I Like ItI Don’t Like It

It didn't take long for the notoriously-fast-working folks at South Park to lampoon President-Elect Obama. Last night's episode featured the president-elect, Michelle Obama, John McCain and Sarah Palin. The episode, "About Last Night," revolves around an Ocean's 11-style plot to steal the Hope diamond.

I was actually disappointed with this episode. It wasn't really that funny. It would've been better if they had Obama turn out to be a Republican ;-)

I thought this episode was hysterical and its a lesson for adults about the word "assumption". However, I wouldn't be surprised if some McCain supporters really hid in a cave waiting for the world to implode.

Judging by the comments found here and the overall original description of the episode by Huffington Post, it's pretty safe to say that a lot of you missed the point. You can look at this episode in one of two ways. You can be ignorant and view it as tasteless and offensive humor (common in South Park), or you can have common sense and view it as the clever political and social commentary that it is. The Hope Diamond plot is an analogy to the pillaging of the American middle class and our economy. Note that both of the candidates are in on the plot. The Hope Diamond is a prized treasure, as is our economy. The evil group they work for is Corporate America/Major Banks. The South Park creators are smart guys. They mock our society and our political system.

Obama can't save the economy. He won't save the economy. He won't change anything. McCain is just as terrible, the only difference between the two being that he's the bigger war monger. Like most politicians he (Obama) will address trivial issues that will keep dumb people (the majority population) distracted from the real issues, ie: the illegal Iraq war, the failed and semi fabricated "War on Terror", and the Federal Reserve Board's rape of the American economy. Watch him expand the war and cry when your money becomes worthless.

I thought it was pretty funny. My favorite parts were Randy yelling, "looooossssssseeers," and Ike jumping out of the first floor window because he was a McCain supporter. I would also feel a little less terrified of Palin if she really was a British cat burglar.

The Gradma Toot thing was too soon, but it was kinda funny hearing a little old lady call in a fake bomb threat. Well to me anyways.

...I don't like South Park much, but I hope that they did a better job lampooning him in the rest of the episode than here. It was just kinda bland.

I read an interesting interview recently with the South Park guys in which they discussed the conservative bent (at least when politics are involved) in their show. They said the whole point of South park is taht it was born out of their hatred for Hollywood. And most of Hollywood is liberal. And most actors are idiotic liberals who preach holier than thou liberal ideology while living ridiculous, irresponsible, opulant lifestyles that reflect none of what they preach. So that's why South Park goes after liberal views more than conservative. They don't agree with conservatives EITHER, but they REALLY don't agree with the Hollywood liberal mindset. And also, everyone else in Hollywood is mocking George Bush and the Republicans, so for them to go after liberals is really just them being more original and different than the rest.

I don't really care what their political affiliations are. They're hilarious. That guinea pig episode last week almost killed me!

Except they didn't go after them in this ep.

This was a great episode. Surprisingly sweet in its handling of the presidential candidates. Probably the nicest episode of South Park in years.

Not so funny. When they started talking about the hope diamond, I changed the channel. I may not be their demographic. But this is such a historic moment in history that making fun/getting airtime/getting paid just seems like pandering. Sorry.

Yeah! I mean, making fun of Republicans is fine. But questioning something that I agree with? That just seems like pandering!

i hope you are being sarcastic. South Park makes fun of everybody/everything. If we can't laugh at ourselves...

I've been checking out the huffpo for about 9 months.
I know the well being of our country is something you have to take seriously but Geez, some people are too uptight.

My God, lighten up. For one thing, the episode didn't make FUN of anyone or anything. It portrayed ALL the candidates as characters from Ocean's 11, that the election was just a huge smokescreen in order to steal the Hope diamond. Man, really, grow a sense of humor. Jeez.

Randy (excited cartoon character) seemed a bit more calm than most Obama supporters I know.

People, the reason Matt and Trey do not make fun of Bush is because every other single comedian/show makes fun of him and it's old. To those who take offense to this, you clearly did not understand the episode. It was a storyline in which Obama/McCain were simply running to steal the Hope Diamond and sell it for 210 million. How do you find offense in that? Seriously... Fyi, Both Matt and Trey support Obama.

I agree. As you said going after Bush and McCain is just too obvious and easy and everyone does it anyways.

EVERYONE is fair game on South Park, even people they completely agree with or like. That's kind of the point of the show. They ridicule stoners all the time...you think those guys aren't smoking???

Didn't they have thet stupid show "That's my Bush" They are opportunists and not funny anymore.

I wonder if they had an alternate version for a Mac win or if they were confident enough that it wouldn't happen.

They probably did, since all you had to do is switch the Mccain - Obama roles. I got to see the rerun last night - it is freaking HI-larious! Loved Palin with the English accent.
