I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Will Smith joined Oprah on Thursday and talked about how moved he was when the election was officially called for Barack Obama, even imitating himself bawling on the floor. "Oprah I'm an action hero, I can't be crying on your show," he told her moments before imitating himself sobbing with happiness and falling to the floor. He pulled it together and got serious to talk about how much Obama's speech resonated with him.

Oprah shared her joy yesterday.

Yeah, I guess Fox, the GOP and most of the media is WRONG - like they usually are. The US is NOT a racist country. Yes, there ARE racists here, absolutely. But MILLIONS of us voted for a person not based on the color of his skin but what is between his ears and what is in his heart.

Barack Obama was/is the most qualified for the job. I wouldn't have cared if he was pink with purple polka dots I would have voted for him anyway.

I am so proud of this nation. So proud to be one of its citizens. So proud that the majority of us are color blind and embrace diversity.

Now we need to work on the equal rights for same sex couples. They are just like everyone else and they need to be treated like everyone else!!!!

Sorry, but when did the U.S. stop being a racist country?

We took a huge step in the right direction on Nov. 4.

I think that there are plenty of racists out there. I live in Idaho and believe me, they are all around me. That said, I no longer believe we live in a "racist country." There are racists in Canada, Mexico, England, Sweden, Nigeria...in every country. Racism is learned behavior and a disease of the heart, not a national characteristic. New behavior can be learned. Diseases can be cured.

I suppose it might be when, despite the contrary also being true, millions of white people voted with their black and brown brothers and sisters for a bi-racial man, because of what he could do rather than because of what he looked like. Although millions of others voted against him, the polyglot demographic that voted for him proves that racialism was not the reason for his win. It seems probable that of the millions who voted against him, a fair proportion did so because of his skin colour; it seems hard to justify that they voted against him because of policies they hated when those same policies are the only things standing between them and absolute poverty.

One of the most beautiful sights that night was when they announced who our next president will be to the people in Grant Park and a sea of hands were thrown in the air in one expression of jubilance. I'll never forget that. Yup, tearing up again just thinkin' about it.

I can't get over how deeply happy I feel every time I hear the words "President elect Obama". This is the beginning of a wonderful time in the history of this nation and I'm so happy and proud to be a part of it. President Obama has already made such a huge change in the entire world and he hasn't even gotten started yet!

My friend is currently pregnant with a child who will be growing up with a white mother, and a black father who may or may not be in his life. I'm sending her "Dreams From my Father" for Christmas with the instructions to give it to her child when he is old enough to read it.

I'm a guy of 57, and I broke down and cried when it was announced. I was raised to believe that guys do not cry, but I just had to break out of the mode. I still tear up when I think of it. I'm crying right now. What the heck.

Amen to that! My future husband and I (we're gay men who live in NY--fortunately not CA--and will be married in MA next year) were weeping like babies on Tuesday night, along with millions--maybe billions--of others all over the world. It feels like the whole world just won the lottery. We know it's going to be a long, hard road for Obama, but he is so refreshingly wonderful. Watching him, and listening to him, we know that he sees himself as one member of a team; a team that will pick this nation back up, restore our place at the global table and redirect us on the path to fulfilling the potential we've always had but strayed from (greatly) in the last eight years. He has the world behind him---instead of against him as his hopelessly dimwitted and arrogant predecessor unashamedly did--and he, with all our help, is going to do great things.
I am 41 and I have never been, nor did I imagine I ever could be, so happy for and proud of an incoming president.
Congratulations to PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA (boy, does that feel good to write, say and hear!!!!!).

Please know the tears came from all over the world ... we were all crying with joy and celebration !
I'm in New Zealand, and it is our election day today. Funnily enough the last of four very bitter debates between our two major party leaders took place about 60 or so minutes after the acceptance speech. It was so profound, our Prime Minister and her main opponent had the most civil and friendly debate! They both acknowledged later there had been some effect upon them !!! I think maybe we got the first beneficial spinoff from Barack's election -- thank you ! May such wisdom prevail here today ....

