McClatchy:

The famous -- or infamous, depending on your point of view -- "godless" TV commercial in North Carolina's campaign for the U.S. Senate almost didn't happen.

For starters, Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole's campaign didn't think Democratic challenger Kay Hagan would follow through with plans to attend a Boston fundraiser hosted by a couple known for promoting atheist causes. Certainly not after the Dole campaign had sent out a news release attacking Hagan for even scheduling such an event.

Even then, Dole's campaign thought it would run such an ad only as a last resort. And then it would be the mildest version of the ad.

Too late for the spin. It was what it was. And it worked....for Kay Hagan.

The Republican party will NOT survive if they do this.

Elizabeth Dole revealed herself as an individual having neither integrity nor any ethical standard. The ad was utterly despicable. What a fine Christian!

She did not deserve to be in the United States Senate.

She and McCain are kind of like Woody Hayes...all the good stuff they've done will forever be marred by their disgraceful acts. Unlike McCain and Dole, though, Hayes can at least say he did his act -- punching the opposing player -- without thinking it over.

McCain and Dole had time to think and yet still engaged in the slime.

Dole deserved to lose after that disgraceful ad and I'm glad that my vote against her contributed to her loss. Too bad Bachmann didn't also get the boot..

Vox populi vox dei.

Er! What did the populus of North Carolina say again? Would/could someone remind Madam Dole? Thanks!

Nothing matters except this:

Even atheists have the right to Congressional representation. They are protected under the Constitution to believe in God or to choose not to. They are still tax payors, citizens, and have the right to representation.

Believing a certain ideology, or a religion, does not guarantee your representation. The Constitution does.

Because she does not respect the Constitutional rights of atheists, Dole is unfit to serve.

I agree with this. Everyone, including atheists, have the right to participate in our democracy. Religios faith is not a pre-requisite to the political process.

"But Davis insists the commercial was not designed to question Hagan's faith. He said it was about her decision to attend the fundraiser."

Nice try, but I saw the ad.

Slander yes, but good slander. Aren't we grateful for the end results? Any thing that helped to rid the senate of another right extremist is a good thing. I'm elated, my great thanks to the people behind the ad.

These religious nutjobs think that you must believe in everything they do. If someone makes the decision to not believe in fairies then its their right not to. This whole notion that this country is founded on Christianity is bullsch!tt and these religious nutt!es need to keep their beliefs to themselves. If God Fairy) was truly on their side he would have answered them. People can believe in what they want just don't try to push the garbage on others. Keep it to oneself.

Elizabeth Dole ran the American Red Cross into the ground. A relative of mine worked there at the time. Low moral! She froze pay (pay was not great to start but there was reimbursement for education in a field that could help the Red Cross). And oh yeah, she cut those same education reimbusements for staff, tainted blood products due to poor management, large amounts of money went missing and she had to resign. The year of her resignation, I was shocked when she said she was going to run for President..Was there no shame? Then she ran for Senate in her home state and won. Name recognition!!! Then in the 2006 Senate races, she was in charge of selecting, supporting and electing Republican Senatorial candidates. They lost seats in a major way and the Dems got control. Now she is ranked as 93rd out of 100 in effectiveness in the Senate and rarely went "home' to her district. After all the state of Kansas and Washington,DC were her home bases for 40+ years. She should have resigned instead of running for re-election.

I guess the Superstitious Majority has made the unwelcome discovery that "godless" people vote. But it came a bit too late.
