Right-Wing Media Already Feeding Its Post-Election Anger

An article in Sunday's Los Angeles Times takes a look at how the right-wing media is responding to Obama's victory last week. Already, it seems, the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity have started to rile up their listeners/viewers by going after Obama. The relationship of Fox News and the Obama administration will be particularly interesting to watch, given that Fox News was cut out of the questioning at the first Obama press conference. As for Obama's harshest critics among fellow politicians, the New York TImes reported yesterday on how many of them have, for various reasons, rushed to praise him.

From the LA Times:

Opening his first post-election rant against the president-elect, Limbaugh launched in with a certain relish. "The game," he told his radio listeners, "has begun."

Sean Hannity, on the other hand, insisted on feigning a post-election detente, telling his Fox News television audience last week, "I want Barack Obama to succeed."

Didn't he think anyone would notice that, just a moment later, he was back parroting the failed campaign argument that Obama is a "mystery"?

"I fear [this] is the guy that has these radical associations 20 years ago," Hannity added, an odd way of demonstrating support for the new commander in chief.

"A healthy skepticism is not only the media's right but its obligation," which, Mr. Rainey, is a fact that you have forgotten in the last two years. The performance by Mr. Rainey and his colleagues in the media has destroyed the credibility of journalism, and it's going to be a long time before they get it back. You abandoned your obligation a long time ago. You've even got members of your profession who are on television saying they don't know anything about Obama, except his two books. Media actually needs a good conservative voice, but Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, et al. are not it. Palin will also not be it, although there will be efforts to use her. What is called "conservatism" is not conservative in any way. It is authoritarian, totalitarian, plutocratic, aristocratic, but it is not conservativism. Limbaugh, Hannity, et al. are demagogues who are quite willing to undermine our nation to enrich themselves. The best way to deal with the ubiquitous radio presence of Limbaugh and Hannity and their ilk is to boycott them and their advertisers. Notify the radio stations and the advertisers that you are doing so and then really do it. They are the fat queens who have to be fed by the drones to survive. Stop feeding them and they will go to a desiccated state and we will not have to hear them bleating on all the airwaves all the time anymore. They have destroyed talk radio and the station management has allowed that to happen. Once great American radio stations like KMOX, WLS and so many others, are now just platforms for Limbaugh-H­annity-Lev­in and their clones to spew lies and distortions and demagogic propaganda endlessly. Take back your airwaves, folks!

I agree. There are no rational voices of conservatism. Limbaugh, Hannity and Levin paint extremely skewed, self serving caricatures of news items. They seem to be depserately trying to hang onto their niche but if that rational voice comes along, they're gone.

Limbaugh are simply spewing out their last breath of hate - their audience is shrinking and aging at the same time. They face the inevitable die-off, as young people have clearly spoken that they will not side with hate and fear.

It should be interesting to watch what happens to MSNBC and NPR after the fairness doctrine comes back. Those media outlets will change more than talk radio. And not in a way that folks here are going to like.

Actually, the liberals in congress will craft it so that it only applies to talk radio, because that media outlet is the one that is predominatly conservative. They really only care about targeting talk radio, because it is about the only media outlet where conservatives are noticeably more successful than liberals.

All the people I hear claim that NPR is biased are mostly people who do not actually listen to it. The reality is that NPR is more balanced and non-political in their coverage as any other news outlet.

Are you aware that the guy who Bush appointed as head of Public Broadcasting, and whose objective it was to end federal support for it, commissioned an extensive survey of listeners about NPR coverage? The results of that survey, paid for with tax dollars, discovered a couple of interesting things...
- Slightly more listeners of NPR are Republicans than Dems
- The listeners overwhelmingly rated NPR news as unbiased.

Bush's handpicked Public Broadcasting head tried to suppress the results of that survey but he could not legally do so.

Did you know that even Newt Gingrich, who when in Congress tried to stop federal funding, more recently said he was wrong to do so and characterized NPR as a "jewel" of US media?
