WASILLA, Alaska — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, amid speculation she'll run for president in four years, blamed Bush administration policies for the defeat last week of the GOP ticket and prayed she wouldn't miss "an open door" for her next political opportunity.

"I'm like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door," Palin said in an interview with Fox News on Monday. "And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door."

In a wide-ranging interview with Fox's Greta Van Susteren, Palin says she neither wanted nor asked for the $150,000-plus wardrobe the Republican Party bankrolled, and thought the issue was an odd one at the end of the campaign, considering "what is going on in the world today."

"I did not order the clothes. Did not ask for the clothes," Palin said. "I would have been happy to have worn my own clothes from Day One. But that is kind of an odd issue, an odd campaign issue as things were wrapping up there as to who ordered what and who demanded what."

"It's amazing that we did as well as we did," Palin, who was Sen. John McCain's running mate, said of the election in a separate interview with the Anchorage Daily News.

"I think the Republican ticket represented too much of the status quo, too much of what had gone on in these last eight years, that Americans were kind of shaking their heads like going, wait a minute, how did we run up a $10 trillion debt in a Republican administration? How have there been blunders with war strategy under a Republican administration? If we're talking change, we want to get far away from what it was that the present administration represented and that is to a great degree what the Republican Party at the time had been representing," Palin said in a story published Sunday.

Palin has scheduled a series of national interviews this week with Fox, NBC's "Today" show and CNN. She also plans to attend the Republican Governors Association conference in Florida this week.

Palin has been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2012. She also could seek re-election in 2010 or challenge Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Still uncertain is the fate of Sen. Ted Stevens, who is leading in his bid for another term but could be ousted by the Senate for his conviction on seven felony counts of failing to report more than $250,000 in gifts, mostly renovations on his home. If Stevens loses his seat, Palin could run for it in a special election.

Palin and McCain's campaign faced a storm of criticism over the tens of thousands of dollars spent at such high-end stores as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus to dress the nominee. Republican National Committee lawyers are still trying to determine exactly what clothing was bought for Palin, what was returned and what has become of the rest.

Her father, Chuck Heath, said Palin spent part of the weekend going through her clothing to determine what belongs to the Republican Party.

"She was just frantically ... trying to sort stuff out," Heath said. "That's the problem, you know, the kids lose underwear, and everything has to be accounted for. Nothing goes right back to normal,"

Palin's father said his daughter told him the only clothing or accessories she personally had purchased in the past four months was a pair of shoes.

RNC lawyers have been discussing with Palin whether what's left of the clothing and accessories purchased for her on the campaign trail will go to charity, back to stores or be paid for by Palin, a McCain-Palin campaign official said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the campaign hadn't authorized comment.

The McCain-Palin campaign said about a third of the clothing was returned immediately because it was the wrong size, or for other reasons. However, other purchases apparently were made after that, the campaign official said.

In Wasilla, her hometown backers welcomed her, putting aside their disappointment over her unsuccessful bid.

Jessica Steele can't wait to see what Sarah Palin does next _ not with her political career, but with her hair.

"That's something I want to talk to her about: What's our vision for her hair?" says Steele, proprietor of the Beehive Beauty Shop and keeper of the governor's up-do since 2002. "I can't wait to see her and say, 'OK, I've got you alone for three hours. Just relax, and how are you, really?'"

While Palin remains popular, the reality of defeat is evident.

Bags of fan mail, as many as 400 letters a day, partially fill a room at her parent's house. But parents no longer meet Secret Service agents when they pick up their children at Cottonwood Creek Elementary, where Palin's youngest daughter, Piper, is a student. The reporters and camera crews are gone from the Palin home on Lake Lucille, once patrolled by Coast Guard boats. Now a thick sheet of ice covers the lake.

Four state troopers still guard the governor 24 hours a day, Heath said _ something Palin never had before.

And in a bit of familiarity, Heath said he brought a pot of moose chili to Palin's house this past weekend.

And now the republicans have our Obama and our democrats moving to their right center , while stating they wish not to be to the left...
What would happen it the left ,,,, left the party.....They believe this will never happen and is why they are moving to the right...They don't believe the the left as a block will vote for another candidate or not vote at all...

Why did she still have them if they were not her and she was only using them...
This is a republican in all their glory , with all the corrupted values and actions...
You have better believe she has over 60 percent of the republican backing.

For the $180,000 Palin spent on clothes and jewelry for herself and her family she probably could have purchased a single family home in Alaska.

Since the clothes issue was such a big story, wouldn't she have had enough sense to leave the clothes with the RNC before returning to Alaska?

I must admit that I admire her ability to unpack all her new stuff and mix it with her old stuff so quickly.

There are her own clothes. The are clother belonging to the RNC for the acting for the show. When the show is over, the acting clothes should have been left at the studio, which for sure isn't in Alaska. How did the show clothes'd gotten for far off to Alaska ?.

Exactly! When I was a stage manager for a theater group, the costumes were left on the premises, the actors left in their own, personal clothing. The theater group wasn't expected to follow the actors home to retrieve the costumes. Good point!

