Many political observers (most recently my colleague David Carr) have written about the Obama youth machine -- and how, with the election over, the president-elect can and should continue to harness the passions that he has stirred up.

One place to start might be in the area of renewable energy -- something that college campuses have already embraced. A paragraph of Mr. Obama's energy plan (see p. 4) envisions a program to aid "disconnected and disadvantaged youth" work in efficiency and other environmental areas.

"I think the slogan should be 'Retrofit America'" said Van Jones, the founding president of Green For All, an Oakland-based organization that advocates for job-training and other government aid to help people from disadvantaged communities get involved in "green-collar" jobs.
