CBS News spoke to President-elect Barack Obama's top advisers Anita Dunn, David Plouffe, David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs in Chicago -- just hours after his historic win.

On Obama's role in the campaign:

"Well, no one had a bigger role, you know. The great thing about our campaign was we didn't have a lotta discussion about what our message was or what he wanted to do," Plouffe said. "From the beginning, he knew exactly what he wanted to say. And it's one of the reasons we were successful. A lotta campaigns will spend hours every day wondering about how to change their message. And he was pretty clear about what he wanted to say, where he wanted to take the country, and either people would accept it or they wouldn't."

On his chances:

Asked if they seriously thought Obama had a shot, Plouffe told Kroft, "We thought he had a shot. I actually think we knew what big underdogs we were. And he got into this in a very unusual way. Most people plan this from years. They spend a lotta time in Iowa and New Hampshire planning for it. We got into this very unconventionally."

...

"My fundamental concern for him wasn't whether he had the capacity, 'cause I think he's the smartest guy that I've ever worked with or known," Axelrod said.

"But it was whether he had that pathological drive to be president. You know, so often, what defines presidential candidates is this need to be president, to define themselves. He didn't have that. And, you know, we told him, 'You're gonna have to find some other way to motivate yourself.' And he did, which was what he could do as president."

On race:

"No, honestly you had to take a leap of faith in the beginning that the people we get by race. And I think the number of meetings we had about race was zero," Plouffe told Kroft.

"Zero. We had to believe in the beginning that he would be a strong enough candidate that people of every background and race would be for him."

"The only time we got involved in a discussion of race was when people asked us about it. It was a fascination of the news media," Axelrod added.

On Jeremiah Wright:

Axelrod said the Jeremiah Wright affair was probably a pivotal moment in the whole campaign. "You know, pandemonium erupted in the political community. And there was this sense that we were in crisis."

The video taped rantings of Obama's former pastor brought the issue that the Obama campaign had long sought to avoid center stage, and took them all by surprise.

"And I think we'd all acknowledged that we should've been aware of some of these tapes were available. We didn't review all of the tapes of Jeremiah Wright as we should have," Axelrod said. "And as a result we were kind of caught flat-footed on some of these tapes. But you know we should have recognized that once that happened, that race is such a fascination of the political community that it would take off as it did. And it did."

"That was a terrible weekend," Dunn remembered. "The excerpts were endlessly looped on television."

"Yeah, and the only one who was calm was Obama," Axelrod added. The candidate called his aides and told them he wanted them to clear some time on his schedule.

"And he said, 'You know what? I'm gonna make a speech about race and talk about Jeremiah Wright and the perspective of the larger issue.' And he said, 'And either people will accept it or I won't be president of the United States. But at least I'll have said what I think needs to be said,'" Axelrod remembered.

Gibbs said there wasn't a discussion.

"If there had been a discussion, we've often joked, probably most of the people in the campaign would've advised against it," Dunn added.

We could still help give Obama the edge he needs: Don't forget about the Senate run-off election in GA - Dems could get to 60 majority if Frankin and Jim Martin win and Ted Stevens loses. Go to Jim Martin's website and donate or volunteer to get out the vote!

Isn't it amazing that a senator who was convicted is elected in Alaska. What is going on in that state?

Yes, please help Jim Martin beat Saxby Chambliss! I'm a life-long GA resident and I know what Chambliss did to our beloved Max Cleland. Please do anything you can to help us remove him from that senate seat!

Personally I don't see a problem with Rev Wright or Ayers.

Rev Wright is a decorated Navy Corpsman and has earned his right to Freedom Of Speech.

Rev Wright told the truth about Aides being spread by an American Company who found it medication was contaminated. Even after the U.S. Government told them to destory it they sold it overseas.

Ayers is a little different to many he is now a Patriot. We know how the whole Vietnam War was a lie. Started on a LIE and kept going on lies for the War Mongers Profit machine. The U.S. Government ever dropped the Trade Sactions against Russia so David Rockerfeller could open a weapons factory in Russia to sell arms to our enemy. Our so called enemy. We were protecting the USA ??? Try living with that as a Vietnam Veteran. Used and abused by your own government for the profit machine.

How many Vietnam Veterans do you think would have joined Ayers if the truth of Vietnam was know ? 1000'S

Ayers has changed and is a very respectable professor in a well known Chicago University (the name slips me at this time). What I don't understand is why this wasn't elaborated on, or how Obama was not in charge or put together the board they served on together. I suppose it was decided to move on and get defensive. Still, clarity to the American People was needed.

You can't be serious about Aides (sic) (I think you mean AIDS).

I don't fault Rev Wright for his anger about racial inequality, not at all. But I fault him greatly for espousing scientific nonsense about AIDS. That's just spreading ignorance.

I wonder if the republicans will listen and figure out how they can compete without the atta-ks. It will take a great deal of work for them to change and run a respectable campaign. Already, Sarah Palin, is excusing her behavior as 'the way campaigns are done.'

they lack the capacity to listen. It will take generations of evolution for them to reach that level. And since half them don't believe in Evolution -- Only in End Times -- they will get exactly what they prayed for.

seems to me the attacks on science and the Theory of Evolution

It just keeps getting better! The more we know about Obama -- and the people he ACTUALLY pals around with -- the more excited I get about the potential of his presidency. Unfortunately, the frightening thing about these and other revelations (e.g. those coming from the McCain campaign) is to consider there was a chance Obama wouldn't have won this election. Then we'd have been stuck with Sarah Palin, Joe the Plumber, and other GOP hacks. Oh the HORROR!!!

This should have been released a long time ago. Just more fairy tales to win an election. I don.t know about you, but I am tired of that type of politics and that is what attracted me to Obama.

One of the real signs of the intelligence of the Obama campaign, top to bottom, was their handling of the Palin issue. The conscious decision to not "go after her" and let her fail of her own accord was brilliant. They read correctly from the beginning that a certain species of Republican was projecting an image onto her, an image that she was too inexperienced and intellectually incompetent to live up to. She went from positive to negative in about a month, about as fast as Joe the Plumber.

I am personally looking forward to having a President who actually is knowledgable on the Constitution having taught it. He also has stronger morals and integrity than anyone we have seen in a long time. I think Jimmy Carter was the last president who had a moral structure we can recognize.

The simple fact that both Obama and Biden are constitutional lawyers, to me, is extremely encouraging and reassuring. :-)

What really came across in that interview was a feeling of principaled politics. These people weren't just willing to destroy other people in order to win (which is why they won). When Plouffe & Axelrod stated that Obama would respond to devastating attacks (such as Wright) he'd simply put together his response & state "if that's not good enough, I won't be President". It tells me we got the right people. Imagine...
A Country being run on correct principal. Peace.
