I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Will Smith joined Oprah on Thursday and talked about how moved he was when the election was officially called for Barack Obama, even imitating himself bawling on the floor. "Oprah I'm an action hero, I can't be crying on your show," he told her moments before imitating himself sobbing with happiness and falling to the floor. He pulled it together and got serious to talk about how much Obama's speech resonated with him.

Oprah shared her joy yesterday.

I bet Will, like me, knows the Preamble to the Constitution by heart because of SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK! :-D I think he & I are of a certain age!

If I need to remember it, I still honest to God sing the song.

i know it because my 5th grade teacher made the entire class memorize it and recite it in front of the classroom one by one.

Makes me wonder if either Mr. Bush or Ms. Palin could, just off the cuff, recite the Preamble to the Constitution...I'd love to witness that!!!

Governor Bush couldn't even remember "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me" so what makes you think he could remember the preamble to the Constitution? Especially considering his administration has spent the last eight years using it as toilet paper.

Since it's painfully obvious that Ms. Palin has never READ the Constitution... Well, 'nuff said.

That was a beautiful appearance by Will Smith. It shows the depth of love he feels toward this nation and the admirable values we all strive to advance. If only our leadership listens this time...not to the fringe far right which cares about nothing but dividing us. But to the larger group...the progressive moderates like me and almost everyone else who truly want this nation to soar again.

Amen to what Will Smith said. So many have been disillusioned by the actions of the outgoing "leader". I look forward to the day when they will see that Barack Obama iis leading us into that new direction of peace and unity. It will take time, but that is one investment I will gladly make.

Obama's victory is reminiscent of Mandela's. Times are evolving.

I love what Will Smith said about loving his country, not the current state of it, but the hope and possibilities it was founded on.

A few months ago my perpetually pessimistic spouse told me the basic difference between the two of us was that I thought things could be changed in a positive manner, our government 'fixed', and he felt we as a nation were doomed to continue repeating and compounding our mistakes. Then he heard Obama's speech at the DNC and understood why I wanted this so badly. He still felt it could not happen, though.
Through my tears on Tuesday night I asked him if he still thought we were doomed. He shook his head and said "I don't know....maybe you've been right all along." LOL, music to my ears after 22 years.

I love Will Smith and I love Barack Obama (and you too, Oprah!). This is indeed the dawning of a most hopeful and joyous era (I hope).

What's all this fighting about? If any American family thats been in this country long enough, shakes his/her family tree hard enough, a person of another race would fall out. lol Stop fighting.....as Rick James said " It's A Celebration Bitche$" lol

My family tree has a few different leaves, and I couldn't be more proud today that my black and red ancestors may finally be recognized as completely American.

Obama transcends race in a nation where the overwhelming majority of people still believe that there is always a brighter day just ahead.

That is why the sun is always setting on REACTIONARY party policies that only look backward for solutions and never look forward.

However, the glass ceiling still remains. It won't truly be removed until a persons race, creed, color, orientation etc. is no longer mentioned. They didn't announce Bush or any other president as a white person.
With Barack Obama we have a wonderful opportunity to recognize a person entirely upon his or her capabilities, past achievements, intellect, acumen and professed purpose and intents.

Would we be willing to say that a remarkably intelligent black man was elected president and an arrogant white bully will be leaving office?

I would agree that a remarkably intelligent individual was elected President and an arrogant bully will be leaving office. I'd just as soon leave out the "black" and the "white", or "yellow" or "red" or whatever. I understand that in one sense it DOES matter. But in a larger sense it is silly. I still hold deeply to MLK's color-blind society as a moral ought.

BERTRANDRUSSELL-MLK's dream is not for us to be color-blind, but that we would be judged by the content of our character, instead of the color of our skin.

For minorities, this country defines us by our ethnicity, by our identifiable differences (which are more than just skin color as you already know). Consequently, we are forced to think about race all day, every day. So when you say you want to be color blind, and our "color" is a major defining feature of our lives (not THE feature, but a feature), then that means that you want to not see a major part of our experience.

As an excellent, but not famous poet (dahled) has said, "if I'm a person of color, and you say you're color blind, then you can't see me."

Warthog-I don't want my race to be ignored. I'm very proud of it (it's wounds, scars failures & triumphs) I want it to be identified as a component of who I am, not ALL of it. I believe that is what you meant-am i correct?

Reminded of what my parents used to call the "Ultimate Protest Song" that was nothing but the declaration of indepence sung by the Fifth Dimension. Actually, they did a medley, and I don't recall the second song, but I remember the third song - people all over it's so easy to see--people everywhere they just want to be free.

I found the singing of the declaration to be quite stirring as a child. I recall that in high school they decided that school children needed to recite the pledge of allegiance every morning. My very liberal teacher told us that it was optional (it was) although there was a LOT of peer pressure.

Well, one person in my class was Canadian and didn't want to do it. I announced that I would only recite it on those days that I felt that I really meant it. The two kids from Viet Nam were shocked that we would exercise our right to sight out the pledge. I told them that it was a fundamental difference between a dictatorship and a truly free country.

They were shocked to find out that all Americans didn't go to church every Sunday. The Catholic missionaries painted a very different picture for them.

Ttwo weeks later I was feeling especially patriotic and stood up and said the pledge of allegiance with a passion instead of the "normal" boring rote cadence. All week.

Our entire class continued to test the administration's claim that it was voluntary.

1982.
