President-elect Barack Obama has informed party officials that he wants Joe Lieberman to continue caucusing with the Democrats in the 111th Congress, Senate aides tell the Huffington Post.

Obama's decision could tie the hands of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has been negotiating to remove Lieberman as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform committee while keeping him within the caucus. Lieberman has insisted that he will split from the Democrats if his homeland security position is stripped.

Aides to the president-elect did not return requests for comment. Senate officials were unclear whether Obama would be comfortable with Lieberman maintaining his current committee post.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that he would welcome Lieberman into the GOP, though he has little to offer in terms of committee assignments.

If Lieberman were to continue caucusing with the Democrats without being punished for his campaign conduct -- Democrats say he broke a promise not to campaign negatively against Obama -- the progressive community will undoubtedly be up in arms. For Obama, however, the move may be a shrewd gesture towards reconciliation, in the process taking a potentially taxing political fight off the table.

Fellow Connecticut Senate Chris Dodd, who has spoken out in favor of Lieberman remaining in the party, explained as much to reporters on Friday:

"What does Barack Obama want?... He's talked about reconciliation, healing, bringing people together. I don't think he'd necessarily want to spend the first month of this president-elect period, this transition period, talking about a Senate seat, particularly if someone is willing to come forward and is willing to be a member of your family in the caucus in that sense."

A Democrat close to Lieberman, meanwhile, said he thought that keeping Lieberman in the fold "would be a good move for Obama as a way to make real his promise of new politics, a less partisan Washington and more unity. He would do so at some risk. Obviously there is a liberal wing of the party that wants Joe punished... "

There is, perhaps, one measure by which Democratic leadership can still reconcile the competing realities of Lieberman's future in the caucus. One Democratic aide said that the party was considering letting the Connecticut Senator keep his post at homeland security but forcing him to relinquish one or both of his spots on two more high-profile committees: Armed Services and Environment & Public Works.

Lieberman is in line for leadership roles in both of those committees should the current chairs leave their posts. On Armed Services, the two senators ahead of him are Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd. On Environment and Public Works, current chair Barbara Boxer may face a tough reelection campaign in 2010 and second in line, Sen. Max Baucus, already heads another committee.

If Democratic leadership were to keep Lieberman on homeland security but impede any chance of ascending to these other posts, that may be enough to placate progressive activists demanding punishment while keeping the Connecticut Senator in the caucus.

UPDATE: Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo writes that Bill Clinton has also been "making calls on Sen. Lieberman's behalf," something that the Huffington Post later heard from another Hill source.

But Matt McKenna, a spokesman for the former president, vehemently denies the report.

"It's completely false," he says.

All of the support Obama got was not given for politics to run as usual!

So lie, cheat and steal will still be an acceptable trait in the new administration - where's the CHANGE?

The CHANGE is he loses his chairmanship. And Obama is not saying anything different than anybody else. It's not his place to decide Joe's fate. Saying he wants him to caucus with us is the standard position of the Senate.

Obama should stay out of this one --- entirely.

Let the Senate Democrats, and Harry Ried decide what should be done about Lieberman,
without interference from the soon- to- be- occupant of the White House.

There is a reason we have three independent branches of government.

Keep them "independent."

If there is pressure being applied by "special interests" --- that's what we voted him into office --- to ignore.

Obama has always been a friend of Lieberman.Check below

That was before he refuted the primary results, turned independent, and ran against our Democratic nominee Lamont, winning by getting Rove's Republicans support.
Besides as a fresh Senator, Obama was assigned to Lieberman for mentorship. He basically had no choice but to help him out campaigning.
That was then. This is now.
Obama's not necessarily so chummy with Joe, but it's standard diplomacy for him to say he should stay in our caucus, that's what everybody wants, but only if he loses his Homeland Chairmanship. Otherwise he can go to the Reps, see what they offer him. He's free to choose. Obama has no say whatsoever in this, and neither is he trying to.

Agreed, Obama has enough on his plate without needing to tend to Mr. Lieberman's fate.

Lieberman should have considered it during these past two years. Hopefully the Senate Democrats do the right thing, and show some party spine and self respect. Lieberman will retain his Senate seat regardless, let him make good on his threats, or consider joining the team on their terms. Stop caving to his blackmail. He's made his own bed, actively opposing the Democratic party, it's nominees and attempting to cost it additional Senate seats.

There is a reason Hillary Clinton and the DLC lost this primary. Lieberman is out of step with increasingly active citizens, the very people Democrats profess to represent.