Will Smith is truly truly amazing.
I am still tearing up anytime my mind tries to grasp that Barack Obama is indeed our President-elect.

I am so proud that the country has looked at a man and his family, for who they are : PEOPLE like you and me. Nothing else.

I am glad we have elected a man we think will be able, Godwilling, to bring about some pragmatism and action and results and big ideas and big vision to the country.

Now let us all chip in and help him. We are a Union and should work United.

Let us all for a minute, at least for this presidency, forget about democrat, liberal, progressist, conservatist, republican, moderate, YOU NAME IT, and all focus on WHAT IS THE BEST FOR ALL OF US COMBINED.

All of us feel the pinch of hard times in some way. All of us have hope. Let us make it happen.

God bless you all!

We should all hope that Obama succeeds in healing our most grievous wounds left over from the present administrations. Anyone who wants any different is just a masochist and deserves whatever is coming their way. Sorry for being so blunt.

I just hope that those who would destroy us for some type of ideology, don't win. They have done a lot of dirt so far. I just hope that they don't finish the job.

I too teared up at Obama's victory because I felt as if we were coming out of an 8 year tunnel of darkness and into the light.

I just wish Will Smith would leave the macho "A man can't cry" baggage at home.

I've been tearing up for three days now .... everytime I see a video or read the comments of anyone else who was profoundly moved by the events Tuesday night - and I went through half a box of kleenex then!

But, watching this, the FIRST thing I thought of .... when Will Smith started reciting the Preamble, I BET SARAH PALIN COULDN'T DO THAT!!!!

You go Will!!!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:42 PM on 11/07/2008

Please..Do you thnk she even know a Preamble to the Constitution exist if she didn't know Africa is a continent? Just face it.. other that repeating talking points like a parrot and looking good in that new designer wardrobe there is nothing of substance intellectually there.

I am African American but I also have White and Native American blood...I've felt conflicted at times but now feel whole, proud, emotional, inspired and ready to roll up sleeves and work for my country.

To my daughter and granddaughters I say the world is yours...all is possible! YES WE DID!
I worked the polls on Nov 4th and it was White, Black, old, young, Asian, Latino, Republican, Democrat, Green, Independent...coming together for Obama and our country. I am so proud and so restored in my hope and faith.

I am African American & Native American blood ... I have voted for each democratic president since JFK ... although I took that involvement seriously and charished each vote, never have I felt more a part of a presidential election before ! I actually felt/feel included !

My entire family distant & immediate are beaming with smiles and talk of work well done ... we elected the right person for the right job !

Happy days are here ... YES WE CAN !

Doesn't it feel different in our country now? Like the diversity that has always been our strength is somehow more real than it has ever been, more palpable, more fully embraced. I have never felt more proud to be an American. It makes me so happy to say that. I am an American. Haha! Try it!

We did it! I am still high about this, three days on. After 8 years of an orangutan and his thugs running our country, having an intelligent, capable, charismatic leader feels so good... and add to this feeling the historic nature and symbolic importance of his election to the Presidency and I am one happy guy!

CBone,

Good for you... really. The orangutans are still out there. They are not going to go away. We have to be forever vigilant.

The thugs have raped this country for the last eight years, and you see what they have left us. I wish us luck in cleaning up this mess.

If Bush was a smarter person, he could have prevented this. We now see what electing a learning disabled president has brought down on us. I hope... I really hope that we have learned our lesson. I'm just afraid that history, as they say, has a way of repeating itself.

As a footnote: We tried to elect a not so smart president again. McCain graduated at the bottom of his class at Annapolis. What the h#ll is with this cr@p? And then there was Palin. What the F@ck is going on? Sorry for getting carried away. Hope you understand,

I know you guys are not going to let this through :)

You're not alone. Since Senator Obama won the election that's all I have been doing is tearing up. During Senator Obama's televised conference, one of our building operations employee's was trying to spread hate and anger. Did I say that I work in law enforcement (civilian). Many of our officers and detectives are showing their true colors about Senator Obama as our President-elect. Not surprised, see my logged in name. Tells it all.
