ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin called her critics cowards and jerks Friday for deriding her anonymously and insisted she never asked for the expensive wardrobe purchased for her use on the presidential campaign.

"I never asked for anything more than a Diet Dr. Pepper once in a while," Palin said as she returned to the governor's office from her two-month odyssey as the GOP vice presidential nominee. She said the Republican National Committee paid for the tens of thousands of dollars in designer clothes and accessories.

"Those are the RNC's clothes. They're not my clothes. I never forced anybody to buy anything," she said.

Republican Party lawyers are still trying to determine exactly what clothing was purchased for Palin at such high-end stores as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, what was returned and what has become of the rest.

She particularly lashed out at the anonymous Republican campaign sources cited in a Fox News report who said she did not know Africa was a continent, not a country, and could not name the three countries in the North American Free Trade Agreement _ Canada, the United States and Mexico.

"I consider it cowardly" that they did not allow their names to be used, she said.

Palin said those allegations aren't true. She recalled discussing Africa and NAFTA with aides who prepared her for the vice presidential debate with Democrat Joe Biden.

"If there are allegations based on questions or comments that I made in debate prep about NAFTA, and about the continent vs. the country when we talk about Africa there, then those were taken out of context," she said. "That's cruel, It's mean-spirited. It's immature. It's unprofessional and those guys are jerks if they came away with it, taking things out of context and then tried to spread something on national news. It's not fair, and it's not right."

Palin also said she would not call on Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, to resign, although last month, before his re-election bid, she said he should "step aside" and "play a very statesmanlike role in this now." Stevens, 84, was found guilty on seven counts of trying to hide more than $250,000 in free home renovations and other gifts that he received from a wealthy oil contractor.

Three days after the election, Stevens, the longest serving Republican in Senate history, is about 3,500 votes ahead of Democratic challenger Mark Begich with thousands of absentee ballots to be counted in the next two weeks.

Said Palin on Friday: "The Alaska voters have spoken and me not being a dictator, won't be telling anyone what to do."

When asked if she would call on him to resign, Palin said: "Not after the will of the people has been made manifest via that vote."

Meanwhile, RNC lawyers are discussing with Palin whether what's left of the clothing and accessories purchased for her on the campaign trail will go to charity, back to stores or be paid for by Palin, a McCain-Palin campaign official said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the campaign hadn't authorized comment.

The sorting should be completed in the next four or five days, the campaign official said, declining to say whether the RNC was sending anyone to Alaska to help take inventory.

The RNC spent at least $150,000 on designer clothing, accessories and beauty services for Palin after she became John McCain's running mate in September. The spending included $75,062 at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis; $49,425 at Saks Fifth Avenue; $9,447 at Macy's; and $789 at the luxury retailer Barneys New York. Some of the purchases were for Palin family members, such as $4,902 spent at upscale men's clothier Atelier and $92 at Pacifier, a Minneapolis baby boutique.

The McCain-Palin campaign said about a third of the clothing was returned immediately because it was the wrong size, or for other reasons. However, other purchases were apparently made after that, the campaign official said.

The spending drew a complaint against Palin and the RNC by a Washington government watchdog group. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission accusing Palin and the GOP of violating a federal ban on the use of campaign funds for personal expenses such as clothing.

The RNC didn't respond to repeated requests by The Associated Press for comment Friday.

It's routine for candidates to get professional hair and makeup services at campaign expense before they go on camera, but Palin's shopping spree at GOP donors' expense is unusual. It contrasted with the down-to-earth "hockey mom" image that Palin sought to craft and gave the campaign unwanted publicity in the form of newspaper headlines, Internet chatter and comedians' jokes.

FEC spokesman Bob Biersack declined to comment on the spending beyond confirming that the commission has received CREW's complaint.

The web site for the Federal Election Commission is incorrectly listed at www.fec.org when it is actually www.fec.gov.

I hope you all realize that Sarah makes sure she gets revenge on those who have crossed her. So far there have been about 145 million scurrilous attacks upon her on the internet. I wouldn't be surprised if she is already working her way through the list.

Fortunately it appears she hasn't learned the alphabet beyond "H" so I'm safe. *whew!*

Revenge? She can come down here if she likes. We have a LOT of remote places, and a LOT of old mine shafts that really do need filling with useless objects! =)

I'm struck by the fact that she actually admitted that she didn't know which the three coutries in the North American Free Trade Agreement where, and that Africa is a continent not a country, before her debate with Biden..
taken out of context, so she didn't know pre-prep for the debate, but did know once they told her.. post-prep!..
very scary if you ask me that someone that ignorant was even considered for the position as VP

she only RECALLS having this conversation with aides... that is funny.

