Polish Lawmaker Slurs Obama: Left's 'Black Messiah ... End Of White Civilization'

WARSAW, Poland — Poland's Foreign Ministry has condemned a conservative lawmaker who called U.S. president-elect Barack Obama the "black messiah of the new left" and said his victory marks the "end of the civilization of the white man."

Artur Gorski is a little-known member of the opposition right-wing Law and Justice party. He made the remark to parliament on Wednesday, a day after Obama's historic victory as America's first African-American president.

The Foreign Ministry condemned the remark in a statement Sunday and said it will urge Parliament's Ethics Committee to review the case.

Ministry spokesman Piotr Paszkowski says he doesn't know what kind of punishment Gorski could face, but said the government wants to emphasize that it regards the remark as unacceptable.

I think everyone is missing the point. The point is WHAT HIS MINDSET IS RELATIVE TO AMERICA. He thinks that America is a land of ONLY WHITE CIVILIZATION. He doesn't SEE black, indians, mexicans, puerto ricans, asians or ANYONE ELSE NOT WHITE AS BEING AMERICAN. He doesn't understand that the makeup of America is NOT white civilization. It is AMERICAN CIVILIZATION. And American Civilization is a combination of influences from all Americans of all races.

Obama's election won't be the end of white civilization. It's a continuation of AMERICAN CIVILIZATION.

Although Gorski's comments are nothing short of repulsive, I'm unsettled at the vitriol extended towards Poland generally, in response to one hateful individual. In light of the events during the past eight years, is it justifiable to condemn of an entire nation and it's people for the abhorrent behavior of it's politician­s?...espec­ially since last Tuesday? Racism and hate exists in every country - the "us and them", "good and evil" is destructive, too simplistic and deceives us into thinking if we simply attack or collectively hate in return, that somehow we are responding properly. Unfortunately it's just more of the same. I understand the reaction to Gorski, but carrying that anger toward all Poles because someone has travelled through the country or generalizing - "I know these people" is ridiculous.

One of the things I've never understood:

How easily the oppressed become the oppressor. Coming from Irish ancestry, I am baffled by O'Reilly, Hannity, Buchanan, and many more who, forgetting the genocide in Ireland and the rampant anti-Irish prejudice in 19th century America, make themselves rich by demonizing minority groups. I am baffled by Kristol, Wolfawitz, Perl, and many more who, knowing how Germany took away legal protections from Jewish people, argue endlessly for indefinite detention, and taking/keeping away legal protection for minority groups. I am baffled by the attitudes of many in Poland, who, forgetting the centuries of conquest and subjugation, choose to be xenophobic once they have a measure of freedom.

Yes, there are many in these groups who do not support, and often oppose. these people. Still, I am dumbfounded by the widespread number and influence of these people who, rather than say "never again for anyone", say "now that I am in power.....­..........­"
