Defense Secretary Robert Gates is often mentioned as a potential Bush 43 holdover in the new Obama administration. According to most reports, Gates is not only popular among the service branches, but also with Democrats, who have appreciated the secretary's moderate instincts during his time at the helm following Donald Rumsfeld.

But not everyone is sold on the idea. One former high-ranking defense official now advising Obama told the Huffington Post that keeping Gates around is "the dumbest thing I've ever heard." The former official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he has told the Obama transition team as much.

"Most people don't realize that you can't just keep Gates," the former official said. "You've gotta keep some part of his team. We're not going to keep Gates and then appoint a new deputy, a whole new staff." The official, who spoke from personal experience within the bureaucracy, said that as an administrator, "you need your own people. And a lot of those people [under Gates] were neoconservative architects of the [Iraq] war."

The official cited in particular Defense Department undersecretary for policy Eric Edelman as a key assistant to Gates who should not remain in an Obama administration. Edelman, a former aide to Vice President Dick Cheney from 2001 to 2003, courted controversy last year when he criticized Sen. Hillary Clinton's position on the Iraq war for "reinforc[ing] enemy propaganda."

Recently-retired Army officer Bob Mackey said that the concern over Gates's staff had some merit, but might not be too difficult for the Obama transition team to address, should they decide to keep Gates in his post. "It all depends what level [of assistants] we're talking about," Mackey said, agreeing with the former defense official that Gates's "undersecretaries and assistant undersecretaries, you'd need to replace those people."

However, Mackey argued, the benefits of keeping Gates might be worth that trouble. "The argument, besides the fact that everybody likes Gates, is 'don't change boats in midstream.' He's actually listened to the commanders in field, instead of battling them back and forth."

Mackey also said Gates could be a serviceable interim secretary until retired four-star Gen. Anthony Zinni is available to serve in 2010 (since he only retired from the military in 2000). "Zinni's the guy you really want in there," Mackey said.

The former defense official, by contrast, had another person in mind for the department. "I would push [Sen. Chuck] Hagel. He's very well qualified," the official said. "And again, Obama's talked about being bipartisan. But the best thing would be the fact that he was an enlisted soldier in Vietnam. Think of the message would send to our young troops. Plus, he has management experience: he was number two in the VA and he started his own company [in the private sector]. It's not like this is a guy who's never managed anything."

As for another rumored DOD short-lister, former Navy Secretary Richard Danzig, the source said he could make a good choice as well. "But again, the question is in terms of that signal that you send. You and I know who Richard is, but what about people around the world? What you want to do with Cabinet selections is send a signal about what you want to do."

He used to be my boss. He didn't do anything that adversely affected the rank and file employees.

So...

You choose leaders for their vision and getting the job done......one of the critical jobs, by the way, is to get out of Iraq.

Sec. Gates is an unsung hero. He neutralized Cheney & kept that nitwit Bush from bombing TEHRAN. He deserves the trust he has won from military & State alike, if not the Medal of Freedom. Keep him on for 2 years. He is a good guy.

I really think keeping Gates is a bad idea. I'm certain that there are many other qualified candidates who would more than fit the bill. Let's remember one thing, Gates was not brought in to replace Rumsfeld by Bush because Gates would disagree with the President ... "W" doesn't tolerate dissention well. I think a fresh start would be better in the office of SecDef so the Administration is on the same page from the start.

Who started this Gates staying on rumor in the first place?

I think Gates should be replace by Wesley Clark. The new admin should put new people in wherever possible - with new ideas and not those of the previous admin.

So VP-elect Joe Biden was a bad choice because he also wanted Obama's job?

General Clark would be an excellent choice.

if obama kicks out everyone who doesnt share his ideas, he would be no different from bush. you need diversity of ideas to make good decisions.

furthermore, ideas are one thing, getting them executed is another. . . some of these people might be able to execute things that some fresh off the boat kid wouldn't.

Gates has not been terrible but look what he had to follow. Forrest Gump would look good compared to Rumsfeld, although Gates himself has said that he isn't or may not be interested in staying on. I like the Hagel pick if he would accept it. Former enlisted man who would actually fight for the rights of the rank and file military who have served us so admirably unlike the lip service they have received from the current administration. In addition he has strong ties with Capitol hill to help push reform. Neocons definitely need to go regardless, they have done enough damage.

i don't trust Gates he is a former Director of the CIA. H e could stay for 6 months but fire all his under secretaries because they are all hawks/neo-cons. Anthony Zinni would be a fine choice Marine 4 star General and he has some amazing views on America and dealing with the Middle east. Chuck Hagel would be a solid choice as well.

We could do a lot worse than Gates, it's a tough job but Eric Edelman has to go, and maybe Wesley Clark or Bill Cohen or Hagel could replace him, then be in place to move up as Gates replacement, but it might be nice to have a Democrat as Defense Secretary...

Robert W. Gates and Iran Contra:

http://www.fas.org/irp/offdocs/walsh/chap_16.htm

Gates is an expert at lying just enough, but not enough to be prosecuted. His actions, time and again, prove that he is more loyal to Papa Bush, going back to his days in the CIA, than he will ever be loyal to the rule of law.

Anyone who thinks Barak Obama is dumb hasn't been paying attention.
Gates has shown some ability to think independently and rationally under Bush. Granted, some of his staff are ideologues to put it mildly. However keeping him in office to direct them to implement Obama's policy, if it is significantly different, has a nice irony to it. The "Pottery Barn" effect, if you will. If Obama's policy is not very different from Bush's for defense, and indications are that it may not be, then it makes sense to keep people on the job who are familiar with what has happened and is planned.

I disagree on this one. I think, given the mess Rumsfeld left, Gates is doing a pretty good job.

I voted for Obama because he is intelligent and pragmatic. I will trust him to chose as he sees fit.

That's not how this government is supposed to work. We are supposed to trust the rule of law, and we are supposed to make sure that the president upholds the rule of law. Obama knows this, and we all need to do our part and examine his decisions. That is the way this democracy is supposed to work.

If Obama is looking for somebody with enourmous credibility to provide some good political cover to withdrawing from Iraq, Hagel would be great.

But if you are looking for somebody to drag the Pentagon into the 21st Century, there is only one person who has the intelligence, credibility, experience, and ideas -- Richard Danzig.

And, one note on Wes Clark... If Obama is all about "no drama," Clark would be a living nightmare. His term as SECDEF would be one long photo-op/press conference/world tour fiasco.

He would be the biggest military diva since General MacArthur.
