I Like ItI Don’t Like It

It didn't take long for the notoriously-fast-working folks at South Park to lampoon President-Elect Obama. Last night's episode featured the president-elect, Michelle Obama, John McCain and Sarah Palin. The episode, "About Last Night," revolves around an Ocean's 11-style plot to steal the Hope diamond.

Oh lord I hate it when South Park gets political. The episodes just about the boys themselves tend to be much funnier. Trey Parker and Matt Stone have a sophmoric understanding of politics, sometimes what they say it's just like...UGH GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. The episode with Al Gore was just the last straw for me, it's like they get all their info off the teevee and never try to think beyond that.

In this one, again, I liked the bits with the kids and the family - lol I love Stan's dad, always have - but that's about it.

They seriously, seriously need to do something else now.

It's called political satire...and you usually get your ideas by lampponing what you see on TV. As for being sophmoric - isn't that the whole idea? DUH!

calling this episode satire is being a little generous. They simply want to create absurd situations for familiar characters to get into but it isn't often they are making a politically subversive point.

I laughed all the way thru this. C'mon folks, it's a silly cartoon and the creators get to do what they want. It's called freedom of expression.

Was there a joke at all in this clip?

I swear, South Park is the only show on television who can get away with having a complete lack of content, just because it features popular news stories.

Exactly, and they had the nerve to call out Family Guy for having pointless pop culture references instead of timely, relevant, oh-so-important political and social commentary from their own talking feces and pothead sentient towels.

And you must be called out on having a complete lack of brains, just because you think that satirical shows presenting popular news stories are not relevant content.

Satire stimulates thought. It's been a common staple in our intellectual evolution since 2000 BC.

Parker and Stone have pretty much been ultra-sympathetic to George W Bush over the last 8 years. They simply refrain from skewering him. Did you not ever wonder why? I did.

From what I've read and heard, it's because Stone is a republican, and Parker is...not a Democrat.

If you pay close attention to South Park's political themes, and WHO they skewer the most, it's typically from a conservative perspective. I gave up on the show when I discovered that their liberal-seeming humor is really just so much right-wing BS.

I didn't watch this clip all the way through, because it wasn't funny. If, as somebody else wrote here, they mocked Barack's grandmother for faking her death, I'd say that's a perfect example of republican humor, which always falls flat on its face.

Its comforting to know that there are Democrats without the slightest sense of humour.
That not everything is black and white.
So what if they were Republicans? Whats your damn problem?

I agree. I don't care if they're democrats or republicans. They have done episodes that completely are offensive to me and my personal beliefs. But I still thought they were funny!!

They were the creators of "That's my Bush", and I never saw them rip on Clinton, believe me, he gave them ammunition. As for Obama's granny, I loved it. Laugh every now and then.

Didn't they do a short-lived live action show called "That's My Bush"? It did a great job of skewering the current occupant of the White House and featured Marcia Wallace as the sassy houskeeper/maid.

One Doctor partying, the other hung himself in the closet. Kyle' brother trying to commit suicide by jumping out a first floor window. Mcbush supporters hiding out in a cave waiting for the end of the world. I'm still rotflmao. Cartman trying to sell stolen TV's. wait i have to dry my eyes.
The ending was the best.

They do an episode a week. The dont put it into the can until late tuesday or early wednesday. They basically have 3D software that is waaaaaaaaaaay overkill for what their doing, so they dont have to spend alot of time on animation and can write in whatever they want.

As a South Park fan from day one,let me posit this take! Every four years the Democrats and Republicans conspire together to steal hope from the American people once again! (The Hope Diamond!?) Presidential elections are charades performed for the populace to let them think they have some sort influence on how the country is governed! I'm 57 and the power structure of the U.S. has not changed! The end of the episode however shows that everyone wants to believe that things can change for the best, that's why Barack and Michelle stay together to give it a shot! Only evil people would "Hope" they will fail!

We can take this opportunity to force the game to go our way, how? by staying involved and forcing the system to bend to our pressure, we must remain vigilant.

Obama supporters are d-bags, McCain supporters are overreacting, Obama might turn out fine, McCain is a good guy, Sarah Palin is "awesome". South Park is the best source of American culture.

Palin isn't awesome. Stop thinking with your other head. She uninformed, unintelligent, arrogant, dishonest, corrupt if you think those things are awesome then okay she's awesome.

Er...I think awcbuddy8 was talking about the show. As in - the Obama supporters went way over the top with their celebrating; the McCain supporters hid under their beds and caves and tried to kill themselves; Obama at the end decided to give being a President a shot and the McCain folks, once seeing the world didn't end, wondered if Pres Obama jsut might work out; McCain was actually cool in the episode; and Palin folksy demeanor was just an act - in fact she had an English accent.

Lighten up.

Really? I'm a huge South Park fan - seen every single episode ever... and this was the first episode this Season that I enjoyed. I didn't start really laughing until they showed Sarah Palin as a British Counter-Intelligence Expert only PRETENDING to be a hoot-nanny from Alaska.

This season has been a big let-down though otherwise. :(
