Defense Secretary Robert Gates is often mentioned as a potential Bush 43 holdover in the new Obama administration. According to most reports, Gates is not only popular among the service branches, but also with Democrats, who have appreciated the secretary's moderate instincts during his time at the helm following Donald Rumsfeld.

But not everyone is sold on the idea. One former high-ranking defense official now advising Obama told the Huffington Post that keeping Gates around is "the dumbest thing I've ever heard." The former official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he has told the Obama transition team as much.

"Most people don't realize that you can't just keep Gates," the former official said. "You've gotta keep some part of his team. We're not going to keep Gates and then appoint a new deputy, a whole new staff." The official, who spoke from personal experience within the bureaucracy, said that as an administrator, "you need your own people. And a lot of those people [under Gates] were neoconservative architects of the [Iraq] war."

The official cited in particular Defense Department undersecretary for policy Eric Edelman as a key assistant to Gates who should not remain in an Obama administration. Edelman, a former aide to Vice President Dick Cheney from 2001 to 2003, courted controversy last year when he criticized Sen. Hillary Clinton's position on the Iraq war for "reinforc[ing] enemy propaganda."

Recently-retired Army officer Bob Mackey said that the concern over Gates's staff had some merit, but might not be too difficult for the Obama transition team to address, should they decide to keep Gates in his post. "It all depends what level [of assistants] we're talking about," Mackey said, agreeing with the former defense official that Gates's "undersecretaries and assistant undersecretaries, you'd need to replace those people."

However, Mackey argued, the benefits of keeping Gates might be worth that trouble. "The argument, besides the fact that everybody likes Gates, is 'don't change boats in midstream.' He's actually listened to the commanders in field, instead of battling them back and forth."

Mackey also said Gates could be a serviceable interim secretary until retired four-star Gen. Anthony Zinni is available to serve in 2010 (since he only retired from the military in 2000). "Zinni's the guy you really want in there," Mackey said.

The former defense official, by contrast, had another person in mind for the department. "I would push [Sen. Chuck] Hagel. He's very well qualified," the official said. "And again, Obama's talked about being bipartisan. But the best thing would be the fact that he was an enlisted soldier in Vietnam. Think of the message would send to our young troops. Plus, he has management experience: he was number two in the VA and he started his own company [in the private sector]. It's not like this is a guy who's never managed anything."

As for another rumored DOD short-lister, former Navy Secretary Richard Danzig, the source said he could make a good choice as well. "But again, the question is in terms of that signal that you send. You and I know who Richard is, but what about people around the world? What you want to do with Cabinet selections is send a signal about what you want to do."

isnt he the guy who recieved all the NIL intel on iraqs wmds and then, in front of america, sold the nation the lies of iraq having wmds, where all of theose wmds were and convinced the nation that mobile trucks were biological weapons manufacturing labs.
This guy was part of the propoganda that led to the deaths of over a million innocent Iraqis.
Now how in any way is he "good"?

I've never been convinced tha Rumsfeld and Canbom have not retained a continuity of influence into the DOD. They're all tied to Cheney. I don't trust any of them. Clean out the Pentagon, There are very qualified people to take over. Bush Sr. and James Baker reccomended Gates. Why would we want that influence to remain any longer than necessary? Gates hasn't done anything other than agree with Bush about Iraq. Give him the boot.

I was scratching my head on retaining Gates until I read something recently that pointed out it could be really bad for Obama to tackle a major economic crisis with an all new cast of economic players AND at the same time make changes at the Pentagon during two wars. Essentially, this commentator wrote that it could be biting off more than any new president could chew, so it made sense, he wrote, that Gates may stay in place for awhile. Which, by the way, that's all I've heard is that it would be a temporary thing, not a permanent appointment. After I looked at it that way, it makes sense. Obama has a lot on his plate. He's got to prioritize. Having stability could be good. After all, by all accounts Gates isn't so bad, is his BOSS who sucks at his job.

It's quite simple now, (it's my idea)
Obama has to bring back Powell to clean the Irak mess he's put there...
Yeep!

Well..since this is the first leak from within a team that has been top notch so far...he has to be found and fired. The leaker is apparently sub-standard compared to the other staffers.. she/he does not share Pres-Elect Obama's vision nor do they have his best interest at heart.

Find them , bounce them.

No Drama Team Obama....it ain't broke, so don't let this clown try to fix it.

I recall that the one great pillar of Barack Obama's campaign was change, meaning sweeping all-new people into Washington to implement all-new policies in line with whatever his supporters imagined he would put in place. So far he has: 1) used huge campaign money to drive all opponents out of the primary race; 2) pick a 36 year Washington insider as VP; 3) use even more money to crush McCain; 4) pick an extreme partisan Dem congressman as chief of staff; 5) float the idea of keeping on Bush's Defense Secretary; 6) select a team of economic advisors straight out of Bill Clinton's administration. Stay tuned - more to come!

In case you haven't noticed, he's the President Elect. He can pick whoever the hell he wants. You seriously want to put Alberto Gonzalez and the past 8 years up against what Obama has done so far?! Widen your narrow view. You want change? He'll make an effort to get us out of Iraq. You want change? Three days after the election he's talking about ways to fix the economy. Where is our President Puxatawney Phil?! He hasn't stuck his out of his hole for awhile. You want change? He's going to reinstate the Bush tax cuts which will help our national budget somewhat and give middle class tax payers a break. I'll forgive Biden. I'm glad he picked Emanuel - he's got to have someone in that role he trusts and he doesn't have to clear it with ANYONE. Change is coming. Stay tuned - more to come!

You have listed all the things that you believe Obama will do. I listed what he has done so far. Now that the long, long, long campaign is over, reality sets in. Obama ran as the great agent of change - like a million politicians before him - but so far has acted like an agent of pragmatism. Like greatness, some people are born to change things, some achieve change, and the rest have change thrust upon them. Things will certainly change over the next 4 or 8 years, but maybe not the way he or his supporters imagine.

Obama: don't think you have to appease the old guard. Dump Gates. You have enough people expecting you to really be an agent for change here, rolling back on all the spying, fearmongering, fantasy-based policy making and the like. Don't hamstring yourself by accepting a cuckoo's egg here or in any other of your team choices.
You need to roll back on FISA, on engagement in the illegal wars, the torture, etc. You need to cut the military spending and make the USA safe through diplomacy, re-instating human rights, fighting corruption and getting the economy back on track. Not by digging a bigger hole with the stupid Manifest Destiny and imperialist crap.

I have a small quibble:

Former Gen. Mackey says that Gen. Zinni can't be SecDef until he's been out for ten years -- huh? Is that a rule or law written down somewhere? And if that's the case, how was former Gen. Colin Powell able to become Secretary of State?

Mr. Walls, if you're confused, too, please ask him. Or if someone here on the blog can explain .. please! :)

Hi,
Late to this one. The answer is no, no serving military officer can be SecDef for ten years--you can be President, or Sec State or anything else, but not Sec Def (Title 10 USC, Sect 113).

Wonderful! Anonymous sources saying things to stir people up for no reason. Gotta love 'change'.

Gates has kept a level head about everything. Keep Gates on for the time being and make the transition as smooth as possible in the arena of Defense. Hagel has got to be utilized somewhere in the future....at least I hope he steers the Republican party in a new direction of non-cuckooness.

What about Colin Powell(sic)? Hopefully, Republican or not, he will end up somewhere in the administration.

Forgive me a little musing, but on this page is the opportunity to take an IQ test. Says average IQ has been 118. I've read previously that Sarah Palin's IQ is 116.....this may be only amusing to me.
