NEW YORK — Despite election setbacks on many fronts, anti-abortion leaders sound more defiant than deflated as they brace for a future with fewer friends in high places.

With Democrats soon to be in full control in Washington, tactics for anti-abortion groups are likely to refocus on street protests, grass-roots activism and state legislation. One major three-day protest is scheduled to start in the nation's capital on Jan. 21, a day after Barack Obama's inauguration as president.

"The election forces the pro-life movement to go back to what we do best _ local grass-roots organizing," said the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition. "We will not go silently into the night."

At almost every level, last week's election was a stinging defeat for the anti-abortion movement, starting with Obama's presidential victory. Priests for Life said voters "made a grave mistake," while Mahoney's group, in a refrain shared by many conservatives, contended that Obama will be "the most radical pro-abortion president" in U.S. history.

In Congress, supporters of abortion rights now hold 17 more seats in the House and at least four more in the Senate, according to NARAL Pro-Choice America. And at the state level, voters in Colorado, South Dakota and California defeated ballot measures that would have banned or restricted abortions.

Obama's election also dashed hopes within the anti-abortion movement for possible Supreme Court vacancies over the next four years to be filled by judges who might support reversal of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision establishing a right to abortion.

The overall outcome "brings about feelings of great disappointment, of anger," said the Rev. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life. "But that disappointment and anger are forms of energy. ...I believe a lot of people on the sidelines for last eight years will now get engaged."

Pavone predicted that activists would stage more mass demonstrations and abortion-clinic vigils. He also said the election results shed light on the movement's weak points, and would prompt new efforts to register anti-abortion voters and mobilize clergy to be more outspoken in future campaigns.

Another outlet for activism is the ever-growing network of local pregnancy centers run by anti-abortion staffers who seek to persuade young women with unintended pregnancies to choose adoption or single motherhood over abortion.

"While legislative efforts to protect the unborn and women from abortion may be limited in future years, the work of pregnancy centers is advancing stronger than ever," said Melinda Delahoyde, president of Care Net. Her network supports 1,100 centers, and is concentrating expansion efforts in black and Hispanic inner-city areas.

Delahoyde said she hoped Obama would live up to his campaign rhetoric and reach out to groups with different views, including the anti-abortion movement.

"We have a lot to bring to the table," she said. "Don't exclude us because we don't line up with you on certain issues."

One of those issues is contraception. Under a Democratic-led government, abortion-rights supporters will call on conservatives to join in an effort to reduce abortions by reducing unintended pregnancies. Anti-abortion leaders say they are unwilling to do this if it means abandoning their abstinence-only approach and supporting greater access to birth control for unmarried women.

"We have a totally different view from other side in how we look at sexuality," said Pavone. "That's where there's no common ground."

Although anti-abortion leaders have abandoned any short-term hopes for favorable legislation out of Congress, they are prepared to lobby intensely if Democrats try to push through a long-pending abortion-rights bill called the Freedom of Choice Act. It would likely override scores of state laws that place limited restrictions on abortion _ including parental notification laws and mandatory waiting periods before an abortion.

"We will do everything to be sure it fails _ the damage it would do to the pro-life movement would be immeasurable," said Mahoney. "On the scale of 1 to 10, that's No. 11 of what our job is."

Another priority, Mahoney said, would be to insist that any health-care legislation emerging from the new Congress does not open the door to any federal funding of abortions.

Within the abortion-rights movement, the election results were viewed as a comprehensive victory, and a repudiation of their rivals.

"The hardline, divisive tactics they've used have been resoundingly rejected," said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "We'll probably see some splintering within the conservative community. ...I'd hope some of the folks on the right, if their goal is to reduce the need for abortions, would link arms with us."

But for now, anti-abortion leaders are eager to appear undaunted.

"Any time you have a loss like that, you have an opportunity to reassess and come back stronger," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life. "If they want to see this as a big loss that will set us back, that's OK. Our people are very energized, and ready for Round Two."

To Alesha Doan, a University of Kansas political scientist who studies the anti-abortion movement, the feisty response and the vows of street protests make sense.

"I'd be shocked if the pro-life movement stopped protesting _ that's been the area where they've had success in closing some abortion clinics," she said. "If you compromise, you lose the core of the movement."

