Front Pages World Newspapers

The reaction of the world's newspapers - from India to Italy - to Barack Obama's victory was largely jubilant.

There were a few exceptions: Iran's conservative newspaper, Jam-e-Jam, featured a foreboding photo of Obama with his back turned. And Italy's Libero featured a crude caricature of Obama with extra-large lips.

Watch a slideshow of front pages from a selection of the world's newspapers:

if it was the wrong link, my apologies... i just copied what was in the URL window of my browser... but there's no reason to behave like a jerk.

I see there are two papers from Italy and the last photo headline (Corriere Della Sera) shows the Obamas in a better light. The over the top cartoony one doesn't look like it's a front page headline. Just an observation. Is the 'Libero' paper a mainstream newspaper? Overall, headlines are positive world wide.

I wouldn't worry too much. Italy has a record of changing governments as frequently as we change our clothes. He won't be in office much longer.

You've obviously never watched an Italian soccer game. When a black player touches the ball the Italian fans jump up and down like monkeys and make grunting sounds. At Lazio games they've been known to pull out bananas when Africans do something well on the field. Their fans routinely show Nazi salutes during games and last year a Lazio player gave a Nazi facist salute after scoring a goal. There may be no more racist place on earth.

As an Italian from Italy I take offense to that....yes, soccer stadiums in Italy are full of racist scum and trash, you will not see a decent Italian citizen at a game, I myself watch the games on TV....PLEASE DON'T GENERALIZE...the Italians who voted for Berlusconi are deeply regretting it now and since Italian Governments do not last very long the center-left will soon be governing again. Most Italian newspaper had wonderful front pages the day after the elections and in a survey 83% of Italians would have voted for Obama if they could.

That's the thing about history. We have to do the right things now that can lead to a better place later, even if we're not there to see it.

MLK knew he wouldn't get there, but that didn't diminish his commitment to doing everything he could in his present. And this is not the end-point for us either, but an incredible viewpoint along the way where people can catch a refreshed glimpse of what we can do (yes we can).

That's the difference between Conservatives and Liberals (well, not the ONLY thing, but one of the BIG things); they're trying to recreate (their mythical version of) yesterday, today, while we're using today to make a better tomorrow. They just can't see that far.

Perceptive and accurate.
There is utility in both approaches, since improvement requires understanding of the past.

Cool to see the world reacting and recognizign our elections. Now if only we Americans could even bother to know who the PM of Canada, or any other major country is, and ge as excited about their elections, then we will have become part of the world.

All of my Italian-American friends voted for Obama. But this radical right-wing of Italy's government seems to have hijacked Italy like Bush did to America. Are the seeing Obama as a threat? Do they really want to start war with us? The Italian government better get their act together.

Incredibly, one newspaper in America refused to report that Barack Obama won the election at all. The Terrell Times in Terrell, Texas. here is a link to the video report on WFAA TV in Dallas.
http://www.wfaa.com/video/index.html?nvid=300810&she=1
The newspapers publisher says "We run a newspaper, not a memory book service," he said. "We covered the local commissioner's race. We thought that was more important."

Texas? Remember these brainless people voted for Bush and put him in the W.H. twice. Maybe this newspaper should be exempted from any benefits coming from an Obama-Biden administration.

I saw that last night on the news, and hate to say I wasn't surprised.

I'm from Dallas, and no one really talks about Terrell outside of going for fairs or big outdoor events. Their two biggest celebrities are a female Olympic athlete and of course, Academy Award Winner Jamie Foxx. With them having two black celebrities from their town, you'd think they'd realize that they have diversity and should celebrate this joyous moment.

Only in Texas.

Berlusconi is a clown (I am Italian and did NOT vote him) and the only reason he won this past election is because he ran together with the Northern League and the extreme right . Did anybody know that one of the heads of the extreme right party is A. Mussolini?....yes, Mussolini's granddaughter.....As I have experienced in my life, everything is cyclical, Italian are now realizing their mistake and paying the price....but that is part of freedom too.

Alex, I'm not defending Berlusconi. But he makes that comment and everybody criticizes him. Yet, Chavez in Venezuela doesn't or can't call Obama by his name. He just says the 'black guy this', 'the black guy that' and nobody criticizes him like they do the Italian leader. All I ask is no DOUBLE STANDARD, please.

Stemboat...I don't disagree with you but I have come to expect more from Italian politicians. Italy is among the strongest US allies and has had a great relashionship with the USA. Italian soldiers are still in Iraq and Afghanistan side by side with American ones and although they have not had the casualties America has suffered, they have lost soldiers too (I say "they" because after 18 years in the USA I feel deeply American even if I carry duals citizenship and vote at both countries elections). I simply expect more respect and judgement from Italian politicians, we all know what to expect from Chavez....

We have friends in Italy who are overjoyed at O b a m a 's election. They say they didn't vote for B e r l u s c o n i (and I believe them) and they laugh because they say at this point in time no one will admit that they voted for him. B e r l u s c o n i owns much of the media in Italy and it's reflected in what people are shown there in newspapers, radio, and television. Freedom of the press in Italy is a joke at this point. I only hope they can do something about it.