And who says that he's in it? Reid has already given Joe his options, give up the chair, caucus with us. Joe threatens to go to the Repubs if he can't keep his chair, let him go. Obama's not trying to do anything here.
Stop misreading things, please.

I think commitees would run smoother if the "skunk" was not in the room ... just saying ... there's enough on everybodies plate just to show up and do a good job none the less worry about Lieberman might or might not do. There's no way Lieberman should chair a commitee ... you'd have to ask yourself "representing who" ... the democrats in his state wanted someone else ... the republicans wanted someone else ... who's policies does he represent besides Joe Liebermans.

If I were Hillary, I would be feeling totally betrayed. She is the "New Democrat." Joe Lieberman was a New Democrat. Bill Clinton made right-of-middle fashionable and called it that. Granted, Obama sat in as chair of the New Democratic caucus for a term but the center-post belonged to Hillary. Obama won the primaries -- in the Democratic Party mind you -- by first posing as progressive.

With Rahm Emanuel in at chief-of-staff the "we didn't want a fight" argument over Lieberman just isn't going to fly with us Progressives. Especially with Howard Dean getting knocked out by his long time nemeses Carville, the infamous Clinton agitator.

He promised to limit the influence of lobbies. He broke the promise.

He promised to vote against FISA with the telecom immunity tack-on. He broke the promise.

He promised change and voted with Wall Street on the Bail Out and is now pushing support for the Detroit gas guzzlers.

This guy is neocon all over. Meet your new boss; same as the old boss.

I do not understand why Democrats should reward Joe for his actions. He is no longer a Democrat. He campaigned for the Republicans thereby, intentionally or not, throwing his support to their platform. Aren't there plenty of loyal Democrats that deserve a committee chairmanship? Democrats that will work to further the Democratic and progressive agendas deserve this not Joe the Independent. Additionally, if the Democratic leadership is so worried about being fillibuster-proof why would they think Joe can be counted on in a pinch? If the Democratic leadership believes they can show themselves to be the bigger person by having a non-Democrat chairperson why don't they really go nuts and ask Susan Collins or Ted Stevens or Norm Coleman to chair this committee? Of course these options are ridiculous to consider as is continuing on with Joe with an "I". Enough.

I'm going to make a prediction. I voted for Barack and have the highest hopes for him. But, if he and the Senior Dems in the Senate forgive Lieberman and allow him to hold his chairmanship, it will be a mistake they will NEVER live down.

As Joe Biden says: Mark my Words.

I think the overwhelming view of Democrat supporterss is that Joe Lieberman should get the boot.

It will be interesting to see if popular opinion is listened to or ignored!

So if its fighting he wants to avoid, why'd he put Rahm Emanuel in the White House?

There is something much more nefarious going on here. This smells like the fix was in all along the the Big-I Lobby.

I don't want Lieberman "punished." I want him out of a team leadership position. He is notoriously self-serving and a message buster. He would have investigative powers over the Executive branch. With or without his chairmanship, Lieberman will not go gentle into that good night. This one needs to be OUT of the tent.

As for Obama keeping his promise of bipartisanship that swept him into office...I guess that's a point. There is no question in my mind that the 150,000 people who turned out in Grant Park were celebrating joyously and tearfully because they knew Joe Lieberman would have a chance to keep his chairmanship.

We only thought we elected a Democrat for president. Who would have thunk it was Sammy Davis Jr. in a Halloween mask? First Rahm Emanuel and now Joe Lieberman. Can you all say "New Democrat"?

Surprise! The Rat Pack is Back, Baby!

Lieberman behaved in the manner he did because he knew he could get away with it. And apparently he is.

If Joe "The Plumber" Lieberman sees it even fit that Sarah Palin is qualified to handle national security and more qualified than Barak Obama, then I don't see any reason of "The Plumber" Lieberman be kept as Chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Reform committee under Obama's Administration.

We have a new administration and President-in-wait, and its up to the new administrations and its Democratic Caucus to decide who to takes over which new appointments. After all Lieberman claims to be an Independent candidate saying he can vote and support whom he finds appropriate and to his liking!

Its high time, President-Elect Obama moves quickly to end this "Lieberman-Game-Playing" by stripping him of his "current" position to a more loyal trustworthy Democratic Senator. Failure to do so would signal a weakness in Obama's administration and we are not ready for get into such mishaps right now.

Honestly, this is a situation, where the new Democratic Caucus and its Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, should be able to handle without involving the new President-Elect in this Lieberman game-playing. Senate Reid, should get tough and end this issue for once or else he stands to be seem as weak!.