There was talk of some wanting to deny those who voted for Obama communion.

Hey, if they want to get involved in politics, then they should no longer be tax exempt.

I work as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for children. I would like to see these jokers (anti-abortion groups) step up and become foster parents if they are so concerned. There are plenty of unwanted children that are already here that they don't give a crap about. I wonder if a man on meth and a woman on meth coming together to conceive a child due to the hyper sexual affects of the drug constitutes life beginning at the "moment of conception" to them. I can promise you it isn't much of a life for that child. "Save the child!" Then what!!????
BTW, many of these kids grow up to become the very people the Republicans bitch about. Vicious cycle indeed.

so just abort and now no life.........not much of a life beats no life every time

So I assume you are a vegan? Since you are so concerned about life.

In my experience, pro-lifers only care about human fetal life. It doesn't matter that a 4 week old fetus is less concious than a chicken.

I wouldn't want children anywhere near these creeps. Look into their history. Many are racist KKK members, others are virulently misogynistic, others are into bombing, arson, murder.

i don't believe the Weather Underground were members of the kkk.........although they were into bombing, arson and murder.

I want these so called "pro-life" movements to call themselves what they really are "anti-abortion". You are not pro-life when you advocate war and the death penalty but deny people the right to choice regarding abortion. You are anti-choice or anti-abortion - take your pick - but you are not pro-life.

Saw a bumper sticker that said, "HATE ABORTION? DON'T HAVE ONE". What could be simpler?
Who died and left these people in charge? Furthermore, who gave MEN the right to dictate conditions concerning women's bodies? Sounds alot like the TALIBAN to me.

Perfect response. Contrary to popular opinion, pro-choice is not equal to pro-abortion. It just means some people prefer not to have morals and personal choices mandated by law.

It really chapped my hide when McCain kept using the term "pro-abortion" in the last debate. (In addition to his "health of the mother" in air quotes nonsense.) I lost even more respect for him for trying to twist the issue into something else.

People who are pro choice are not going around forcing abortion on people, or saying, "Go have an abortion, it's the best!" So "pro-abortion" is not accurate at all. Pro-choice simply means the decision is up to the woman, not the government.

On the other hand, I believe that "anti-choice" is a way more accurate term than "pro-life." They want to deny a woman from making this decision and think instead, that *they* should get to decide, and most couldn't care less about a fetus after it's born. In fact, that's when they usually start complaining that their tax dollars go toward welfare and supporting other people. Most also support the death penalty or the Iraq War. "Pro-life" my arse.

I really hope, in my lifetime, I see the end of this STUPID debate. THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL ISSUE!!!!! I'm so sick and tired of people with ulterior motives USING weak-minded people with this nonsense wedge issue.

Here's the bottom line: if you don't agree with abortion, don't have one. If you think all unwanted babies should be born, then pledge to raise these children YOURSELF.

Exactly. They should kindly supply their address so all the unwanted babies can be left on their doorstep.

These are all the same people(republican right) who want less government involvment and less government programs. So I ask, if you want to force a woman to have a baby she doesn't want.... who's going to pay the bills? Who's going to pay for all the doctor's apts she has, the labor and delivery charges? And, if we are going so far as to say "we are protecting the baby" does that mean the pregnant mother will have to go to some "holding house" to ensure the health of the baby proir to being born? She might want to have sex, or drink, or do drugs, considering she's carrying an unwanted child in her belly. Will we then turn to lockdown for the poor woman? And who's going to take care of the baby after? The state? The churches? Well, there aren't enough state funds for proper care, adoption takes years in the U.S. and well, I guess there are foster homes... people who "take care" of kids for money, but that takes more taxes, and well, people who voted against abortion are also the ones who usually vote for less taxes and government programs... hmm... and I know that they would instead like to talk the mom into keeping it, yeah let's promote more single moms, destined to struggle with a single income, or even worse to the republicans.... WELFARE... but not let homosexual couples (who usually make a nice living) adopt those poor unwanted babies...

Great post, tired_of_the_ignorance! I agree with everything you so clearly stated! The lunacy of the anti-choice movement is out of this world. (I refuse to call them pro-life because for all intents and purposes, they are not pro-life as their willingness to support war, capital punishment, and unrealistic gun rights so clearly illustrates.)

