I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Val Kilmer

Val Kilmer. By cellphone from Bulgaria, he said: "There's sort of a rumor around that I'm maybe thinking about running to be governor of New Mexico? Well, it's sort of true. It's been my home 25 years. I really love my state. Poor, hardworking, decent people - Native Americans, carpenters, artists, expats mixed in with hundreds of the world's smartest physicists at Los Alamos. I've always thought of myself as functioning as a candidate for them.

"The media interests me and it's influenced politicians since the '60s, and I'm approaching this as a worthy serious endeavor. I would be very comfortable in my position as a representative for the people."

Val Kilmer? Who was the lead in "Batman Forever"? Moses in "The Prince of Egypt"? Druggy rocker Jim Morrison in "The Doors"? Ladykiller Val Kilmer? Governor of New Mexico?

"People in the state are being supportive. Our current governor, Bill Richardson, who's hoping to be picked as secretary of state, and whom I've seen down in the dirt helping people you know could never help him in return, and whom I love, had a dinner for me and said not to dismiss the idea. Said I could be a great governor.
...

"After I wrap this film, I'm off to LA to see my kids then home to New Mexico to talk to friends and see what they say. I know I'm not yet qualified for the job. It's not like I need fame. If that's what it's all about, I wouldn't live in New Mexico.

So, will his teenage girlfriends live in the Governor's mansion as well, or was that just a phase?

This is ridiculous. I have friends from Santa Fe, and the word on the street there is that this guy is out of his mind and living on another planet. Apparently he cavorts around town "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!"-ing people at gas stations, etc.

Politics (not art or pop culture) is where the spotlight is right now.. anyone surprised that needy actors are drifting to it?

Anyway, silly, absurd, unsettling.. I gotta go watch science/civic responsibility sermons from actors (I mean, "Ecoists") on the Sundance channel now. tata...

If you speak with anyone who has every worked with this guy, they all never want to work with him again. That says something about the man. Still, I loved him in "The Doors"!

I think Val Kilmer is perfectly qualifed. After all, he played the "The Saint" in the eponymous film, acting as a secret agent in Russia (!!!!), and not only did he save the girl (Eliz. Shue, sigh), he solved the world's energy crisis by doing so.

Frankly I believe this certainly qualifies him for governor. If not, you know, a run for VP.

Internet Movie Database, The Saint, Kilmer and Shue, 1997

Very few pols make a point of even mentioning Native Americans. That he did, even once, already suggests at least one qualification for the position. I'm just not sure very many of all the rest can be surmounted by yet another actor.

Mind you, complaints from the GOP about an actor getting into politics via governorship are a bit hypocritical: think actor turned California governor with very little prior political experience (apart from a speech) who eventually became President.

The change we witnessed was driven by the younger generation, so to keep that energy flowing as we solve our problems takes new blood! Obama sparked that in people, we all felt it and put him in office. We should want an entire new generation of public servants who have the best interests of our country in mind, rather than those who are seeking the riches of the world. Kilmer and others are already rich and famous, that means to me that he wants to get involved to help make change that he feels strongly about. There has never been anything really bad said about him, and he's in Obama's age group, so to say that he would be doing this to pander is surprising! I expect many more of those in positions of power in other industries and careers to want to help, not for the glory, they have already experienced that, but doing their civic duty as Americans should be supported during this time of chaos, economic uncertainty, and call to action and service by Obama! Career politicians are more jaded and lack in many cases the spirit of what our Constitution stands for as John McCain and the Republicans have shown us over the last 8 years. New blood ushers in new ideas we need for the future! Remember Kennedy's call for young people to get involved?

Since Mr. Freeze is Governor of California, it might be wise to elect Batman as Governor of New Mexico. Now If only we can get Chris O'Donnell to run for Governor of Colorado.