I am weary of Sarah Palin news. Enough! Much is more important than this foolish , self-important woman.

After all the garbage Palin dished on Obama, she now cries unfair when dished on her. Karma is great.

Heard more of the broadcast: "We're raised up here to know that, yeah, you talk about equality, you see equality in Alaska. And so that's a good question because I think that was a bit of a surprise on a national level is, what, you mean the other forty nine states aren't quite there like Alaskans are, well come on, follow Alaska's lead and start allowing the equal opportunities and equal treatment."

Aside from the fact that insulting the other 49 states is hardly the way to launch yourself into a national political career, I don't think I'd hold up Alaska as an example of greater political and social rectitude. IIRC, during the campaign it was revealed that Alaska has the highest per capita rate of both rape and incest, how exactly is that, much less making rape victims pay for their own rape kits, providing equal opportunity and treatment for women? Aside from that, the only equality I can see is the apparent willingness of a certain percentage of the population to embrace and re-elect crooks, thugs and convicted felons to positions of political power. THAT kind of equal opportunity we in the rest of the country will gladly forego.

"Palin Calls Her Critics "Jerks," "Cowardly"

Well, I suppose that's just more proof that Palin is indeed the prototypical Republican.

In other words, world champions of projection.

I just heard her comments again. Gets more and more ridiculous with every hearing. Since the mean nasty press relies on anonymous reports, there's no way I can respond to these attacks. In other words, since I don't know who ratted me out, I don't know who to attack and smear their reputation. I can't respond to these allegations since I don't know who's behind them. Excuse me, either its true or false, doesn't matter who made the claim, and frankly, if I was the person who dropped the dime, I wouldn't be eager to come forward for your allies and Hannity and Limbaugh to attack me like they did Colin Powell. Heard of Operation Leper?

I also note that she says what else can McCain and I do but deny these false allegations. I note that McCain hasn't claimed these were lies, he hasn't rushed to your defense.

Often, people of flawed character lash out most stongly at others in criticizing characteristics which they themselves possess because when they see it it unconsciously hits them hard at home. Palin would know this if she'd have attended her Psych 101 classes at one of her seven colleges. Her accusations of cowardise are therefore predicatable and laughable, coming from someone who cowardly besmirsched her opponent of "paling around with terrorists."

Palin used name calling from the time she joined the campaign. That is obviously her campaign style and method of choice. When one runs out of or has no truthful argument, one usually resorts to name calling. That is learned in kindergarten 101.

Since this is about as far as Palin obviously got in learning about the world, it seems perfectly logical that she would resort to such tactics.

And to clear up another comment by another reader - the Telegraph is one of the most respected newspapers in the UK and is not comparable to the National Enquirer- those newspapers are the SUN and the Daily Mirror.

We cannot afford to have Sarah Palin in our political system.

I am not a fan of Palin. I think she was a terrible pick. McCains body language spoke volumes in the last month of the campaign. It was quite clear there were issues. I do, however, think it is just one more example of the shamefully nasty campaign of John McCain that he would throw Ms Palin undeer the straight talk express. Senator McCain needs to man up and take some responsibility for his loss to Obama. He was on the wrong side of so many issues; that's why he lost. Palin is not one to go down easy. She will bone up on the issues, and she will be back. God help us

Much as I'm not a fan of McCain, I have to disagree. I don't think he threw her under the bus, or blames her for his loss. He was extremely generous to her at the concession speech, if it had been me, after all she's pulled, after the last campaign appearance, I would have told her and her family to find their own way home and I never would have allowed her to be present at the concession, much less said something nice about her. He would have done his country a better service if after the election he had gone public with his objections to her, and why he made such a terrible mistake in picking her in the first place, but his feelings are probably a little raw to do that.

In your wildest dreams! She might learn a few more facts, but let's face it., she's not somehow gonna get smarter, is she? We won't be seeing Sister Sarah on the national political stage again.

She won't bone up on the issues because she has no interest in learning. She was auditioning ( yes, auditioning) for the vp slot for quite some time. You'd think she would've started starting cramming day and night but she is way too self-important for that. If she tries it again we'll be better prepared for her with the Couric interviews and SNL skits to replay.

She lives in her own reality. Remember when she said she was exonerated of any wrong doing with Troopergate, when all a person had to do was read the report to see she was lying.

Babble, babble, babble. She doesn't make any sense. Ouch! My head hurts trying to comprehend.
