush but today I decided to see what he had to say. It was hilarious. The right wingnuts are devouring their young now. If you want a good laugh listen to a few minutes of his rants though I wouldn't over do it because it still is toxic crap LOL.

Finally!!! Cleveland County went 60-40 for McCain, something I figured would happen. But I do know that some white people voted Democratic for President. Sooner or later, we'll evolve and become a more progressive county. It is already happening with the many different peoples from different cultures moving in, not to mention people interracially marrying. Only time will tell. Senator Obama's Presidential win only makes one wonder not if but when.

this will happen when cleveland county recognizes evolution...i say this as a product of cleveland county schools

As an NC native, this means everything to me. My pride in my home is now complete! It works wonders when you ASK a southerner for their vote. Manners actually mean something to us here!

Thank You NC GOTV! You just made one of my dreams come true, and my children's home a better place!

YEAH NC !!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to the hundreds of Obama volunteers who made this possible. And my county (Forsyth) went blue too. I want to hang on to this feeling the rest of my life. I've got an Obama high that's just about better than any illicit drug I've ever tried :)

Georgia is next (my other southern home)

I am proud of North Carolina for breaking the chains of our fathers and grandfathers beliefs concerning many issues....including racial barriers. My family comes from white hillbilly land down in Georgia and Alabama. I have lived my whole life in North Carolina, and I have seen alot of the same here. But, PRAISE GOD, we have my family on their heels...THE TARHEELS !! My 'Uncle Buford' and his sons all voted for Obama, and we are working on the rest of Georgia. One last question concerning slavery...how would you have felt if it would have been you? I would have been OUT OF MY MIND! Anyway...here's to Virginia and North Carolina...we are connecting the blue dots !!
(Can you feel it...do you know what it is...it's HOPE !!!)
Thank You Forsyth County (Kernersville) !!

McCain won Missouri by a very narrow margin of just 5,868 votes, approximately 0.2%, over Obama.

Nader polled 17,769, if he would have pulled out, Obama could have bagged Missouri, giving him eleven electoral votes.

Providing one more reason to dislike Ralph Nader. Will he just go sit down somewhere? LOL.

It just gets better and better. And seeing whites and blacks (and others, Hispanics and everyone else) coming together to make this moment is just... really nice.

People should feel proud and for a variety of reasons.

I am so loving this!

We worked unbelievably hard for this victory but are partying hardy now!

It made me cry all over again to see NC blue. Barack and Michelle did a wonderful job here- telling their life stories, listening to ours, and finding all the right issues that made us say Yes We Can!

We're blue blue blue blue, dam, it just feels so good. Like everything that's wrong can be turned around.

I'm a native Ashevillean and it appears that Buncombe County could claim some of the kudos, as BHO took the county with a little more than BHO took the state, hence putting him over McC.

Nice job, Land of the Sky!!!!!

Montana will turn blue in 2012. Many liberal and progressive Californians and Coloradans, mostly highly educated young professionals are moving to Montana for some reason. We have a Democratic Governor and U.S. Senator. We worked hard this year and Obama spent lots of time in the state. We are chipping away at the West, one state at a time. The West is where the next election will be fought.

"are moving to Montana for some reason".

Montana is a beautiful place. It is also inexpensive if you compare it to California and Colorado and the population is not as big.

Don't get complacent. We need to pull this off every four years. I do not want to live through this again. Call, knock on doors, keep it alive. Kill apathy.

Did America just forget Missouri? It hasn'tbeen declared, and hasn't been mentioned in the news in a couple days.

Missouri yet to go...will probably go to McCain...lots of redneck racists there...

Redneck racists AND fundmentalist ignoramuses. I ought to know...I grew up in the Southwest corner.

My husband spent the two weeks before the election there as an Obama volunteer, staying at my mother's and working his butt off. He said he was impressed with how friendly the local folks are, but for god's sakes, he was in a bubble, mostly rubbing shoulders with the local labor union members and the "Secret Society of Democrats." (That's how undercover the liberals have to be in those parts.)

The local newspaper, The Joplin Globe, blew everyone's mind by endorsing Obama. First Demo endorsement in 100 years (their last was William Jennings Bryan in 1908.)

You should have read the hate-filled letters to the editor...

There are only three places you would want to live in that state: KC, St. Louis and Columbia.

I live in Virginia and we also "went blue" this year! The fact that Virginia and North Carolina voted for an African-American man, let alone a democrat, says this nation has come a long, long way. I am proud!

Looks like the GOP's whole southern strategy is coming apart at the seams... Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and missed Georgia by a hair.

Hate, race, bigotry and lying will only take you so far,
Eventually, truth wins out.
I am proud of America, but am sure the real hard work to fix this mess has et to be started.

Totally agree with that. If the demographics continue to shift, Georgia, SC, and Texas might be possible by 2012. Having lived in North Carolina for a number of years while I was growing up, I am so proud to see Carolina Blue going Obama Blue!

But ... but ... weren't we told he was UNELECTABLE???

Crow is the main dish on the menu of a whole lot of people after witnessing Obama's phenomenal victory ... and two days after the election, he's still winning!!!