If these groups care so much about reducing abortions, why won't they support candidates who'd make it easier to raise a family in this country, whether they're pro-choice or anti-choice?

["Any time you have a loss like that, you have an opportunity to reassess and come back stronger," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life.]

Or, you could reassess and conclude that maybe you shouldn't push your religion on people. The so-called definition of insanity applies here.

This social issue for some needs to be removed from the American political discourse. Abortions are here to stay and the vast majority of the American public wants them to remain an available option to women. Preachers, get off this issue, you will not win.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:10 AM on 11/12/2008

This social issue cannot be removed from political discourse as long as one party actually includes the goal of criminalizing abortion as part of it's platform. The Republican party platform itself demonstrates that they are incapable of objectivity on any issue regarding the separation of church and state. If the preachers can't win on this issue, then the Republicans can't either. I hope they never figure that out.

These idiots can protest all they want, as they have for many years before. Here are the fact folks...On this issue there is only ONE judge, Your maker and creator. These so called "children of god" need to step aside and quit judging any woman who need to make this horrible choice. These folks need to take care of their OWN families and not be on the streets causing more trouble and heartache.

I don't often agree with "believers" but hooray for a religious person who actually believes that people should mind their own business about what is ultimately a personal decision, that isn't an obligation for anyone who chooses not to have an abortion.

These protestors should redirect their efforts at places like China, where they do have forced abortions -- which is just as outrageous as prohibiting it. Or, if they want to work closer to home, maybe they can protest the gigantic military budget and aggressive foreign policy we've had, which tends to kill large numbers of people who've already been born.

Anyway, thanks, Marastan, for this bit of common sense.

That's right. Regardless of what one's personal beliefs are, I always found it especially arrogant of many of these people to think *they* know exactly what their god wants or thinks (and funny how it always matches what they do and think!) And always amazing to think it's their right to judge.

In the 1980"s, the Republican Party saw how slick televangelists, infamous crooks like Jimmy Swaggert, Jim Baker, etc., sucked hundreds of millions of dollars out of trusting people, often their life savings, and the glint in their eyes saw gold. They recognized a huge pool of already organized voters " church members, and that is when the Republican Party invented anti-abortion as a political issue. A brilliant political move, but that is all it is. They convince people of faith that unless they are anti-choice, they are not patriotic Americans and God will send them to Hell.

I was a Republican at one time, and left in disgust when they sold out to the extreme religious right. That may have seemed like a good move for the Republicans at the time, but things have changed, and they are now hampered by that alliance. They've become a party largely controlled by rigid adherence to religious ideology, and they've left themselves no flexibility to change with the times.
The demographics from this election do not look good for the future of the party, and simply finding new faces isn't going to fix the problem.

The Associated Press released this morning the following.
"In an impassioned discussion on Catholics in public life, several bishops said they would accept no compromise on abortion policy. Many condemned Catholics who had argued it was morally acceptable to back President-elect Obama because he pledged to reduce abortion rates.
And several prelates promised to call out Catholic policy makers on their failures to follow church teaching. Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton, Pa., singled out Vice President-elect Biden, a Catholic, Scranton native who supports abortion rights."
Catholic priests and bishops have a duty to set and hold values for their congregations as do any religious leaders. This duty however in this Nation is finite and ends with those that using the freedom of religion choose to enter the congregation. As citizens of this Nation they also have a neglected duty to support and defend the constitution of the United States that assures all of us the freedom to choose our religion, thus values.
The opponents of "right to choose" (values) should be warned that opposing the right of each of us to decide for our self what is life, or what values to hold, is anti American and they would be better served to step back and not attempt to infringe on the rights of others here, in this country.

These Catholic bishops came in handy for the church when they needed them to act as buffers to cover up for pedophile priests, which they would still being doing if they hadn't gotten caught. They sure wanted that to stay within the congregation...

And why in the world would the Catholic Bishops and priests have any say in this. The Catholic Church and its Bishops and priests cannot even conduct themselves in a moral way so why in the world should they be able to tell others how to "behave" morally. I'd think cleaning up from the inside would serve them in a better way.

Call them out. Harrass them. Maybe they'll leave. If they don't, excommunicate them.

In fact, start harrassing all your attendees for whatever slight you imagine they've inflicted on the church.
