Politico:

South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint is pushing his party's leadership to expel Sen. Ted Stevens from the Senate during this month's "lame duck" session, according to people familiar with his plans.

If they kick him out of the Senate and Palin elects herself to that position, Alaska law states that she would have to go up for reelection in 2 years.

well...it may be all moot since Begich may have won.

But...in the unlikely even of not....stevens is a goner, no question...so the issue becomes...does alaska have ANY gop'er who could conceivably hold that seat come '10 ????

doubt it...

Alaska bars felons from voting, if their crime is one of "moral turpitude", as in "contrary to community standards of justice, honesty or good morals", One would think fraud, false pretenses, and perjury would fall under this statute. At least the felonious old dinosaur shouldn't have been allowed to vote for himself.

Honor is an ancient concept that would prevent one from holding office in the face of even the appearance of impropriety. Stevens' actions and attitudes speak for themselves. No democratic society should tolerate would-be leaders of his ilk.

The cold can have a negative effect on the cognitive function of the brain. Look no further than the people of Alaska, who voted in Stevens and Palin. At least a reasonable explanation.
What is the Senate GOP's excuse? Keep the felon on to protect partisan interests? Oh well, guess some things will never "change".

First COUNT ALL THE VOTES. Prove who won.

Only then worry about Stevens.

On one hand, I'm scared if they decide to not expel him (a convicted felon govering is just scary in itself) then on the other hand it's scary if he gets expelled. How much more scary would it get with Palin in the Senate????

It's either him or governor palin. I'd stick with Ted. He was a good man once, but was corrupted by the neocon tidal wave. He should have exited a long time ago before his party took a hard right turn to insanity.

Rumors are circulating that he will either resign or be forced to resign by his Senate colleagues. The governor of Alaska is then permitted to appoint a replacement. Legally, the governor could appoint herself. A perfect way for Queen S..P.. to keep herself in the limelight. Wagers this will happen are now being taken.

I thought it was an insult to his constituents that he remained in the race but since they elected him... and 84 year old convicted felon, I would like to now insult them. You are idiots, what were you thinking ??

It is tragic that Stevens does not have the decency and dignity to resign after his 7 count felony convictions. It was not 7 mistamenors Senator. Each count carries 5 years possible jail time times 7 = possible 35 years and you are 84 years old. 119 years of age should be old enough to know what a gift is and what it is not.

Having a convicted felon in the senate will make future confirmation hearings funny:

Sen: Isn't true you once [insert objectionable behavior]?

Applicant: *shrug* well you have a convicted felon sitting on the senate, whats the big deal with [questioned objectionable behavior]?

the only difference between stevens and the other 99 is that they haven't been prosecuted yet.

Apparently the voting system in Alaska is tainted....and is why he is ahead. Gee, big surprise there!

If Republicans are actually serious about repairing their tarnished brand, at least 10 of them will join the Democrats in kicking this pathetic old crooked f a r t out.
It remains to be seen if they're serious, though.
