Politico:

South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint is pushing his party's leadership to expel Sen. Ted Stevens from the Senate during this month's "lame duck" session, according to people familiar with his plans.

DeMint, one of the most conservative members of the Senate, is said to be angry with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for tolerating a convicted felon in the GOP caucus.

Stevens is a convicted felon, a senator can not be a felon. Boot Stevens out now or accept the moniker "the Grand Old Felon Party".

De Mint's only interest is the fact Stevens is a moderate, and they HATE moderates more than Democrats. he could care less if he was innocent or guilty.

Stevens is moderate? On what planet do you live? Stevens might be moderate compared to someone on the lunatic fringe of the GOP but he isnt' a moderate.

If the GOP wants to repair its brand, they could start by not tolerating the culture of cronyism and corruption that has flourished under Bushco rule, and remove this guy.

Something tells me that they won't.

Righteous indignation is blasphemy coming from a Republican.

Nah... let them keep Stevens. We need constant reminders of how corrupt the Republicans are.

When I was a kid in North Dakota, Senator Langer ("Wild Bill") was re-elected to his seat from a prison cell where he was serving time for a corruption conviction. Bill endeared himself to the voters by
such acts as providing the farmers with hard to find cotton gloves during the WW II years. For some reason his image did not seem as slimy as that or Senator Stevens.

Where was this demented guy DeMint when it counted during the election process? This is all posturing now that Republicans are running for cover anyway they can.

Isn't Ted Stevens your run-of-the-mill multiply-convicted Republican felon?

And law on this situ is . . . . . ?

The good news for old Ted is Bubba won't touch him once in the slam. Too wrinkled.

heh

Stevens is a FELON. Try to imagine some minority version of Joe the Plumber claiming he's not REALLY a felon, that he was wrongfully accused, and should therefore retain his right to vote and to function in society like law-abiding citizens do. Off to the slammer THIS guy goes! But Stevens is "royalty" - a man of position and stature, we don't DARE treat him like the felon he is...

Remove this stain on the GOP's dwindling reputation.

Stevens is old. Let the man retire to his home and get some rest. Go hunting or something. People get in the senate and age to 95 and still want to run. Heck, they fall asleep doing the votes.

It's very disappointing that Alaskans chose to re-elect the wretched Ted Stevens. Now it will be up to the GOP in the Senate to send him packing - preferably on "a bridge to nowhere...." The question is whether Gov. Palin will appoint herself as his replacement.

While it's equally disappointing that the voters in Kentucky wimped out and gave that smug thug, Mitch McConnell six more years to do heavy-handed damage in the Senate.

Now, while I'm not holding my breath about the run-off election in Georgia - Georgians have a chance to redeem themselves after Saxby Chambliss's obscene hatchet job on Max Cleland.

And while I don't have any special gripes against Norm Coleman - we need every vote we can get - so I hope he falls by the wayside... (Alas, there are some undeserving casualties like Gordon Smith, Chris Shays, Lincoln Chaffee - but that's how it goes sometimes - and at least they didn't have to give up their lives for a hopeless cause like say, Iraq...)

It's hard to cast the first stone in a place like Alaska-the rape capital of the United States. So, I am not surprised that he will be voted in. The idea, though, is for him to win, the Palin will appoint a replacement in exchange for a potential gubernitorial pardon (depending on her political aspirations).

She CAN'T pardon him... it's FEDERAL crime he's been convicted of. Only the Chimperor could pardon him, and I don't think he will... he'll be too busy with his own, and for shooter and Scooter, and the rest of the Neo's.

Well, well, well...no sooner does mcconnell barely get re-elected than he changes his tune...before it was a definite yes on expulsion...NOW he has added "we will wait until after the appeals process".

Quick footnote: stevens claming that he hasn't been convicted because he is appealing. meaning, an appeal means you aren't convicted ?

wow...someone should tell that to all of the inmates who are incarcerated and awaiting their appeal hearings...they'd be happy to know that this was law !

Hehehe...this could be a huge wedge issue in the gop...and the idiots...we are watching them literally east their remaining limbs off.

stevens being stevens...no concept at all that he is helping to cannibalize the remains of his own party...mcconnell being mcconnell...a mealy-mouthed, indecisive lightweight who doesn't realize his actions put him in serious jeapordy of a challenge to his minority leader position come January...
Demint being the first of the gop to firmly plant on one side of the issue...there'll be more...

and BOXER chairs the ethics committee.....(!)

yep...this is downright fun....

She could resign as governor and the lieutenant governor takes over and then appoints her to the senate without the two year wait. Just wait and see on that move.

I hope she does exactly what you say. Remember, she came onboard as the Washington outsider who was going to whip those insiders in shape and show them a thing or two. If she allows her ego to make that move, do you think those insiders are going to let her play? No way, she will make her first statement in front of Congress and will be immediately censored by both parties.

I understand that following the Murkowski self appointment debacle a few years back, Alaska has done away with the self appointment business. Palin won't be appointing anyone to do anything.
Grandpa needs to go. The precedent this sets is intolerable, a convicted felon not in jail, but, rather, sitting in congress.
I mean, really- WTF?
Granddaddy stays? I'm waiting for the local court to be jam packed with convicts looking for release.
