McClatchy:

The famous -- or infamous, depending on your point of view -- "godless" TV commercial in North Carolina's campaign for the U.S. Senate almost didn't happen.

For starters, Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole's campaign didn't think Democratic challenger Kay Hagan would follow through with plans to attend a Boston fundraiser hosted by a couple known for promoting atheist causes. Certainly not after the Dole campaign had sent out a news release attacking Hagan for even scheduling such an event.

Even then, Dole's campaign thought it would run such an ad only as a last resort. And then it would be the mildest version of the ad.

"This is just plain stupid.

"Obama has continually been asked to defend something that ought to be at democracy’s heart: the importance of talking to as many people as possible in this complicated and wildly diverse society, of listening with the possibility of learning something new, and of speaking with the possibility of persuading or influencing others."

Does she get to take the bust she had commissioned for the Red Cross headquarters?

The house of sticks that Elizabeth built!

If god is great why didn't she/he/it help the Dole's campaign win? The stupidy of the credulous and religious belief.

God just had way too many requests this election cycle... being one of the original old testament guys he is still using dial up and things are taking longer than expected on fulfilling political wishes... There was a press release that he has finally gotten to the one about rain in Denver and wants to know if anyone still wants that one. The "dial a strike them down" crowd should probably reread some of the sections thru out the book as to how prayer works and what it is for.

The absence of God favoring the person who claimed to call upon God, doesn't mean that the election results were not God's action. One should be careful when praying that the best person will win. Especially if the candidate doing the praying isn't the best person!

She looks terrible. She needs to retire. Another example of power and greed seeking.

The major mistake the righties are making is the continued insistence of mixing politics and religion. They will continue being divisive while spewing their rhetoric of hate. They will also continue causing any sane and decent person to consign them them to the loony fringe.

This episode in American politics should stand as a lesson to all righties. You don't mess with a person's religion and the attempt to enforce one's religious viewpoint on a country as diverse as the US doesn't belong in polite society.

Looks like this Davis guy who did the ad and other nasty ones might need to be looking for a new line of work. That ad cost her the election. THe ad was not only about Hagan's judgment, as Davis says, because of that last line, the actress saying "I don't believe in God." That was not about judgment, it was about religion and this little wimp ought to own up to that.

As should Dole, who said I APPROVED THIS AD.

I live in North Caolina, and did not know Kay Hagens name until Dole spent months telling me her name in nasty political ads. I didn't see or hear a single ad of Dole naming her accomplishments in Congress- I guess because she didn't have any.

I got so sick and tired of the " concerned announcer " voice -on both sides but especially the republicans because they had more attack ads . These voice -over people make their money every election and I don't see why hourly employees at a call center in Indiana have the integrity it takes to walk off a job and lose pay because they are not going to trash Barack Obama ,but the people who do the voice work for the godless ad and the McCain attack ads can't say -'NO" -get someone else -it is a very sad commentary.
I think that ALL political media advertising should be spoken by the candidate -that way they are 100% responsible -not "I'm so and so and I approved this message " - but rather 'my name is and I am here to tell you that..." -Once the candidates actually have sling the mud with their own mouths then we will see an improvement, until then it is simply an integrity test for an out of work announcer.

So long to Dole, she felt such a sense of entitlement to be elected regardless of how little she had to bring to the position. This hateful ad sealed the deal, and the voters have spoken.

Oh I think she should think about getting her things in to boxes. She lucked out letting her ugly spew escape so late in the election cycle. It is out and will NEVER go away now. That is unless every copy of it on the internet disappears and MSNBC ceases to exist. The ad day one in 2010 will be that and it will be the ad everyday for the cycle. There will be a candidate that will come to the contest that will have the time to expose her in debate and at every turn. She is on the radar and everyone is watching now and will every day she is at work in DC.

By her behavior, Elizabeth Dole has shown to the world that she is the godless one, for she had no qualms about breaking one of his Ten Commandments repeatedly and without apology: "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." Hypocrite!

Good point. It seems like Republicans only think the 10 Commandments apply to other people.

Don't you just love these people who makes these ads and then try to justify it with some crapload only because they got identified as person who made the ad.

Evil hates the light, keep shining your light!