I said the same thing here to my husband...they should have held the clothes and handed out on a need-to-have basis, and had them returned at the end of her campaign day.

But considering how poorly managed the McCain campaign was, this is really no surprise. The biggest no-brainer moments that my six year old could have found an answer for were apparently too much for the grown ups in this campaign.

Thank God he didn't win.

Must you keep publicizing Palin, or is it a way to find reader-ship? It simply a lack ethical conduct IMHO, in particular because Huffington and others so tolerated Americans very real frustrated, indeed, shocking outrage at times over her nomination.

In reading this, though, it's evident that Sarah Palin has no self-control whatsoever, much less self-respect, or she'd have "been outta there" in 2 seconds flat, as most other executive-level women would have done, had they succumbed to the initial bait. Yawn - this is tiring, "my friends."

Why doesn't she (or anyone) blame god for losing the election?
If she is such a believer, then she should believe that god didn't want her to win this time around.

Exactly. Well put!!!

Palin is probably looking at this from a different prospective....If God didn't want me to have the clothes that look so good on me, he wouldn't have allowed me to take them home to Alaska. I don't think she would want to believe that it was God's will that she didn't win the election. That loss had nothing to do with her, she was sandbagged by the economy, the Bush administration and by the rogue McCain supporters who spoke ill of her.

I'm wondering why the RNC is going through such great lengths to make this wardrobe fiasco such a huge issue. Wouldn't they have been better off keeping it a 'family' secret? They must really hate Sarah Palin for some reason.

Keeps us from wondering why little Kipper's birth certificate hasn't surfaced.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:28 AM on 11/11/2008

Yeah, you're right on that. We won't see any of these clothes, no medical records, no birth certificate, no real accounting for trooper-gate, home per diem-gate, travel-gate, etc. She's a rogue maverick alright. Has no ethics and no conscience. She looks good and has attracted a frightening group of has-beens living in a world four decades ago. HELP!

But... but.... she just said that the idea that she still had any of the clothes was nonsense. Sarah, are you being (gasp!) less than truthful with us?

It is very hard for the average American to imagine what $180,000 worth of clothing would look like. How much space would this take up? How many boxes or luggage would be needed to lug this amount of merchandise around?

Sarah knowingly and willingly escaped the lower 48 to Alaskawith this plane filled with with massive amount of clothing and jewelry. She never expected the RNC to follow her up there and even tried to throw out there the idea that she could donate the items to an Alaskan charity. We all know that the "Alaskan charity" is herself and her family. She is a piece of work that hopefully will not venture back down to the lower 48 in my lifetime.

HUH? She needs AIDES to sort through the stuff? She doesn't KNOW her own and her own kids' stuff ???

The kids needed UNDERWEAR too? Are you KIDDING ME???

How much stuff is there, that it takes HOURS to do this???

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:03 AM on 11/11/2008

She's using a "gotcha strategy" to frustrate the GOP lawyer seeking to account for the clothing. If these clothes were in the "belly" of the plane, why did she take them. Sounds like she went rogue for real...

Sickening, isn't it? This was a pathetic attempt to benefit from the hard-earned money of donors to the RNC. That their campaigns were in trouble and could have utilized the funds made available to place ads or man phone banks, this woman took as much as she wanted to go on a shopping spree of'" biblical proportions'.... you know.... brimstone falling down from the sky, forty days of darkness, dogs and cats living together...total hysteria! Like no shopping spree any of the rest of us has ever seen.

I hope the RNC does go to Alaska to retrieve these boxes and boxes and boxes of merchandise and if anything is missing from their list, I pray that they charge her personally to reimburse the campaign. or slap some handcuffs on her. Conservative my eye!

She is no better than the Senator from Alaska who is facing similar charges. Maybe they do things differently way up in Alaska.....down here we have some accountability put in place by laws she obviously has little knowledge of.

In Alaska, they do! It's not a matter of Alaskans doing things wrong (other than Palin and Stevens) it's the culture. Try living up there! YO!!!! The town have no laws, which makes Alaska such a relaxing, laid-back place to visit; after a while, though, with a few traders, and craftsmen ripping you off, you're ready to head back down to civilization, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. If I was Palin, I may call Masco up there to build me a mansion. It gets darned cold, and it's dark, too. Brrrrrr.

The surprising aspect about the hockey moms, Joe 6 Packs, and anti-intellectualism is that it's a slam at Americans by the RNC. Someone in the RNC hierarchy thought they'd play on Americans failings, or such as s/he perceived, and worse, figured wrongly, that no one would understand anyone from Alaska, much less be able to vett her ourselves! Now, that's a real problem for the Right; even worse than Rove could figure out. The only one I knew who could is now dead (he was Rove's teacher)!

It's a different culture, and besides would you want Putin dropping in now and then from just over there? If "that one" wants to run for national office, she needs to high-tail it out of Alaska, and lead a decent life in a major U.S. city, get an education, and take care of her family (with her husband) for about 15 years.
