CBS News spoke to President-elect Barack Obama's top advisers Anita Dunn, David Plouffe, David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs in Chicago -- just hours after his historic win.

On Obama's role in the campaign:

"Well, no one had a bigger role, you know. The great thing about our campaign was we didn't have a lotta discussion about what our message was or what he wanted to do," Plouffe said. "From the beginning, he knew exactly what he wanted to say. And it's one of the reasons we were successful. A lotta campaigns will spend hours every day wondering about how to change their message. And he was pretty clear about what he wanted to say, where he wanted to take the country, and either people would accept it or they wouldn't."

On his chances:

Asked if they seriously thought Obama had a shot, Plouffe told Kroft, "We thought he had a shot. I actually think we knew what big underdogs we were. And he got into this in a very unusual way. Most people plan this from years. They spend a lotta time in Iowa and New Hampshire planning for it. We got into this very unconventionally."

...

"My fundamental concern for him wasn't whether he had the capacity, 'cause I think he's the smartest guy that I've ever worked with or known," Axelrod said.

"But it was whether he had that pathological drive to be president. You know, so often, what defines presidential candidates is this need to be president, to define themselves. He didn't have that. And, you know, we told him, 'You're gonna have to find some other way to motivate yourself.' And he did, which was what he could do as president."

On race:

"No, honestly you had to take a leap of faith in the beginning that the people we get by race. And I think the number of meetings we had about race was zero," Plouffe told Kroft.

"Zero. We had to believe in the beginning that he would be a strong enough candidate that people of every background and race would be for him."

"The only time we got involved in a discussion of race was when people asked us about it. It was a fascination of the news media," Axelrod added.

On Jeremiah Wright:

Axelrod said the Jeremiah Wright affair was probably a pivotal moment in the whole campaign. "You know, pandemonium erupted in the political community. And there was this sense that we were in crisis."

The video taped rantings of Obama's former pastor brought the issue that the Obama campaign had long sought to avoid center stage, and took them all by surprise.

"And I think we'd all acknowledged that we should've been aware of some of these tapes were available. We didn't review all of the tapes of Jeremiah Wright as we should have," Axelrod said. "And as a result we were kind of caught flat-footed on some of these tapes. But you know we should have recognized that once that happened, that race is such a fascination of the political community that it would take off as it did. And it did."

"That was a terrible weekend," Dunn remembered. "The excerpts were endlessly looped on television."

"Yeah, and the only one who was calm was Obama," Axelrod added. The candidate called his aides and told them he wanted them to clear some time on his schedule.

"And he said, 'You know what? I'm gonna make a speech about race and talk about Jeremiah Wright and the perspective of the larger issue.' And he said, 'And either people will accept it or I won't be president of the United States. But at least I'll have said what I think needs to be said,'" Axelrod remembered.

Gibbs said there wasn't a discussion.

"If there had been a discussion, we've often joked, probably most of the people in the campaign would've advised against it," Dunn added.

The more and more I see about the Obama team, the more I feel as if we're all living in an Aaron Sorkin screenplay. I still can't believe it's possible to have such and outstanding selection as President. The 31 years I've been on this planet have been filled with such egotistical, selfish, and twisted folks leading this country. I really never thought I'd see the day when somebody would take their seat in the Oval Office that had the people's best interests at heart. It truly is an amazing time to be alive.

When there's a really good article like this, I so much enjoy reading all the comments first, before making one of my own. Often I get so drawn into doing that, that I end up just commenting on others' contributions. This one grabbed me because for years, whenever 'American President' is on TV, I can't resist the warm fantasy that is this hopeful script ~ that there would eventually be such a man of integrity in the White House was just a dream for so long. That day sure seems to be here, and I am still pinching myself and getting choked up... I wonder if Sorkin realizes how he awakened that dream for so many, and possibly had a hand in conjuring up that image in our collective subcouscious, leading to the co-creation of this present-day reality.

What I found amazing about this interview was that these people just had this enormous victory, literally hours earlier, and they were just as cool, calm, and collected as they could be. Obama's no-drama culture is just what we need in the White House right now.

Well, he's currently President-Elect Obama's body man, or personal aide. It's very possible he may continue in that capacity, and unless there's any reason not to, I don't see why he wouldn't.

Me too - it's a great testament to Obama that he's assembled such an amazing team... It would be great to see a split screen of what was going on in Obama's team and what was going on in the McCain camp at the same time during the campaign... Calm and Thoughtful vs. the Panicky Divas.. ;D

What an extraordinary group of individuals that helped to shape history. Obama was very fortunate to have them working for him. They in turn were very fortunate to have Obama as their candidate. One with his own vision and message instead of a manufactured and processed one. Finally, how fortunate the people of the United States are that Obama will be President in a couple of months. The view of America is already changing around the world. There is hope.

Amazing. All of this played out exactly as I had perceived it. Especially the idea that Barack was going to win this on his terms or NOT win it at all. That is the sense I had during the campaign and that is what they are saying here in the interview indeed was how it played internally.

Scene from Friday. I'm in DC at a national meeting of law school professors (and those aspiring to become same), walking through the lobby from one interview to another. These are some of the most ego-driven, educated and intelligent people on the planet. They normally think they know EVERYTHING, So that's the scene.

Obama's press conference is on in the bar. A crowd of 30+ people gather at the edges, like you normally see for NFL games in airports or major disasters. He's not saying anything major, but we hang on every word. You could hear a pin drop for the whole time he was talking. That pretty much sums up the power of the man - a crowd of people who live to hear themselves speak shut up once Obama starts talking.

Looking forward to actually getting some good things done in the country.

What an amazing group of intelligent, kind, trustworthy people. From one of the millions who gave money with each paycheck, made calls and sent emails, I want to thank you all for your hard work which led to the United States looking forward to a bright future with the Obama Administration. President-Elect Barack Obama (I love to say that!!) is a special person, a once in a lifetime leader. He has my full support and trust, and it is so great to say that after the last 8 years!
Thank you!

I'm so eternally grateful that they all decided to go on this journey. I think that Obama and his team will help turn this country around, just as Bill Clinton did after Papa Bush. It's time for some intelligence in the highest office in the land. No more dumbing down the Presidency or the USA.

This was an excellent interview. One of the things that stands out among Obama's inner circle is their humility, their lack of taking credit for themselves and their dedication to a higher cause; Axelrod especially. I look forward to his role in the coming administration.

Each morning for the past several years, I spoke by phone to my daughter who lives in another state. Always, I would say to her that I was going on line to see if the "idiot in the White House" had blown up something else or invaded another country while I was sleeping! I almost lived in fear of the morning news! It is hard to break that habit, with Bush doing everything he can in the last days of his administration to further damage the environment before he leaves....all to benefit big business!

But as of last Tuesday, I have hope!

At last, we have a reasonable, responsible, caring, compassionate, and intelligent man to lead us! I believe that after Jan. 20th, I will have to fear the morning news no longer!
