NEW YORK — Despite election setbacks on many fronts, anti-abortion leaders sound more defiant than deflated as they brace for a future with fewer friends in high places.

With Democrats soon to be in full control in Washington, tactics for anti-abortion groups are likely to refocus on street protests, grass-roots activism and state legislation. One major three-day protest is scheduled to start in the nation's capital on Jan. 21, a day after Barack Obama's inauguration as president.

"The election forces the pro-life movement to go back to what we do best _ local grass-roots organizing," said the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition. "We will not go silently into the night."

At almost every level, last week's election was a stinging defeat for the anti-abortion movement, starting with Obama's presidential victory. Priests for Life said voters "made a grave mistake," while Mahoney's group, in a refrain shared by many conservatives, contended that Obama will be "the most radical pro-abortion president" in U.S. history.

In Congress, supporters of abortion rights now hold 17 more seats in the House and at least four more in the Senate, according to NARAL Pro-Choice America. And at the state level, voters in Colorado, South Dakota and California defeated ballot measures that would have banned or restricted abortions.

Obama's election also dashed hopes within the anti-abortion movement for possible Supreme Court vacancies over the next four years to be filled by judges who might support reversal of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision establishing a right to abortion.

The overall outcome "brings about feelings of great disappointment, of anger," said the Rev. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life. "But that disappointment and anger are forms of energy. ...I believe a lot of people on the sidelines for last eight years will now get engaged."

Pavone predicted that activists would stage more mass demonstrations and abortion-clinic vigils. He also said the election results shed light on the movement's weak points, and would prompt new efforts to register anti-abortion voters and mobilize clergy to be more outspoken in future campaigns.

Another outlet for activism is the ever-growing network of local pregnancy centers run by anti-abortion staffers who seek to persuade young women with unintended pregnancies to choose adoption or single motherhood over abortion.

"While legislative efforts to protect the unborn and women from abortion may be limited in future years, the work of pregnancy centers is advancing stronger than ever," said Melinda Delahoyde, president of Care Net. Her network supports 1,100 centers, and is concentrating expansion efforts in black and Hispanic inner-city areas.

Delahoyde said she hoped Obama would live up to his campaign rhetoric and reach out to groups with different views, including the anti-abortion movement.

"We have a lot to bring to the table," she said. "Don't exclude us because we don't line up with you on certain issues."

One of those issues is contraception. Under a Democratic-led government, abortion-rights supporters will call on conservatives to join in an effort to reduce abortions by reducing unintended pregnancies. Anti-abortion leaders say they are unwilling to do this if it means abandoning their abstinence-only approach and supporting greater access to birth control for unmarried women.

"We have a totally different view from other side in how we look at sexuality," said Pavone. "That's where there's no common ground."

Although anti-abortion leaders have abandoned any short-term hopes for favorable legislation out of Congress, they are prepared to lobby intensely if Democrats try to push through a long-pending abortion-rights bill called the Freedom of Choice Act. It would likely override scores of state laws that place limited restrictions on abortion _ including parental notification laws and mandatory waiting periods before an abortion.

"We will do everything to be sure it fails _ the damage it would do to the pro-life movement would be immeasurable," said Mahoney. "On the scale of 1 to 10, that's No. 11 of what our job is."

Another priority, Mahoney said, would be to insist that any health-care legislation emerging from the new Congress does not open the door to any federal funding of abortions.

Within the abortion-rights movement, the election results were viewed as a comprehensive victory, and a repudiation of their rivals.

"The hardline, divisive tactics they've used have been resoundingly rejected," said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "We'll probably see some splintering within the conservative community. ...I'd hope some of the folks on the right, if their goal is to reduce the need for abortions, would link arms with us."

But for now, anti-abortion leaders are eager to appear undaunted.

"Any time you have a loss like that, you have an opportunity to reassess and come back stronger," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life. "If they want to see this as a big loss that will set us back, that's OK. Our people are very energized, and ready for Round Two."

To Alesha Doan, a University of Kansas political scientist who studies the anti-abortion movement, the feisty response and the vows of street protests make sense.

