CBS News spoke to President-elect Barack Obama's top advisers Anita Dunn, David Plouffe, David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs in Chicago -- just hours after his historic win.

On Obama's role in the campaign:

"Well, no one had a bigger role, you know. The great thing about our campaign was we didn't have a lotta discussion about what our message was or what he wanted to do," Plouffe said. "From the beginning, he knew exactly what he wanted to say. And it's one of the reasons we were successful. A lotta campaigns will spend hours every day wondering about how to change their message. And he was pretty clear about what he wanted to say, where he wanted to take the country, and either people would accept it or they wouldn't."

On his chances:

Asked if they seriously thought Obama had a shot, Plouffe told Kroft, "We thought he had a shot. I actually think we knew what big underdogs we were. And he got into this in a very unusual way. Most people plan this from years. They spend a lotta time in Iowa and New Hampshire planning for it. We got into this very unconventionally."

...

"My fundamental concern for him wasn't whether he had the capacity, 'cause I think he's the smartest guy that I've ever worked with or known," Axelrod said.

"But it was whether he had that pathological drive to be president. You know, so often, what defines presidential candidates is this need to be president, to define themselves. He didn't have that. And, you know, we told him, 'You're gonna have to find some other way to motivate yourself.' And he did, which was what he could do as president."

On race:

"No, honestly you had to take a leap of faith in the beginning that the people we get by race. And I think the number of meetings we had about race was zero," Plouffe told Kroft.

"Zero. We had to believe in the beginning that he would be a strong enough candidate that people of every background and race would be for him."

Story continues below

"The only time we got involved in a discussion of race was when people asked us about it. It was a fascination of the news media," Axelrod added.

On Jeremiah Wright:

Axelrod said the Jeremiah Wright affair was probably a pivotal moment in the whole campaign. "You know, pandemonium erupted in the political community. And there was this sense that we were in crisis."

The video taped rantings of Obama's former pastor brought the issue that the Obama campaign had long sought to avoid center stage, and took them all by surprise.

"And I think we'd all acknowledged that we should've been aware of some of these tapes were available. We didn't review all of the tapes of Jeremiah Wright as we should have," Axelrod said. "And as a result we were kind of caught flat-footed on some of these tapes. But you know we should have recognized that once that happened, that race is such a fascination of the political community that it would take off as it did. And it did."

"That was a terrible weekend," Dunn remembered. "The excerpts were endlessly looped on television."

"Yeah, and the only one who was calm was Obama," Axelrod added. The candidate called his aides and told them he wanted them to clear some time on his schedule.

"And he said, 'You know what? I'm gonna make a speech about race and talk about Jeremiah Wright and the perspective of the larger issue.' And he said, 'And either people will accept it or I won't be president of the United States. But at least I'll have said what I think needs to be said,'" Axelrod remembered.

Gibbs said there wasn't a discussion.

"If there had been a discussion, we've often joked, probably most of the people in the campaign would've advised against it," Dunn added.

How absolutely refreshing to have SMART people in control again. I really believe we haven't seen this since JFK. That's a long time to wait.

I think they where/are smart, undeniably, but they where/are also careless in too many ways. It is what lost us universal health care the first go-around, it is what lost the Dems the Congress during Bill's watch and it is, ultimately, what lost Hillary the nomination this past year. They are smart people, but surround themselves with questionable associates.

Sorry, you did kinda bypass Bill. He was exceptionally intelligent and left office with the highest rating (68%) of a departing president since polls were started. Everyone wants to define his presidency by the Monica Mess, but that dalliance does not erase all the good things he did while in office, including leaving a $123 billion budget surplus. Sounds pretty good at this point, eh?

metivo: I agree with you. It is refreshing to have smart people running this country again.(and peope of character.) It is true that Bill Clilnton was smart and did leave office with a surplus (which Bush squandelredl as he did as Gov. of TX.) I guess I, like others, was sooo angry at Bill Clinton for being 'human' I forget the good things sometimes.
He was so like the little dog crossing the railroad tracks and a train came and cut off the end of his tail. When this happened, the dog whipped his head around and the back wheels of the train cut off his head. The moral of the story is, never lose your head over a little piece of tail.
All I can say at this point is,' let he who is without sin among you cast the first stone.'

Your ilk are the ones who need and want the "nanny". Ready to sign away your right to privacy....right to hadeas corpus....evrything under the mistaken illusion that that will keep you secure. Give up a free country for a "safe" one.

When no matter what your nanny does you're not safe. You could still be a victim. When faced with that truth, the question then becomes one of, "Will you give up what it means to be an American to feel safe?"

I know what I choose: I'd rather be a free and take the risks associated with that freedom than feel secure only because I've allowed my government to shackle me.

Nice try.

I will be interested to see when these people who already bash Obama's Presidency finally wake up and see just how wrong they've been. Until then, people like "firstfreeze" are just going to make me smile remembering how we are about to correct our course after 8 long years of abject stupidity and failure.

