Undoing The Damage

Washington Post :

Transition advisers to President-elect Barack Obama have compiled a list of about 200 Bush administration actions and executive orders that could be swiftly undone to reverse White House policies on climate change, stem cell research, reproductive rights and other issues, according to congressional Democrats, campaign aides and experts working with the transition team.

A team of four dozen advisers, working for months in virtual solitude, set out to identify regulatory and policy changes Obama could implement soon after his inauguration. The team is now consulting with liberal advocacy groups, Capitol Hill staffers and potential agency chiefs to prioritize those they regard as the most onerous or ideologically offensive, said a top transition official who was not permitted to speak on the record about the inner workings of the transition.

We need to start up a green economy...jobs of the future. Too many people are out of work, including people I know personally. Very scary.

1.2 Million job losses, and counting. Unemployment at a 30 year high. Getting a job are words. Mere words.

I hope Obama can nullify the odious No Child Left Behind fiasco. Ask most any public school teacher, and they will tell you in no uncertain terms that NCLB is a planned disaster. It must go so that we can get back to teaching our young people.

Also, I hope that Obama will commit himself to making education one of our top priorities. Teachers need to be paid far more than what they're getting -- among other things, higher wages will lead to a more attractive option for bright college students. That is NOT to say that there aren't wonderful teachers out there -- don't get me wrong. My child has had terrific teachers. But it is true that there are many college students (I have met them in my classes) who are only in it for the "summers off"-- one education student confessed to me that she "hated to read."

Also -- more teachers, fewer students in each classroom. More money invested in buildings and technology as well -- many of our schools are literally falling apart, but nobody wants to invest the money in them because "it's not for academics." Nonsense. Try sitting in a classroom with no AC in late August when the temp reaches 95 deg. Or avoiding the buckets on the floor with the roof starts to leak. Or teaching spec. education students, or reading disability students in a janitor's closet because there are no extra classrooms. Etc.

As a teacher in a high ELL, low socioeconomic, high crime section of Phoenix, you're absolutely correct, MontanaHome. Most teachers that I know, especially the ones in schools such as mine, feel like we're swimming upstream against a very strong current, with little support. NCLB punishes us for working with the most at-risk, needy students. We do it for the kiddos and sadly are constantly told we're "under-performing", "failing", "falling far below". Within the walls of our classrooms we're trying to mend all the ills of society--poverty, abuse, apathy, poor parenting skills, drug abuse, violence, language barriers, and so much more. Fortunately, I do have faith that President Obama realizes that these children are our children and that help is on the way!

Oh, so nicely put. -- swimming upstream against a very strong current. The public expects so much from the schools -- but how can teachers be expected to make miracles in a class of 30 students, many who come from such hi-risk situations? I've known some foster kids who have gone through 4-5 schools by the 3rd grade. Some one-on-one help goes such a long way - I see that every week when I volunteer in my kid's school.

But, like you, I also have faith in Obama and his team.

It is amazing how many actually believe the Democrats propaganda about bipartisanship. The Democrats and Obama will put politics first in most every decision. We have to hope they have the intelligence to identify the issues where the country should come first, the judgment to determine the course of action for the country's best interests and the audacity to stand up and make tough decisions. BTW it will turn out looking back, most of Bush's decisions on key issues were what he thought was best for the country with few political considerations. The guy has a 20 percent approval rating, how can anyone claim he made decisions for political popularity?

200,000 people in Berlin saw him easily beating the St Louis turn out estimated at 100,000.

A month ago a poll suggested that if the world voted in presidential elections Obama would win in every country polled.

The world's enthusiasm for Obama is not really quite so new!

After President Obama fixes the economy, achieves world peace,
stops global warming, and restores all of our stripped freedoms,
I really need him to stop all commercials with a doorbell ring in
them. My dog thinks it's real and jumps up and starts barking. It's
really annoying.

The Man hasn't even had a chance to see where he's going to sleep and
here we are, ripping him and telling him what to do.....

Ideally...and if the parents are undereducated, alcoholics, under the influence of drugs, absentee, abusive, unable to speak English, public schools under NCLB must pass 100% of their students through standardized testing by the year 2010.

If not...can anyone say privatization?

Worst piece of legislation, ever.

It's sad that Teddy and Hillary were attached to it in any way.

You think that was bad, Shrub's brother Jeb dropped the FCAT on Florida. Now teachers spend all their time teaching to the test instead of general knowledge.
