Will Smith joined Oprah on Thursday and talked about how moved he was when the election was officially called for Barack Obama, even imitating himself bawling on the floor. "Oprah I'm an action hero, I can't be crying on your show," he told her moments before imitating himself sobbing with happiness and falling to the floor. He pulled it together and got serious to talk about how much Obama's speech resonated with him.

Oprah shared her joy yesterday.

In using the internet to educate myself about things never taught me in public school, I learned of a Black man, Father Divine, who was politically influential and powerful until he died in 1965. I interpret many of his ideals and principles to be cornerstone of civil rights issues and racial equality. I also learned that the cult-nut Jim Jones wanted to model himself after Divine and attempted a take over. The recent anniversary of Jonestown got me to research that too and I found a very informative website jonestown.sdsu.edu

I hope to see more discussion of this.

I proudly voted for Barack Obama

It was one of the most important days in American History! We showed the world that we can not only talk the talk, but we can walk the walk! I'm a 64 year old disabled artist working with a bunch of 20 something recent college graduates. We are all still walking around with a starnge kind of glow. Yes we can? No, yes we did! Long live the President!

I cried. PROUD to have cried.

This was an EXTREMELY SIGNIFICANT event in AMERICAN history.

I don't care what a poster like jkairi thinks of that..or me.

Black people....white people....latino people....asian people....we were ALL crying...and screaming...and dancing...and drinking...and HONKING OUR HORNS...and envisioning the possibilities.......

it was (and IS) wonderful.

Um, no. It has been discussed that Will Smith would play Barack Obama in a movie before. As early as last fall 2007. No, you didn't call it first hun. Obama is even quoted as saying that although he has the ears, Will is better looking than him. Sorry, no props this time.

I thought he'd have wanted a Scientologist to win.

If Will Smith were a true Scientologist, he certainly could have advised Tom Cruise on over-the-top furniture antics on Oprah's show.

My sons and husband cried when Barack won. I was blown away by his margin of victory because we figured the election would be stolen once again. This time, we foiled their plot.

Clearly for many minorities, seeing one of color in the top spot in the country and the world is something they thought was impossible and assumed would be sabotaged or hi-jacked away from them. It is still registering and being assimilated by people who never thought it could happen.

Jimmy Carter was elected after a pervious Republican scandals with Nixon. Now you have another President elected under what the country feels is even worse abuse of office. Initiating unwarranted wars with countries and inventing excuses out of thin air, etc.

Now you have conditions where no Republican could possibly win and where a great intentioned person , who is honest and happens to be black, wins. All the stars lined up and the conditions for Obama. But for all minorities, I don't believe most can possibly understand why having Obama as President can possibly symbolize. It means, instead of feeling sorry for themselves and just asking for help to get themselves out of poverty, the chains that use to hold them back and they still perceived were there are now, over time, just yarn or twine and every time they now think about going outside the system, they would then be in essence pulling their man down. This is now the time for minorities to show what they are made of-by working hard, proving themselves and going out of their way to bringing people together.

With all due respect, I believe there are some fundamental problems with both your post and your way of thinking. First, minorities were not the only ones who thought the election might be sabotaged or hi-jacked...was Al Gore a minority? I am sure many Democrats in general were nervous based on the 2000 election.

Just as I cannot presume to know what it feels like to be anyone other than myself, if you are not a minority, I doubt you can fathom the depth of feeling many of us have regarding the election. My mother was part of the Woolworth lunch counter sit ins while she was in college in the 60's. To see an African-American president is not something she ever thought she would see in her lifetime. Having said all that, please don't think this election or this next four years was (or should be) all about race.