Be clear, be honest, speak truth to power, and the power here is enlightened people, people who know in their bones what has to be done, because the show just can't go on the way it has been. Know your duty and do your duty. Once the consensus was agreed, and he has kept repeating it endlessly, educating, enlightening, inspiring, the details will be worked out. Don't get dragged into detail. It is the larger picture: middle and lower classes, health, education, sustainable employment in a sustainable environment, multilateralism, peace in the middle east from the reality of co-existence, cooperation with democracies sharing the values of the Enlightenment, removal of military power to impose American economic interests, respect for multi-culturalism, cooperation in implementation of basic human rights especially economic, education, and health in undeveloped countries. The integration of the system of work with the sustainable and dignified way of living is the core of a sustainable and peaceful Earth. Nothing less will suffice now, no more looking after the weatlh of the elite as masters of trickle down economics, exploiting labour and scarce energy resources for their relentless greed.

Wow. What a great piece by 60 Minutes. What you see in this interview is the tremendous love and earned respect this team has for Obama and each other. It's a beautiful thing to watch, and made me wanna believe that everything will be alright again. It's great to know that Obama wanted to become president for the right reasons. The more I find out about Obama, the more I come to respect him.

Finally, we did something right. We the people have spoken for some serious Change. I would not be surprised to see Obama continue his leadership beyond the presidency. Can you believe that we have finally elected someone we're passionate about, someone we love and are so protective about?

And to think it could have been otherwise. Glad we woke up!

Hope (and I'm sure they will if they want it) Dunn and Plouffe have a spot as well. Not that I'm a fan of cronyism, and I'm sure they got paid handsomely, but they're obviously good at what they do and it would be a shame to just let them go if they are as close as the interview said.

Plouffe has already said no. He's a very low-key dude, apparently, despite running a national campaign, and wants nothing to do with being in a daily DC role. No word on Dunn.

The people in this interview are all capable individuals. It wouldn't be cronyism to use them in the administration. Cronyism is when you put your Horse Association friend in a position of leadership, like FEMA without any qualifications and poor New Orleans has to pay the price.

When Clinton came in, he was sort of a loose cannon, getting into trouble with gays in the military, Hillary's fiasco of a health plan, etc. Obama's so much better than the erratic Clinton that there's no comparison. He was brilliant, as usual, to choose Rahmbo to herd the potentially wacko Democratic Congressional liberals for him. The Republicans should be afraid, they should be very afraid. If Obama succeeds, a critical tenth or more of the Reagan Democrats will come home to Mother Democratic Party at last, and Rush and Fox News will be neutered for the duration, laughable crackpot voices crying in the political wilderness. Obama can show the Democrats how intelligent rule is done, he can groom a good successor, and the Dems can finally give us a generation of good government which actually works, instead of the haplessness of Carter, the fiasco of Hillary health plan, Monica Lewinsky, shady Clinton financial scandals, etc. Obama is the Republicans' worst nightmare precisely because he's too smart to make dumb "liberal" ideological errors. His only "error" in the whole campaign was his "bittergate" quote, which was clearly outed by a Hillary mole at his fundraiser. Never another such
"gaffe," right? Obama's simply outsmarted everybody, and there's no reason he can't even outsmart the crazies on the Democratic left, too, since they are the only real political danger left to confront.

Gay Marriage CRAAAAAAAAAAAAZY. Here's something to consider, you won't have to get "Gay Married"... AND when Gay People you know get married you won't have to attend (unless you want to because it's a member of your family or best friend or something.
There's been quite a few gay marriages in the US over the last few years... and they had nothing to do with the mess we're in... most of that was caused by people who oppose gay marriage...

To me he sort of symbolizes the epitome of what America can produce, kind of like the whole ball of wax in one person, who also just happens to be brave enough to take on the impossible on our behalf. I'm still puzzled why the other 56 million voters don't see it.

I had a neighbor tell me, "Michelle scares me to death," although he couldn't quite say why. All I see is a girl growing up in Chicago, goes to college, becomes a lawyer, marries, gives up her job to raise her kids, becomes a great mother and a supportive, loving wife.... What a grown man can possibly be scared of is beyond me.

After I finally calmed down from the thrill of attending the election night rally here in Chicago, I thought about the coming administration, and realized that for the first time ever (and I'm 45), I felt completely confident about the President-elect. Sure, he has to have an ego, but not one so large that he cannot listen to advice. He's surrounding himself with bright, capable advisors. And I don't have this worry that he's going to do something stupid; I liked Clinton, but did worry that his oversized id would take over--which sure enough, it did at times and he behaved stupidly. Obama's calm demeanor is calming me, maybe it'll do the same for lots of other Americans.

This statement is absolutely exquisite--that he's in it for the country and not for him. It's a blinding flash of the obvious that a president should be there not for the satisfaction of his ego, but to do right by his country, and to serve his country. Yeah, that should be a given, but tragically, it far too often has not been the case!

Well, we must be realistic. Mind you, Obama is one of my senators, and I started sending emails to his office 3 years ago telling him he should run for President. Lots of people here in Illinois felt the same, which says a lot.

HowEVER, that said, we must realize that no one who runs for President does it completely for the people. He has to have a big ego--and that's okay. As long as he can balance it, which I believe he will.