"I'd be shocked if the pro-life movement stopped protesting _ that's been the area where they've had success in closing some abortion clinics," she said. "If you compromise, you lose the core of the movement."

Hold on a second. When the majority wants to ban gay marriage, the will of the people is sacrosanct, but when the majority of the of the people support abortion rights, the will of the people is meaningless.

Are these people blind, hypocrites, or just stupid?

Don't answer. I know. All of the above

They 're ready for round two. More like they're begging for a rematch so it doesn't appear that their position has lost all legitimacy. Fact is as it stands now states have a great deal of leeway to determine abortion issues as long as they don't interfere with the basic tenents of Roe v. Wade. Those are simple:

1. First trimester is solely the mother's business and the states cannot interfere.
2. Second trimester states may interfere with the decision of the mother if the health of the mother becomes an issue.
3. Third trimester the state may prevent abortions based on preserving the health of the unborn child.

Don't let the anti-abortion people pull the wool over your eyes. Read the court decision for yourself. The decision was based on the inherent constitutional right to privacy. Overturning it isn't a simple reversal by a few Supreme Court Justices, despite what the media would lead you to believe.

Here's the facts: to overturn Roe v Wade, the Court would have to decide that either a) there is no inherent right to privacy OR they would have to decide that a woman's body is not a matter that is covered under the right to privacy. Either of these postions would have so many further ramifications that it would take a very radical court indeed to go that way. THINK about it.

As a Christian, I am in favor of the right to choose. It seems as though the Catholic Church is largely responsible for the anti-abortion movement in this country. But, that is a one issue platform. The Catholic Church has done little to atone for or prevent Priests from fondling little boys and ruining them for the rest of their lives here on earth! Instead, they hide behind their prayer cloths.....

Not to defend the Catholic Church, but many diocese are bankrupt from the molestation lawsuits. I would also put the blame on the fundamentalist movement, especially since this became a big cause / money maker for them in the seventies. Plenty of blame to go around.

How is this a money maker for them?
Just by sheer donations?
You got me curious, so please don't take my question as cynical.

If those dioceses are bankrupt monetarily, it's because they are also bankrupt morally. THEY KNEW for decades that priests molested kids. When I was in 6th grade in 1960, the parish priest insisted that we girls come over "one at a time," to the rectory to help him with "cleaning."

We learned damned fast to never go alone, and when he said "Oh I just love to hug you girls," we'd run the other way. It only took one time having a hand stuffed between your 12-year old thighs and his gross tongue in your ear before you knew just how much he loved us.

God only knows what he did to the little boys.

Here in Canada, the Nuns were exposed with regards to their sexual abuse of Native American girls as well as priests. Itsuch a disgraceful and heinous crime. As a baptised Catholic, I am pro choice too and think these sanctimonour hyprocrites need to get a life. I bet some of them have had abortions and are now trying to assauge their guilty conscience.

The Catholic Church is full of good Christians, including priests, and is concerned about various life issues including care of the vulnerable, issues of war, issues of family(to include rights of unborn fetus). The Catholic Church, in spite of the flaws of some individual numbers does not vote on issues of right and wrong, but teaches what the Lord Jesus Christ left his apostles to teach. As a Christian, I don't make such ridiculous accusations against a group of people/.

Thank Heaven for NARAL and Planned Parenthood for their tireless effort to constantly educate our public on women's personal rights over their own bodies.

These are the same people who bomb clinics, support the death penalty and war. In addition, the conservatives who preach for small government keeps trying to pry in the homes of its citizens with illegal wiretapping, ban of gay marriage, abortion, etc. There is no bigger government in that respect. This is supposed to be the land of the free, let people be free to choose and stop trying to convert people. It is ironic, not to mention hypocritical, that more people have died in the name of religion than all abortions combined. When are the crazies going to realize that the Right is stringing them along and that they have not prevented a single abortion (abortion rates have risen under this admin) and they use this as a wedge issue that they never will change, they will just milk it for votes.

If they worked really hard to make reliable birth control available to everyone, the abortion rate would drop through the floor. But, nah. That requires intelligence and an understanding of human nature.

