I Like ItI Don’t Like It

SILVERTON, Ore. — Plenty of politicians reinvent themselves, but few do it quite like Mayor-elect Stu Rasmussen.

Rasmussen has been a fixture in Silverton politics for more than 20 years, and had twice before been mayor of the small city 45 miles south of Portland. Those terms, however, were before his breast implants and before the once-discreet crossdresser started wearing dresses and 3-inch heels in public.

Silverton has made Rasmussen the country's first openly transgender mayor, according to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a group that works to help openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender people win elected office.

Rasmussen, 60, unseated incumbent mayor Ken Hector, with whom he had long clashed, by 1,988 votes to 1,512.

Because Rasmussen's appearance was no secret, the campaign was dominated by policy issues.

"I've blackmail-proofed myself," Rasmussen said.

The story of Rasmussen's election was first reported by JustOut, a bimonthly publication for Portland's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.

"Stu never sought this recognition out," said JustOut reporter Stephen Marc Beaudoin. "He's interested in doing a great job for the community that he loves. The gender identity thing is just a total backseat thing."

That comes across when Rasmussen speaks in his decidedly masculine voice.

"I am a dude," he said. "I am a heterosexual male who appears to be a female."

His longtime live-in girlfriend, Victoria Sage, told The Oregonian newspaper that she and Rasmussen have been an item for almost 35 years.

I don't think she is so much transgendered, i think a better term is drag queen - as she still identifies as a heterosexual male. You go girl! Right on Oregon!

Hold on, waitaminnit. The article title is incorrect and misleading. He's not "transgendered," he's a "transvestite."

BIG difference.

It is truly wonderful to behold those rare instances when homosexuals or transgenders still fall for the person of the opposite sex.

More power to him. Though to be honest, he doesn't really "appear to be female".

EXACTLY, steadystate! Any man, straight, gay or bi, living in the 21st Century ought to be able to wear his hair long, wear flowing garments and wear makeup if he so desires and not have it be an issue affecting people's perceptions of his sexual orientation, character or morals.

Why, just look at the 1960's, or France in the 1700's or even ancient Egypt! There were plenty of perfectly masculine and/or heterosexual men who dressed that way!

Is he by any means related to Scott Rasmussen, of Rasmussen Reports. Because they look just alike.

No news here as long as the candidate represents the people, behaves like a decent citizen and improves the city of Silverton.

I'm not against transgenderism per se; some people have real cases of gender dysphoria. But the person undergoing the transgender operation should look the part. If the "transwoman" looks like a truck driver, it could be very upsetting to those around them. If you can't pass for a woman, you can better relieve your dysphoria with antidepressants, which are not without problems but present fewer problems than radical penectomy, castration and life-long hormone treatments---plus it's a lot cheaper.

The only solution to Gender Dysphoria is transition.

What does it mean to 'look the part'? He's not trying to 'pass' as a natural woman and he's under no obligation to. Some transgender people are terrified to go out in public because they're afraid they won't pass. Would you deny them the right to live comfortably in their own skin just because you don't see the desired gender in their faces? Nevermind that there are further surgeries to alter noses, jaw lines, etc.

How offensive to ALL women! The definition of beauty changes over time and across cultures, we can't all 'look the part' to every set of eyes. There are many women with 'masculine' features who are just as striking as 'typical' beauties. This is the same attitude that leads to a myriad of other self-perception problems.

It can't be good for the individual if people gawk in disdain. You can say "I don't care what people think" but, after a while it gets to you or your loved ones. I say that "passing" is a must--anything else is antisocial and just insane. Just ask any transsexual who has spent thousands on facial feminisation surgery whether "passing" is important.

To the extent that someone has a problem, that someone always is the beholder. Seems to me that says a lot more about the beholder than the beholdee. Perhaps the beholders might profit spiritually from asking themselves why they have a problem. Such introspective inquiry might lead to some startling discoveries that might lead to a quantum leap in self knowledge and spiritual growth.

Why not give it a try? Only fear stands in the way. Why allow fear to have power over you?

I'm so proud. I am a 39 year old, married, black woman who is the mother of two--no baby daddies. I just say that to say, I could be the classic opposition to this statistically but I think outside the box and inside the brain. This is another tear-jerker for me. This is so awesome! I hope we can continue to move toward being the kind of nation that acknowledges people in all of our permutations and accepts us as we are. Go USA!

This clearly isn't as "liberal" a blog as it pretends to be. Judging from some of the comments.