As a minority with a college degree, a great job and who is halfway to a Master's degree, I don't think I have anything to prove to anyone. Neither do I believe that anyone who doesn't live up to their potential is in any way pulling Mr. Obama down. The responsibility to bring people together does not rest solely on the shoulders of the minorities in this country. That is everyone's responsibility. Finally, there are so many hard-working honorable people in this country who represent EVERY race. Step outside your box. You may meet a few.

exactly marleysmom - very well put.

listen Harrier, "minorities" - don't have to "prove anything" to anyone - least of all you. "minorities" ALREADY work hard. very hard. every day. to take care of themselves and their loved ones. "minorities" simply need to continue and expand on the good things they're already doing and reduce and eliminate the negative things. same as everyone else.

it's not brain surgery.

reverse proposition 8!!!

Black people need to stop that foolishness. Crying because Obama got elected. Its embarrasing. Black people haven't overcome because Barrack Obama was elected President. In truth, Barrack Obama doesn't even indentify with black people in America. He's not a descendant of our black ancestors who suffered in America under slavery. Afrodescendants or disaporians deserve more than just the election of black president, that's not good enough. I can understand the tears of joy if black people, descendants of slaves in America, were to receive complete Freedom, Justice, Equality, Human Rights, and Reparations (Land and Money).

So Barack isn't a real Black man, huh?

Besides, Will Smith didn't say a word about Obama's being Black. He spoke instead about how Obama had reached him with his statement about the American dream not being fulfilled by American practice. That moved me, too, and applies to all people whose dreams have been stymied because of their gender or race or economic level.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:54 PM on 11/08/2008

He didn't say he wasn't black. He is saying that a child from an Kenyan man is not the same from a black american who had slave ancestors in the USA for generations....

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:22 PM on 11/08/2008

how was your experience being a person of color different from his?

how does your ancestor directly affect how you were treated? how do you know that your ancestors were slaves?

I cried tears of joy when President-elect Obama won on Tuesday. This election represented many things for many people. The resurgence of hope, the introduction of our polictical system to so many who were previously disenfranchised, an end to the Republican rule that has crippled our economy and obliterated our middle class and yes, breaking a barrier long closed to people of color in this country.

You are clearly the one who needs to stop the foolishness. Your comments are simply ignorant and devisive. Who are you to determine who is or is not "authentically" an African-American?
I assume you don't personally know Barack Obama...therefore, how would you know who he identifies with? Based on your post am I to believe that Black people in America all share one mind set and one experience? I doubt it, since you and I certainly think differently.

It would seem you do not understand ANY of it...based on some of your 'misreading' of the indicators. I cried, too - and I am not black. This was a major accomplishment which effects ALL Americans - regardless of their race, creed or color. You just don't get it...and it has nothing to do with 'Land and Money'!

Will's a very funny guy. He adeptly made a lighthearted moment out of a truly historic event. It would be no good if he tried to be sappy.

How dare you doubt that Palin and W could recite the preamble to the constitution.

Of course they can!

Of course you would have to explain to them what it was in short increments of time since they have short attention spans, but eventually they would understand.

palin didn't know what the vice president does, which is in the constitution

didn't know africa was a continent, which there are ONLY 7

didn't know which countries were in nafta...... dosn't know what nafta stands for, or didn't know there were only 3 countries in north america.

highly doubt she's ever even read the preamble

...how dare you doubt that Palin and W could recite the preamble to the Constitution....

Only with considerable patience and true devotion, would Palin or W be able to do this.

Remember that W wipes his ass on the constitution (why memorize something you disregard with such venom) and Palin wouldnt be able to recite this unless it was on
a teleprompter.

Okay, but Smith is awful close to jumping that couch... What is it about $cientology that its most celebrated believers wind up looking silly on Oprah?

So now anyone who is elated and expressive is a Scientologist? I'm not one. I was jumping up and down like a crazy woman when I heard the news. And Will, for those of you that don't have a sense of humor is a comedian. He was poking fun at himself. People, it's time to get rid of your biases.

Love Will Smith!! There are times I still cry tears of joy now.

On Nov 5th, our local paper (Portland, Oregon) "The Oregonian" (who also endorsed Obama) had a FULL FRONT PAGE of Obama. It is a KEEPER!
It was so huge, and hard to scan. I had to scan it in three parts and fit it back together so I could share this with others here:
