I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Val Kilmer

Val Kilmer. By cellphone from Bulgaria, he said: "There's sort of a rumor around that I'm maybe thinking about running to be governor of New Mexico? Well, it's sort of true. It's been my home 25 years. I really love my state. Poor, hardworking, decent people - Native Americans, carpenters, artists, expats mixed in with hundreds of the world's smartest physicists at Los Alamos. I've always thought of myself as functioning as a candidate for them.

"The media interests me and it's influenced politicians since the '60s, and I'm approaching this as a worthy serious endeavor. I would be very comfortable in my position as a representative for the people."

Val Kilmer? Who was the lead in "Batman Forever"? Moses in "The Prince of Egypt"? Druggy rocker Jim Morrison in "The Doors"? Ladykiller Val Kilmer? Governor of New Mexico?

"People in the state are being supportive. Our current governor, Bill Richardson, who's hoping to be picked as secretary of state, and whom I've seen down in the dirt helping people you know could never help him in return, and whom I love, had a dinner for me and said not to dismiss the idea. Said I could be a great governor.
...

"After I wrap this film, I'm off to LA to see my kids then home to New Mexico to talk to friends and see what they say. I know I'm not yet qualified for the job. It's not like I need fame. If that's what it's all about, I wouldn't live in New Mexico.

Ok by me, as long as he doesn't bring his friend, Maverick.

I met Val years ago. His heart is in the right place, but maybe he should stick to strictly humanitarian work.

Val,
Please consider that you have also (repeatedly) denigrated those very people you now praise. I believe if you were to spend a little time and money on a feasibility study, you'd find that you won't garner many votes. As a New Mexican with knowledge of your, how shall we say, indiscretions . . . you won't be getting my vote, nor Bill Richardson's full-throated endorsement. Respectfully, please don't waste your time or ours.

Why is it impossible to think that someone can change or want to do something else to ensure that they change themselves, or rise above the circumstances of their weirdness? I guess I just hate the fact that Americans are for the most part very judgmental overall; do not like to allow people to grow into who they are supposed to be! For example, people who join the military are trained to be killers, that is the purpose overall, right? When they get out, especially if they have seen war up close and personal, they come back weird...that is the long and the short of it but they run for office and we elect these weird, mentally challenged folks like McCain. We all know that being in the industry means, "Sex, drugs and rock n roll." When people are young they can get caught up, but as they grow older and see models like our President elect, they can change overnight. Being encouraged, and seeing something remarkable can change someone overnight like this election has, and that can be a good thing for him and our country. Perhaps that is what is needed to get this country out of the rut it is in. People need to at least try to foster some tolerance and unity for our children or the entire events of this week will be diminished; we will end up stuck another 45 years on racial divisiveness allowing our Democracy to fail...rather than thrive!

Weirder than Elizabeth Hasselbeck?
I know what you mean though - celebrities as Governors?
We all know how badly that's working out in California.

I'm not a fan of movie stars turning politicians. People become so blinded by the star-studded status of these people. I believe the only reason why Arnold became governor is because of that. People should take politics more serious than that. They saw the Terminator and just knew he would be able to make everything better for the residents. WRONG! They should have left Gov. Davis in and kept Arnold on the movie set. My brother and sister-in-law live in California and I was told that the people want Arnold out, especially those who wanted him in.

You do make a point that some people are caught up on the glitz and glamour, however, adults know the difference between fantasy and reality, so in an effort to remember that any American can be elected to public office if they so chose to run, can be vetted and chosen as the candidate from all parties. That is democracy at its best and something that America has to mirror for the rest of the world. I can see the point of keeping Porn Stars out, but just because someone likes watching porn, if they are an adult and do not watch children, or get into abuse, many Americans do enjoy a porn movie in the privacy of their own homes. If it was illegal, I could see that also, but it isn't. On regular TV, our kids are exposed to inappropriate programming and unless you block itthey are exposed without your knowledge! If we take the steps necessary to properly vet someone meaning physical and psychological evaluations to ensure that we don't have someone with diminished capacity running...we should have done that with Bush, we will not be putting people in office of dubious character. Everyone running will have the same chance to pass a lie detector test, world history, geography, leadership, intelligence test, etc. In America, weird is a subjective description of being different!

Funny, and if not sexy, more diverse at the very least! Age is another factor that is considered one of the "isms, so, let's not discriminate based on ageism nor being "different," as the Republicans tried to paint Obama as so different that he and his family was not one of us Americans though a Democrat!