For the corrupt, greedy Right, they should realize that their buddies in big Pharma would love that, and for the religious crazies on the Right should realize that they are being strung along and this is a wedge issue the Right uses for votes. The Right (the ones in power) hasn't prevented a single abortion, they have actually risen in this admin. Also, how can they talk about pro-life based on religion when more people have died in the name of religion than anything-ever. These are the same people who support the war, death penalty and clinic bombings.

Teen pregnancies went up during this administration under abstinence only education rules. But that's not the only thing that went up. Sexually transmitted diseases went through the roof too. These people have things to answer for. For the "good" girls who tried to stick with their abstinence only and ended up with human papilloma virus because they didn't have protection with them when they lost the battle with biology---these girls are now at much high risk for cervical cancer. The effects of Bush's policies will be playing out in the female population of America for decades and it will be the cause of much suffering.
Bush may have genuinely believed in what he was doing, but he has brought significant pain and suffering to the American people on so many fronts. There is a way that seems right to a man but the way there of . . . .

And it would take away their main way to keep the party "base" involved - if you take away the abortion issue, what do they use to "rally" that base?

A friend of mine just underwent a procedure to abort her baby. No she was not some immature teenager, she is a responsible doctor. It turned out the fetus had severe hydrocephalus. What kind of a life would someone have if they were brought into this world with severe deformaties or mutations? Doctors said this one probably would not live anyway. My friend decided to abort before 5 months. In instances like this, I feel it's necessary to cast your religion aside and show a little humanity. What "pro-lifers" do not get is that not all situations are equal...not everything is black and white, and cut and dry. There are instances when abortion is a viable option. Being a man, I completely support a woman's right to choose.

The Anti-Abortion folks are the pro back alley coat hanger abortions folks. The want Rapist to have children by rape.

They are generally against access to contraception.

They are incapable of understanding the choice between multiple bad options.

I am not FOR ABORTION.

I am FOR THE RIGHT TO ABORTION.

I am also very much for access to contraceptives.

The Christians in the pro-life movement need to contemplate Psalm 139:16 when they say that they are just trying to "save unborn babies." For believers, there is only one who controls the timing of life and death. Others' attempts to do so are futile and distract attention from God's true purpose for their lives.

Gotta use that against this wingnut of a Christian I talk to, when in fact, he's quite the opposite - very mean, vile, full of anger and hatred. Odd fellow for sure, yet he claims to be Christian. Weird.

So, what this means is just that these rabid pro-lifers really do NOT care about meaningful steps to reduce abortions. They just want to make the rest of us cowtow to their views on birth control and sex outside of marriage. These zealots (and yes, they are) have no place in any meaningful policy discussion when it comes to reducing abortion. They have so much GOD in their brains there is no room for common sense. They refuse to understand that the ONLY way to reduce abortions is to improve access to sex education and contraception, and to stop wasting time & money with abstinence education which we already know DOES NOT WORK. I hope that Obama treats these people with the derision they deserve.

True. We know absinence-only education does not work. Case study: Bristol Palin. Thats what happens when you keep teenagers ill-informed about their bodies. Result: two high-school dropouts trying to raise a child. And Gov. Palin is concerned about planning a decked-out wedding for these two? Tells you where this woman's priorities are.

A roomful of academics erupted in angry boos Tuesday morning after political analyst Michael Barone said journalists trashed Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republicans' vice presidential nominee, because "she did not abort her Down syndrome baby."

Barone said in an e-mail that he "was attempting to be humorous and ... went over the line."

Too bad someone didn't abort these idiots. I know of no law that requires you to get an abortion. It's a classic case of people trying to tell others how to live their lives.

Obama has already said that he is for the Freedom of Choice Act. I for one will celebrate when it gets passed. I'm an annual supporter of Planned Parenthood and will continue to do whatever I can do to guarantee that women continue to have reproductive rights.

In fact, after reading this article and knowing that they will be protesting clinics more to try and get them closed down I will be looking into how to become a volunteer escort to help women get inside the clinic without being harassed.

If these people really want to reduce the number of abortions than they are going to have to give up on this abstinence only nonsense and have birth control accessible to any woman who wants it.
