Generation O

NYTimes:

Only a Fugees-loving, pick-up-basketball-playing, biracial president-elect would send supporters an e-mail message on election night that said: "I'm about to head to Grant Park to talk to everyone gathered there, but I wanted to write to you first."

He signed it simply "Barack." After all, they were close. He and his biggest fans, the generation of young adults who voted for him in record numbers, together had slogged through 21 months of campaigning. And in his moment of victory, Barack Obama shared the glow of success.

What I see are several generations. My mother,76, myself,55, my 5 children, age 36 through 25. We are all part of generations that did teach our children well. And our children did learn.

In a world of hate and anger, we taught love, kindness, and compassion. To help your brother in need. To take care of the less fortunate and, most importantly, to respect every one.To be a good parent is an everyday job and, if you do it right, things will fall into place.

The result was the election of our new President.

There will always be those that cling to hatred and intolerance.Unable to look forward toward anything that is good or decent. They are a dying breed in every sense of the word.

For the first time in my lifetime I see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

This was a triumphant night for Black America. For sure.
It was also a reaffirmation of the ideals of the 60's. From We shall Overcome someday to whites joining in protest for people of colour to everyone in a circle holding hands and listening to John Lennon's "IMAGINE"
We imagine Peace, Justice, Equality. Our hearts have ached for it in ebbs and flows. HOPE came and the promise of CHANGE.
We are the ones but..... boys and girls of all decades.... THERE IS WORK TO BE DONE!
She's been waiting. She"s been waiting... for so long..
For her children... for her children to RETURN...

I'm happy that the torch is being passed to a younger generation, but I have to say, as someone turning 66 on Tuesday, it will gall me to be identified with the only age group McCain won since I have supported Obama from the beginning.

Quoting the title of a movie doesn't mean that you actually watched it. If you had, you would have realized that they were talking about you

Hmmn.....NYT you're a little behind the times of this one. I know you want to make a big (and factual) point about young people, generation O, as you call them.....but you picked an iffy example to illustrate your point. I got the same email from Obama.....and I am in my 60's.....some of my friends in their 50's got the email too. What you have to understand is that Obama is a multi-generational candidate....now that's an angle to explore.

Yeah... I noticed that was a bit off, too--I thought they were trying too hard to be 'hip' with their examples, and they ended up being way off. That email was sent out to everybody involved. (I'm in my 40s, my mom is in her 70s--we both received it.)
